today we talk about

The Pool V6 final in Cubase 12

hello everybody andrew blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we begin our sixth and final video as we continue to examine the pool in cubase 12. but before we start i want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future i'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or cubase plugins or the cable guys shaperbox2 and many many other projects that are in the works then i know you're going to find just like i have that this is an invaluable study aid and the other thing i want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple pdf this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free okay so let's get started so we're at this sixth video now on this discussion of the pool and there's been all those other videos which are all in the navigation guide in the link below but we want to lead off this discussion with talking about external files once again there's probably not a more frustrating experience than making a project you know in cubase putting it away for three months and then all of a sudden being called on to bring that project out for whatever reason opening it up and finding there's missing files it's got to be probably one of the worst frustrating experiences one of the things we want to examine since we have an instrument like the pool here to help us understand things when we open it up and again to open it up hit ctrl p but as i look at the bottom information down here i can see the audio files and the total size and the stuff we've been examining pretty thoroughly in all the other videos but one thing we haven't looked at too much at the very end here it says external files 26. what that's telling me is there's 26 files that are not even in the project that somehow my project is looking at referring to using in some form or another that aren't even saved in the project necessarily so if i back this project up or i save it you know or do any number of things to it potentially there's 26 files that someday i'm going to open up and find aren't even in this project anymore so one of the things we want to do is for sure pay attention to external files and see what we can do to get those all backed up with our project when we're looking at the pool if we right click here anywhere and any file doesn't matter as we move down our list that we've been examining we have an option in the middle here that says prepare archive i'm going to click on that and a dialog comes up and it says external files are going to be copied into the working directory do i want to proceed or cancel well i want to proceed i want to bring those files in so let's see what happens when i do that when i look at the bottom it says my audio files and the use and everything but it says external files zero that means no longer is cubase looking for anything outside of its own directory this is a wonderful thing and a great accomplishment when in the future you have something that you're backing up or you're putting away for some other time down the road you're just saving it for whatever give yourself a minute to open the pool and look and see if you have any external files to be concerned about and now you have a way to deal with that okay now this brings us on to what we call minimizing the files when you have let's open the pool back up again if i go into my pool and i select all my audio files control all and i right click on it there's an option down here that says minimize the file right now mine is grayed out i can't minimize them what that means is pretty much everything is being used as it is but as we go along with a project many times we are constantly cutting up files and shrinking files as i'm going to do here eventually when we finish a project files may be all over the place and completely different from where we started and those files for example like this one here if i click on it it still is hiding a big long audio file even though i'm only using this little piece of it well that big long audio file takes up space as opposed to this little bitty piece of it that doesn't take up much space if i go back into my pool and i click on a file and i hit ctrl alt select them all now when i right click on this it has lit up this option that says minimize the file and if i choose this it now tells me that it's going to clear all the editing history and it's going to minimize the files now before i do this i'm going to click out of this for a minute we want to mention that all of these kind of things are typically stuff you would do after you've absolutely completed a project meaning you probably wouldn't do any of them while you're still actively working on the project and if you think you're only putting the project away for a little while but you're going to return and do other things you're probably not going to want to do any of these final really official lockdowns because there's no going back from them for example if i open this project a month from now and i want to come back and expand this for some reason it's still here whereas if i start minimizing which we're going to do here in a second this will never change this is going to be this way forever on the other hand if you know you've done everything you're going to do in your project and you're just storing it you know and it's taking up hard disk space you may absolutely want to just minimize all these things because it takes a huge amount of space different than when you know you leave everything intact in these big long files so you know make your decisions wisely and choose as you need but be aware what your options are so let's go ahead and do this i'm gonna go back into the pool i'm gonna select a track just to get it going i'm gonna hit ctrl alt to select them all i'm gonna right click on this and i'm gonna go down and say yeah minimize the files and it says again you're going to clear your entire edit history do you want to continue yeah i do and it starts rendering them off when it's finished it tells me to save the project now basically what it's saying is everything else you had up till now is non-functional anyway so save your project as it is because if you try to go back and check your old edits they're not going to be there so you go ahead and save it and now i'm going to close the pool down so now if i go back to any of these files that were at one time bigger they're not bigger anymore i can't stretch them out i can still shrink them but i can't stretch them they're forever these tiny little files of whatever these final edits are so again saves a lot of disk space at the other side of it it makes these edits permanent you have this option that if you again right click and you look at your options towards the top you have one that says export the pool if i click on that it opens up a file location tells me you know give me a name and i can export it these are limited they do export whatever you have here in this pool so again you could then import that into another project but it's only valuable in terms of every file has to stay in its original location wherever it was because it doesn't it doesn't necessarily import the new files into their new locations so you have to keep in mind that that's only good if all the files stay in their original file locations there's also this option that looks exactly like the pool but it's called a library for example if you want to access something like that you go up to the file of your project and below new project it says new library if i open that up it prompts me to select a location create a folder open it up and now you get a window that looks identical to the pool but it's called the library and in the library you can bring in basically you know sound effects or various audio sounds things that you may not necessarily want in the pool but you just want a location where you can store a bunch of stuff you can put them in these libraries and then once they're in the library you can drag and drop them into your project however you want earlier in other videos we talked about when you bring in things and they go into mismatched sample rates you can also reconvert files to some other sample rate or whatever you want when you right click on a file or in any number of files you'll have an option down here that says convert files when i click on that a little dialog opens up and i can do whatever i want i can change the sample rate on it and change the bit depth change the channel setup change the file format and then at the end of it i can make either new files or replace my existing ones or i can make new and replace and then the last option here i have no video files in this pool but if i did you actually can right click on a video file and there's an option that says extract the audio from the video file at that point it'll make a separate audio file for you and put it in the pool and there you have it we have now covered every subject in the subject of the pool do you feel smarter you should that's a lot of information to absorb and of course all the previous videos are in the navigation guide so if you don't have that be sure to grab it updates have been happening to the navigation guide so most of the subjects are compiled in a nice orderly fashion makes them a lot easier to find so check it out if you haven't looked in a while so the pool quite a list of options and specifically in today's video the talk about the archiving and minimizing your files some of these things are very valuable that you may not think they are until the day comes where you really need them so make sure you always check back if you ever have confusion on these subjects as always great to have you guys here we'll see you on the next video
