today we talk about

The Master Section V5 in Wavelab Pro

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our fifth video as we continue todiscuss the master section in wavelabPro but before we start I want to remindyou that there's a link below to thefree content navigation guide which isan easy to navigate webpage with linksto all the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wave lab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on the fifth videoswe've been moving through this mastersection of course all videos as usualare always in the navigation guide inthe link below this video but let's movedown and have a look at this tab thatsays final effects dithering on this tabthings are kind of like entering into itand being affected by whatever effectsyou put here you can do pretty much mostof the usual things we've been dealingwith you can open and close the tabclicking on it you can on and off it orbypass it you can click on a slot andadd a plug of some kind that's listedhere you have the monitoring Point likewe've been talking about if you wantyour meters to read right at this pluginif you open up the plugins you know thatyou put into the slot you have that sameoption where you can hear the wet signalonly you can create presets for whateverplugins you put here and you canindividually bypass you know thatparticular plugin one option I reallylike about this and pretty much all ofthese effect slots for example thisbrick wall limiter I have here if I openthis up typically a lot of thesesettings on the default were differentthe threshold was different than what Itypically use and the inner sampleclipping option was usually turned offso every time I opened up this plug-inif I opened it up I'd have to take a fewseconds to reset the threshold and resetthe sampling and any of these littlekind of things again they take just afew seconds but it would be nice to nothave to do that and you don't becauseonce you open up the plugin and you goto your effects options presets here youcan save that preset and then you canalso hit this option that says thedefault preset where it says make thispreset the default preset then anytime Iopen up this limiter if it's a blankslot and I just open it up it alwaysopens up with that preset already inplace and I don't have to do anything sothat's a great option I like it so thegeneral observation here is you onlyhave these two slots in this finaleffects dithering area tab now maybethere is an option for more slots Ihaven't been able to uncover it to thebest of my knowledge that's all you getis the two slots here so obviouslyyou've got to use them wisely if you'regoing to use them at all because you canonly use two the next thing is for mewith the way wavelab was originallyconfigured if I hit one of these slotsand then I started looking through myoptions of plugins available down herethere have always been just a very smallamount available and again that was oneof those things I didn't quiteunderstand I'm like well there's onlylike three plugins down here to use whatif I had something else I wanted to putinto one of these slots for example Iprefer the master rig just about everytime I use an effect in wavelab even ifI'm only using a limiter and by defaultthere was no option for the master rigin here if I went to my Steinbergplugins or any of any of the optionshere I couldn't find the master rig sofor the longest time I just thought wellI guess that option is not available butactually any plug-in you have isavailable to be put into this slot andthe way you do it is you got to go overto the file tab at the far left here andmove on down to where it sayspreferences and then you actually have atab that says plugins and when you hitplugins you should see most ofeverything that you have on your systemat that point you would just look forwhatever it is you're trying to add intothat slot so I'm going to go to mySteinberg plugins and in this case Ilook down into the mastering area butthe same thing applies to any of theseplugins if you wanted to use them but Iget the little arrow here and all theseplugins have these little check boxesand these check boxes correspond tothese columns above above and one of thecolumns up here says final and thatcorresponds to the final effectsdithering area so if you want to plug into appear there you have to go down thisfinal column find your plug-in and thenjust put a little check by it and that'swhat I did I found the master rig herein the mastering section I put a checkhere in the final column went back to myfile now when I go to the effects wherebefore it didn't show upnow when I go down to Steinberg and Ilook over my column I have an option forthe master rig so I can click on thatand there I get what I'm looking for nowthe only option I use in the master rigwhen I'm using this is I'm using it fora final limiter so I use a preset to getme to that real quick which brings us onto the subject of dithering do we needto dither what is dithering why do we doit do we need it not everybody does tobe honest the idea behind dithering isit actually adds noise to the file whichyou would think would be undesirable butactually it kind of fills in around whenyou're doing these converts from let'ssay 48 000 down to 44 one like I'm doingso it's actually kind of a preferredpractice to smoothen out things I'mgoing to leave that up to you whetheryou think that's what you want to do ornot but that is an option and it's builtin here wavelab kind of leans youtowards putting your dither at the veryvery end of the chain I'm going to clearthis plug-in out for a minute when I goto this top slot that my ditheringplug-in is in here but if I go to mylast slot not only is my ditheringplug-in in here but there's the internaldithering there's another plug-in fordithering that wavelab hasso you get the feeling that wavelab issaying look make sure you put yourdithering in the last slot becausethat's where I'm putting the ditheringplug in so instead of fighting it that'skind of what I do I put my ditheringplug in at the last area here I don'tuse this internal dithering one I do usethe Steinberg there's a Lin dither hereI just click on that guy there's variouspresets in here and various ways you canset this up if you want I I just takethe default the way it opens and leaveit that way and that's how basically Iuse this final effects tab the firstslot I put in a brick wall limiter andthe second slot I put my Lin dither andthat's it now what I want to try to callyour attention to is this is the end ofthe line right here this final effectsdithering tab is the final chain orrather Link in your chain to you knowwhat your audio is going to be there'sanother tab there's actually a couplemore tabs here and we're going to talkabout them but these are more foranalysis and you know listening to yourfiles but everything that's actuallygoing to affect the file and the qualityof the file and the bit depth and theyou know whatever the effects are thatyou're going to use all of that endsafter this final effects dithering thisis the final destinationbesides the rendering option like wesaid once you render that kind of givesyou another set of options and that kindof overrides everything else but as faras moving through this master sectionand really in general moving throughwavelab in general everything ends atthis final effect dithering so a fewneeds to change something you want torealize that everything needs to bechanged prior to this because once youget to this point you have basicallycompleted your processall right so one more thing I'm going totalk about today looking at the metersdepending on where you actually put alimiter in the master section if you usea limiter in this case I put it downhere into the final effects ditheringarea if I play my song and I look at themeters at the fader level herethey are way over zeroand this used to be somewhat disturbingto me because I know I have my limiterset to catch you know in this case I'vegot it really set at negative one but Iknow I've got it set usually alwayssomething to stop anything going overzero but here I'm looking at thesefaders and they're like you knowclipping way over the zero Mark and thisused to you know be irritating to mebecause I know I would I would render itoff and then I would get and be able tosee the readings as they were well againremember that this particular fader andled reading right here is being takenright where these faders areon the other hand the way they'vedesigned this is if you go up to thelevel meter and we talked about thisalready the level meter is designed totake a reading down here after the youknow effects in your dithering and finaleffects area so if you look at my levelmeteron the actual left and right of thedigital output here so it's giving methe true reading of what my limiter isdoing watch what happens when I bypassthe effects down here on the finaleffect I'm going to bypass them rightnowand now these level meters have gone wayup to positive two again way over zeroso now I can see that I'm you know goingover the zero mark I put him back inplay hit the turn the bypass off do ameter reset and now I can see I'm backat negative one again and these thingsare good to know just because it'ssomewhat psychologically irritatingsometimes when you know you've setsomething and yet your meters areshowing like in this case you know wayover the zero Mark even though I know Ihave my limiter let me bring the limiterup hereyou can see on the output here I've gotit set at negative one so knowing thatyou've set your limiter you know tocatch certain Peaks and make sure thatyou don't have any digital clippinggoing on but then still have your meterreading you know way over the zero Markthese kind of things can be veryirritating and somewhat confusingbecause you don't know if it's reallydoing what you want it to do so againyou want to be aware that where themeters actually read as they go throughthe master section and this level meteris designed to take a reading aftereverything so this is your if you'relooking for something to give you anaccurate digital output reading this iswhat you want to look at of course thisis different from a loudness reading butif you're looking just for the levelsand this has the RMS values in it toobut if you're looking for the actualoutput digital output you want to lookat this level meterso we're probably for sure be able towrap it up in the next video the onlything we really have to go through nextis the playback processing but there'sso many Tools in this area I want totake some time and dedicate the lastvideo just to that and that's going towrap it up for today as always if youhaven't grabbed your navigation guide besure to grab that before you go there'slinks to all the content on the channelever growing free to use and constantlybeing updatedtrying to make that journey in thelearning World a whole lot easier thantrying to figure out what the manual istelling you so today what I wouldsuggest use your dithering area downhere in the tab and if you have yourpreferred you know plugins maybe youhave your own limiter you want to trymaybe it's not showing up down here sonow you know how to you know get it toshow up go ahead and go through thosesteps maybe experiment with it putting adither in place if you've never used oneget a feel for how that goes and by thistime you should have a pretty good ideaof what's happening in this mastersectionand as always great to have you guyshere I'll see you on the next video
