The Pool V1 in Cubase 12
hello everybody andrew blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we begin a series of videos as we discuss the pool in cubase 12. but before we start i want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future i'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or cubase plug-ins or the cable guys shaperbox2 and many many other projects that are in the works then i know you're going to find just like i have that this is an invaluable study aid and the other thing i want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple pdf this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free okay so let's get started all right so what is the pool basically every time you record something in cubase you know audio wise it's going to get put into the pool you can open the pool by hitting control p you can also go up to this media menu up on top hit that and open the pool window and either way we'll bring it up into view every bit of audio video etc that's created in a particular project is going to be put into the pool and every project has its own pool the thing is kind of laid out just like any other explorer type window but in the pool you can actually affect the audio files some of the things you can do you can import clips you can convert the files you can rename clips you can delete clips you can prepare files to back them up archive them and you can minimize some files and some of the things that you do when you're in your project like copying or adding processing sometimes saving and importing these things in the pool files all these things will affect how they actually wind up in the pool as we look at this pool window you can see there's already three folders that are automatically created every time you use a pool you have an audio file which also has a sampler kind of subfolder in it you have a video folder and you have a trash folder these can't be renamed but when you add subfolders to them which you can those can all be renamed so just as an example there's a midi track here and i'm going to convert this to audio before i do if i hit ctrl p you can see that again right now in the audio there is no audio files in the pool but if i go ahead and convert this now to audio i'm going to render it in place as you can see now it's become an audio file and if i go back to the pool there is indeed now an audio file created i can close that audio file i can open it back up once i open it up and i can see this file then i can start editing it in some way if i want to in the first column we have a list of columns up here the first one is media which again shows you the audio video and trash you actually have a column that shows how many times it's being used right now mine says one time then you have this status column and this kind of changes depending on what happens the options here you have a record process missing external recorded a bunch of things but let me show you i'm going to close the pool out for a second if i take this audio file and then i go to real time processing in this case i'm going to normalize the file i'll hit normalize and then if i now go back to the pool a tiny little icon has shown up in the status in this case it stands for that this file has been processed and there'll be different icons as we go through this you'll see them change our famous musical mode column which if we check that puts the clip into like a tempo matching you have a tempo column you have a signature column you have a key option if there has a key been assigned right now it shows no key if i click on it i can assign a key to it if any kind of algorithm has been applied the info of the clip as it's been set up in the project in this case 48 000 the bit depth stereo clip in this case it actually shows the length of the clip the type in this case a broadcast wave the date it was created where it begins in the project you're actually given an image of the clip if you click on it it starts playing from where you clicked if you click it it'll move along you can play it at different points and then it shows the path where that clip actually resides on the hard drive if you want to change these columns you can click and drag them in different orders looking at the toolbar you have a first button here that shows the info and at the very bottom of the screen right now it shows nothing down here if i hit this it puts an info bar down here at the bottom if you have a file selected you can hit the play button to play it hit the play button again we'll stop it you have a loop button if you want to keep looping it and very important next to that you have a volume make sure you pay attention to that so you don't blow your ear out you have this view attributes which allows you to basically pick what you know columns you want to see and which ones you don't you can check them or uncheck them you have the option to expand all the folders or collapse them all i want to show you this right away out of order kind of because it's very important if i go to any one of these clips in this case i dragged it into the trash but you don't have to drag it in the trash you can merely select it and if i hit select and i hit delete you have an option to remove files from the pool or erase them this is very very important to understand that if you remove them from the pool you're basically taking them out of this window but if you erase them you have forever after remove them and uh deleted them i found that out the hard way i don't want you to find it out the same way beware that when you erase you won't be able to go to your recycle bin or anything else you have basically permanently erased and deleted those files so use caution when you see that option i would go so far as to say never use the erase option always just use the remove from pool if you really want to erase something off your hard drive open it up in your hard drive folder outside of cubase so there's no confusion i don't want to see anybody ever lose an audio file they didn't mean to lose so you have an import button which allows you to bring in files off your hard drive you have a search allows you to search within the pool and also on the hard drive information up here shows what project folder you're dealing with and also you have a specific folder that shows what the pool records things into you can make other subfolders and change that if you want when you go back and you use the show info line when you go to the bottom it shows you how many audio files are in the pool how many are being used the total size that you're using up and then if you have external files it'll show those and that's important it helps you to understand if you're going to back up your project or you think you've saved something if there's external files attached all right so let's look a little closer at this search button so you have the option to set up different filter types you have the name the size bit depth channel sample rate date and you can add these filters you get a drop down that gives you basically all the different drives you may have on your computer you hit the search button to start it if you find some things you can audition them if you're searching for things that are outside of the pool you have a button that says import so if you find it you can import them into the pool and whatever you're searching for if it's there it'll show up in this results area so as we begin working with this almost all the features that you need besides the different ways that you'll click on things if you right click the context menu it just gives you a whole list of stuff you want to change the name to these you can just double click on them change the name hit enter and away you go if you want to duplicate something you can right click on it and there's an option that says new version hit that and you get a duplicate of the clip you can right click on these things and bring them into the project there's an option that says insert into project and you have the option at the cursor the locators or at the origin let's go ahead and put this at the cursor and it puts that clip in there you can also grab these things and actually physically drag them in if you want to and then just to review that it actually shows how many times the thing is being used so because this first clip is only being used one time that clip has a number one next to it but the other clip is here two times and that clip has a number two next to it before you actually insert an audio clip from the pool you actually have the option to open it in the sampler editor if you want to do something like that if you go to this first little icon and double click on it this thing actually opens up in the sampler editor you can actually change the snap point if that's something you need to do if you have more than one clip selected and then you go to those options insert into the project i'm going to take the option that says at the cursor it asks if i want to uh insert the things into one track or onto different tracks i have that option let's go ahead and put it on one track i'll hit one track at that point you can see that they've put them one right after the other if you have a clip or clips or whatever and you take one of the clips out of the pool and drag it over the one that you have they will just stack up on top of each other but if you do the same thing take it drag it out and put it over the clip but hold shift it actually will replace the existing clip as we said there's various ways to erase remove and delete these clips but proceed with caution on this aspect so the three key ways to delete something is to select it go up to the actual menu that says edit you have an option for delete you can go there the quicker options are to select it hit the backspace key on your keyboard you then have those options of sending it to the trash or removing it from the pool again removing it from the pool is the safe way to do it it still leaves your file on your hard drive somewhere and you can also hit the delete key and it gives you the same option they do try to put a fail safe in here to keep you from accidentally erasing something permanently the trash is like the final destination so if i go to this file and i hit the backspace or delete the options it gives me is removed from the pool or the trash so there's still like a secondary like i said failsafe if i hit trash it actually moves it into this little folder called the trash this is the last stop now if i erase it from the trash now i've erased it from the hard drive before you do that you can always just put it right back into an existing folder it's not stuck in the trash or anything when it's in the trash if you right click on either the trash or the file you have an option down here in the middle it says empty the trash when i click on that i now have a more severe warning basically saying again i can remove it from the pool which is a safe way or i can erase it if i erase it it's gone all right there you go as we start discussing the pool another amazing feature in cubase 12 a way to help you organize and be aware of what files are in your project especially when it comes to backing them up something you may want to really pay attention to as always if you haven't grabbed your navigation guide be sure to grab that before you go links to all the content on the channel free to use and ever growing there to use when you want to learn and there to use when you want to review there it is the pool as we go through it layer by layer as always great to have you guys here we'll see you in the next video
