The Loudness Meta Normalizer V3 in Wavelab Pro

hello everybody Andrew Lake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our third video as we continue todiscuss the loudness meta normalizer inwavelab Pro but before we start I wantto remind you that there's a link belowto the free content navigation guidewhich is an easy to navigate webpagewith links to all the content on thischannel and besides that in the nearfuture I'm going to begin adding tipsand other bits of information that willonly be available there you know thingslike simple steps that will get youstarted and up and running quick thingsthat are in the videos but are writtendown in simple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper Box 2 and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on the third videonow as we continue to discuss thisloudness meta normalizer as usual allthe previous videos are in the link tothe navigation guide below but let'slead off the day talking about how thisaffects the gainas we've said the the normalizer workscompletely on gain it doesn't usecompression when it raises the levelsbut there's definitely more to the storywhen you start to look at this andexamine it so let's do an example againI'm going to stick with this last littleclip I have here which is very low ingain right now you can see when you lookat the picture it's hardly there at alland when we look at the clip in theinspector we have the inspector tab hereand clip track and output and we'relooking at fader right now and the faderis at zero and I'm going to put mynormalizer to come in and raise theloudness to negative 10 short term sothat's going to be quite a bump to whatwe see right here so let's go ahead andapply this we can see the wave got verybig and as we look over on the clip inthe inspector we can now see that thatfader has been raised quite a bit aswell now here's where it getsinteresting when we start to analyzethis if we go back up to the very topand we look for the tab that says clipsand we've talked about this tab in aprevious video all the different stuffhere but in all the stuff we have hereif we start moving the screen and scrollon over here all the way to the end wecan see that we have two columns one forpre-gain and one for post gain and wecan see that now that the normalizer hasraises clip it has changed the post gainnumbers to a positive18.528 that's a big increase in valuebut what's more important is that now weknow there's a correlation between thispost gain and this actual fader on theclip if I pull this fader on the clipdown you probably can't see it in thevideo but it is changing the numbers onthe post gain up here and right now it'sat positive six if I keep pulling itdown positive five it's eventually goingto go to zero but there it is so we'resaying the post gain and this fader aregiving us the same values and you cansee it's changing the clip as well sowhat exactly is post gain as opposed tothe pre-gain well for the sake of ourdiscussion it's going to be before andafter effects and you're going to see ina minute why that's really important I'mgoing to raise this clip gain way upagain now I'm going to go ahead and puta master rig on this channel I'm goingto add a compressor to it and now I'mgoing to play the song I'm going tobring the threshold down on thiscompressor until I start to see somelevel reduction actually I'm going to gomore than I normally would just so wecan really hear and see the differenceso right now on this low mid band I'mseeing about negative eight in reductionwhich is quite a bit but it allows us tosee because you can really see theyellow bar here here's the interestingthing you would think that if I go overhere and adjust this clip level and takeit down that the amount of compressionand reduction would decrease as wellwell Watch What Happensas I bring it downeven to like no sound at allthe compression stays exactly the sameno change whatsoever if I bring thislevel back upstays exactly the same no changewhatsoever so what are we saying herewhat we're saying is with this masterrig added as an effect to this clipand this fader being a post gain faderwhat's happening is and what the metanormalizer does it changes the level ofthe gain after this effect so it has nobearing on what's going into thiscompressor it's not going to change theeffect level on it it's only what'scoming out of the compressor that'sbeing affected on the other hand if Itake this compressor and try to move itout of the screen the best I can hereand I play this clip again actually Iwant to be able to see my main clip hereand I play my clip nowand I go back and I adjust the pregame Igo to the column says pregame here andagain it's showing right here on thelower mid that is still at negativeeight and we have quite a bit ofreduction if I click on this pre-gaincolumn and wave up allows me to justspin my mouse to change it is I startcranking this upit's also increasing what's going inthis compressor it's now up to negative16 in reduction in fact if I pull thisdown now if I spin it down to nothingit will also take the level of thatcompressor down to nothing so thepregain is what is feeding thiscompressorand you can see the level over here onthe clip the same wayso pre-gain is what's going into thecompressor post gain is what's comingout so that being said you want tounderstand this now as I bring up themeta normalizer again all three levelsof this the clip the audio Montage leveland the master section level are alldealing with post gain in other wordswhatever effects are being added whetheryou put them in the Montage output orthe master section or on the clips whenthe normalizer makes its changes it'sdoing it post effect or post gainhowever you want to think about itmeaning it's not going to make anychanges to the what's going into thecompressor at all so whatever you've setto go into that compressor is going tostay the same no matter what thenormalizer does coming out of it buthere's where it gets more interestingand we turn the master section off andthe monetize section off so now if I goback to the meta normalizer and againI'm looking at my pre-gain and post gainon this clip and they're set at zerowhat you don't usually pay attention tois right below the clips and the verybottom in a tiny little check box youhave the option to actually change thepre-gain and you have a little check boxyou can click on that and now the metanormalizer is not going to affect theoutput of the post gain it's only goingto affect the pregain let's go ahead anddo that I've got it set at negative 10.let's go ahead and apply this and againthe clip's been raised way up but thedifference is when we look at ourpre-gain and post gain up here on theclip tab it is now the pregain that isat positive 18 and been raised up andthe post gain is still at zero so if Iplay this clip and I have nothing in theinspector on the Chain anymore I'vetaken the compressor off if I look up atthe loudness level it's showing rightnow that the short-term loudness isrocking between 10 and 11. it's changinga little bit back and forth but it hasnow changed the clip input level so thisclip itself is now actually at negative10 short term now watch this we can goback to the normalizer now we can addthis compressor again if I play it againthe compressor is already reacting Idon't even have to bring the thresholddown anymore I'm already seeing acertain amount of reduction in the lowmids and even in the basebut now here's the beautiful thingby this whole pre-gain post-gainscenarioI've added a compressor into the chainI've adjusted my pre-gain on my clip sothat the clip itself is at a negative 10lufs short term typically when I add thecompressor or anything else even TheEqualizer sometimes or a limiter oranything I put in here it's going toreduce the gainbecause the effect itself is going tobring the effect down a little bit infact let me bring it down a little bitmore just for demonstration I wouldn'tdo this because it's already set reallygood but I'm going to bring it down alittle bit morecrank it down do I get about three orfour degrees reductionand you can actually hear the sound dipso I'm taking it down enough to where Ican actually hear the sound dip sonormally I would have to go down to theoutput of this module and bring it backup to compensate for that or I'd have tolook at the individual bands any numberof things and if I look at the loudnessup on the meter it's way down atnegative 13. so it's really dipped itdown quite a bitbut the pregain is still at negative 18it hasn't changed a bit and the postgain is at zero watch what happens whenwe bring the The Meta normalizer backinto the picture here also we have to donow is uncheck the thing that sayschange the pregame and it's going toleave the pre-gain alone and now it'sgoing to look at how much thiscompressor has reduced the signal andit's going to do its own calculation andbring it up watch this as I hit applyand now as we look up at the post gainit has decided that it needed to raisethis2.925 to get this compressorrebalanced with what we're trying to doloudness wise let's play itnow I'm back at a very good negative 10on my short-term loudness and also I canusethe on and off of the channel insertitself hereto take the compressor out of the mixand I can hear what effect it's actuallyhaving without any real great volumedifferencesI find that to be an incredible toolso I personally could go on and on withanalyzing the various insights that thismeta normalizer offers but let's takeone more thing that I think is veryvaluable and I want to share it with youand that's the concept of how you canuse this on your reference tracks so I'mgoing to go over and create a referencetrack get the little plus sign in theleft area here hit reference track I'lljust use this first clip as a referencedrag typically with my reference tracksI only want one little section to listento so I'll just use this and I'm goingto actually take this other clip out ofhere for nowthe first thing we want to do is geteverything matched up right so let's dothat so I'm going to go back to my clipthat I'm going to be mastering and I goto my meta normalizer and now I'm goingto work with the pre gain as we've beentalking about I'm going to check thatbox for this example I'm going to set itnegative 10 short term hit apply and nowI got to get my reference track to be atthat same loudness level so what do I doso I take my reference track and I go towhere the reference stack has a littleear on it turn that on and now thenormalizer will only go to the referencetrack so if I turn the meta normalizeron I'm going to do the same thing I'mgoing to have it do the pregain hitapply and now it is set the loudness ofmy reference track to be the exact sameloudness as the clip I'm going to bemastering so now I'm going to play myclipI'm going to switch to my referencetrackand there it is I'm ready to goI can immediately switch back and forthfrom the reference to my clipthey're both loudness matchedand I can get to workthere you go I'm gonna wrap it upas usual if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatbefore you go links to all the contenton the channel ever growing free to useall the content is laid out in order andmakes it easy to find what you'relooking for so it's there to help youand there to help meso did you learn something do you knowthe meta normalizer a little bit betterthan you did that's all you need justknow it a little bit better than you didyou may find a whole new door open up interms of how you analyze and hear yourmusic I have found it to be quite thetool and I'm really surprised it doesn'tget talked about any more than here Imean really if you try to search for itor get information on it you might get alittle snippet of something but no oneever talks about it like we just did soI'm just really surprised by thateither way as usual it's great to haveyou guys here makes it a real joy to dothese videos to share the knowledge andI'll see you in the next video
