today we talk about

The Pool V3 in Cubase 12

hello everybody andrew blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move on to our third video as we discuss the pool in cubase 12. but before we start i want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future i'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or cubase plug-ins or the cable guys shaperbox2 and many many other projects that are in the works then i know you're going to find just like i have that this is an invaluable study aid and the other thing i want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple pdf this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free okay so let's get started so we've been discussing this pool feature in cubase 12 looking at its various options and we're on the third video now all the previous videos are in the navigation guide in the link below but we're going to begin today's discussion zeroing in a little bit on the searching options so to start the searching option go up and hit the button that says search which opens up a bottom area in the screen and the first thing you're going to want to do uh typically is put a name in here so let's say i'm looking for a file called snare so i'm going to put snare in there and if i hit search it shows me there's no files called snare on the search why is that if you look a little further it's only looking in the pool from this little drop down list here so currently in my project i haven't called anything snare yet but if i expand the search out a little bit if i hit this drop down arrow and i go to one of my hard drives and i hit that search button again keep the same name in there now it reveals a huge long list of possibilities so you want to be aware of where you're looking you know to find your missing files so a couple of things to be aware of on the entering of names as you're doing your search you can actually use just partial names so like if i'm looking for snare i can just put in sna or any you know combination of what i think is going to find what i'm looking for if i'm not sure you can also make use of what they call wild cards and you know you'll see this description a lot what's a wild card the wild card is when you use the little asterisks above the number eight on your keyboard so if i put that in here now it says sna with a little asterisk after it so it's going to find anything possibly that could follow that now the thing you want to pay attention to with wild cards because they don't always give you all this information the wildcard option is talking about anything coming after what you've already typed so if i've typed in sna and then i put a wild card it's going to have to follow sna re or sna something it can't be a snare a sna or you know some combination like that the wild card has to proceed from that point on whatever you drive you pick out the search here it's going to go through the folders and the subfolders when you're using this wild card feature just as an extra bit of information put a space after whatever you're searching so if i'm using sna put a little space before i put the asterisk now when i do that the search increases to just a huge amount because it looks for anything possible i can find with that sna in it so if you get tired of looking because it may go through thousands and thousands of results you can hit the stop regarding all these results you can just audition them by clicking on something and then hitting the play button over here again always pay attention to the volume so you don't hurt your ears with this pause and repeat might be a little hard to see because of mine is kind of grayed out but you have auto play so if you enact the auto play the minute you click on the file it begins to play when you're done searching go back up at the top and hit that search button again to shut it down besides just searching as we did there's like this extended search functionality on this when you're looking at this we're going to stick with the thing that says snare for a minute so i have snare in the name when i go to this name drop down of course i can change this to some basic things of size and bit depth and channels and sample rate you can also do these kind of things kind of as a added filter in other words not just one or the other if you go down to this thing that says add the filter you then get these options again basically so let's go down to let's say channels i hit channels so now it's adding the name and the channels and the channels give you the option of mono stereo and all different kinds of channels i can add another filter if i go to this drop down list and i say add the filter let's say i want to go down to the date at the bottom so i put date in now it has options for different dates like last week you know when the files were created so it has to pass all of these different criteria to come into the results so you can come up with some pretty sophisticated and refined searching filters by just adding other things here then if it's something that you spend a lot of time on and you think it's something you're going to have to use again and again you have an option at the bottom of all of these to go down to presets and then at that point you can say save the preset it'll tell you give it a name and then you can always recall this preset later without having to reset up five different filters so if you open up a project where files have been moved or any something that's changed in the files you're going to get hit with this missing files dialog which is irritating to say the least nothing worse than having a project open up and find files have disappeared on you you can perform a bunch of options for searching for your files right here before you open up your cubase project you can locate it and search and do all kinds of things but if you just hit the close option the project continues to open up just like normal your files are gone you know you won't be able to play anything but now you can use the pool so if we go back into the pool for a minute if you look over here on the path side and it shows a bunch of little question marks showing that the files are gone and also where there used to be actual pictures of the you know audio there's just blanks here so you have some clue as to things have been moved or are disappeared but then now you have a couple of options in the pool itself to go ahead and locate your missing file so let's look at some of those so if we right click and get that menu like we normally do and we look down the menu we have an option on here that says find the missing file so let's go ahead and click on that which then reopens up this dialog again that we were hit with in the beginning and you're given these options down here one says search if you hit search it's going to try to find it for you all the different files if you go to locate you'll have the option if you kind of know where to look and the same thing with the folder if you know what folder you're going for so it once this search opens up if we go to the search folder and click on that and then pick what we think is the folder if we know what it is and then come back up here and hit start it'll do its best to find it the thing that first hits you as being somewhat annoying is it wants to do one little file at a time but in essence it really doesn't because if the other files are in the same location it will go ahead and continue to search to find those other files as well so in this case i know what folder they're in because i put them in the folder so we don't have to work too hard but let's see what it does when it tries to find them i've already picked the folder out now i'm gonna hit start at this point it gives me an accept option and if i think that's what i want i go ahead and say accept and without doing anything else the other seven or eight files that were there i don't have to refine them cubase went ahead and figured out the rest of it and then restored all the files for me let's go back to reopening the program with the missing files and let's take this folder option and see what happens so i hit folder and again this assumes that i know kind of what folder it's in and i do so i pick a folder i say select the folder and it did its thing no problem at all all right so there you go more details about the pool still more to go hopefully more insight has been gained now in case you ever lose files as always if you haven't grabbed the navigation guide be sure to grab that before you go links to all the content on the channel ever growing and free to use it's there for your benefit and my benefit so we can learn but we can also review when we need to as we continue to examine the pool in cubase 12 and in this case hopefully we have learned a little bit about finding our missing files which i hope we never have as always great to have you guys here see you on the next video
