The Loudness Meta Normalizer V2 in Wavelab Pro
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our second video as we examine theloudness meta normalizer in wavelab butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper Box 2 and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on the second videoof this loudness meta normalizerprevious video is in the navigationguide in the link below and in that lastvideo we kind of started to take a basiclook at the normalizer and what are someof the things it can do but today let'sgo ahead and run it through some testsand see what kind of results we getwe're going to examine the fadersettings and how it affects the fadersas we go through this for example if Ilook at my inspector and I hit the clipand I look down at the fader right nowit's at zero if I go to the track rightnow it is at zero if I go to the outputof the Montage it is at zero if I go tothe master section right now it is at 0and all effects have been removed fromthe chain temporarily we're going to putsome in as we go right now in the masterI have no limiting dithering anythinglike that and in the inspector on thetrack clip or output there is also NoEffects whatsoever let's take our songhere we're going to open up the metanormalizer and we're going to start byexamining what happens on the clip leveland we're going to do all our testsusing negative 14 short term that meansin this loudness area it's going to beset to negative 14 and this third littledrop down we're going to pick the optionthat says maximum short term loudness wehave one for reference the entire clipand reference the top of the loudnessbut we're going to go for the short termand then our last option which gives usignore Peaks limit digital or true Peakswe're going to stay with the one thatsays ignore the Peaks so let's go aheadand set this clip up at negative 14maximum short term loudness apply thisand this clip was pretty close to thatalready there was only a slight littleadjustment there that it made but if welook over at our clip gain control ithas now been set to plus 0.82 so it hasput a slight increase on the gain of theclip itself let's look at the trackcontrol that remains at zero our outputremains at zero if we go to our Mastersection it remains at zero so the onlyadjustment it made is that the clipitself let's go ahead and render thisoff and run some tests on it so here wehave our rendered file Let's do ananalysis on thisopen up the analyze run an analysisand we have short-term loudness exactlyat negative 14. so adjusting the cliplevel with the meta normalizer producedan exact result in the loudness maximumat the end here let's close this out ofhere I'm going to undo what thenormalizer did here which is seteverything back to zero and that's goodnow let's go ahead and put thenormalizer on hereand do the same thing but only go to theMontage output instead we'll stay withmatches specific loudness we'll make itnegative 14. we'll stay with the shortterm loudness ignore the Peaks and let'sapply it now when we look at the clip ithas remained at zero when we go to thetrack it has remained at zero when we goto the output now that is showing anincrease of 0.82 so it's still it didthe exact same increase that it did atthe clip level only now I did it at theoutput and if we go to the mastersection they remain at zero let's goahead and do a render on this againlet's do an analysisand again perfect negative 14. so we canprobably draw a conclusion that it'sgoing to do the same thing on the masterbut let's go ahead and check it out backto our original clip I'm going tocontrol Z out of this check all myfaders make sure they're back at zeroand they are open up the meta normalizeragain turn off the Montage output andinstead go to the master section Mashspecific loudness same thing negative 14reference short-term loudness ignore thePeaks let's apply itnow when we look at our clip again theclip has remained at zero track is atzero output is at zero but now when wego to the master section the masterfaders are now at Point 82. let's goahead and render it off Let's do ananalysisand again our short-term loudness is ata perfect negative 14.so what can we draw in a conclusion tothat the conclusion is as long as thechain is clean as long as we didn't putany effects in the chain which we'regoing to do in a minute and see whatthat does to it but as long as the chainis clean and we use our meta normalizerwhether it's on the clip level on theMontage output or on the master sectionit did the same exact gain bump that itneeded on the clip or the output or themaster section as necessary and in theend when we did an analysis each resultwas at a perfect negative 14. so beforewe go to adding a limiter and some othereffects I want to see let's turn themall on so that the clip level is on theMontage output is on and the mastersection all doing the same thing andlet's see what result we get out of thislet's apply it if we start from thebeginning at the clip we now have ourbump of 0.82 track has remained at zerothe output is remained at zero and themaster section has remained at zero sowith all three of those options selectedthe clip kind of did the uh all the workso undo everything put it all back andlet's go ahead and go to the mastersection and I'm going to put a limiteron this nowI'm going to use the brick wall and themaster rig on the limiter I'm going toset the output to a negative 0.1 oversampling on Auto release on and I'mthrowing a dither on the final effecthere and I'm going to start off doingthe same thing I just did I'm going torun all three of them the clip theMontage and the master section and let'ssee who takes control this time I'mgoing to hit applyand it did exactly the same result itgave me the 0.82track status 0 output State at zerothe master section stayed at zero evenwith that limiter in placelet's go ahead and render this and seewhat we wound up with this time let's doan analysis on this final audio and it'sstill at negative 14. so it stayed righton it all right let's push the gas downa little bit further here let's runthese tests and throw some compressionon here and see what the meta normalizerdoes with that and just for fun let's goahead and add this into the mix if I godown to this playback processing in mymaster wavelab gives me this tbp Vumeter down here for those out there thatlike to use the Vu meter let's have alook at how this responds to everythingas wellup on the reference level I can actuallyset that so I'm going to turn that downto negative 14. I'm going to go aheadand re-process my audio just at the cliplevel back at negative 14 again applythat reconfirming that as beforethat the clip level has been bumped upto a positive 0.82 so that's the same goahead and make a loop Point here and ifyou saw my video on snapshots now you'regoing to see the beauty of using thosethings I'm going to make a selection putthe cursor in the middleclick my camera and then make a snapshotalright so let's play just a little bitof thiswe can see it's bouncing around prettygood on the bu meter right around thezero markoccasionally going up into the redoccasionally staying below it so goodfor observational purposes all right sowhat I want to do go to the clip I'mgoing to bring in a master rig it's gotan EQ on it but it's it's zero balancedout not really doing anything I'm goingto go ahead and add a compressor intothis mix I'm going to make a few changeson these parametersand now I'm going to bring thecompressor threshold down until I canhear some gain reduction that's what I'mlooking for is I want to be able to hearthe gain change because I want to hearwhat the meta normalizer does tocompensate for that between two and ahalf and three DBS of game reduction onthe mids and the low end here knowingthat let's go ahead and run the metanormalizer and see what effect this hasI'm going to leave the settings as theyare I'm going to hit apply watch TheWave change because the meta normalizerwill look at the gain of this wave nowthat the compressor has been added to itand it's going to change the gain onthis clip so let's watch what it doesheremade a very very tiny increase notreally very muchlet's look at our numbers real quick allright so on the clip it's now bumped itup to 0.99 so it was at 0.82 and it hadto take it up a few notches to 0.99 tocompensate for what the compression didto it make a quick look at all the otherparameters everything's the same theoutput's still the same the mastersection is still the same let's go backto the master rig now that it's addedthat gain and see what it's done to ourcompression levelsand the compression levels are exactlythe same so even though it's adjustedthe gain on the clip it hasn't doneanything to the compression levels allright so let's go ahead and render thisoff and see what effect we've causedhereLet's do an analysis on this clip andit's given us exactly negative 14. I'm alittle surprised at that one I wasexpecting a slight deviation so evenwith that heavy compression which causeda certain amount of gain reduction TheMeta normalizer re-read it and adjustedthe gain on the clip to bring us back toa perfect negative 14. let's look atwhat the Vu meter is doingforeignERS responding as before a little bit inthe red a little bit belowso the meta normalizer is correlatingwith the bu meter let's try it againlet's go to our clip compression we'regoing to save this as a preset now let'sreset everything to zero againclip track output all set to zero Mastersection all set to zero our clip hasbeen reset back to its original statelet's go ahead and put this compressionon the outputI'll go to the effects of the outputload a master rig up use those exactsame settings because I'm going to loadthat preset that I just createdlet's go back to our meta normalizerthis time we're going to turn it off onthe clip side we're going to turn it onand the audio Montage output let's hitapplyand we got no difference on the cliplevel on the output again 0.99 so it isit's very accurate in terms of whetherit's on the output or the clip I'm surethe master is going to do the same thingit takes the same readings it makes thesame adjustments no matter which way wego here I'm a little surprised by that Idid expect the output to be slightlydifferent than the clip let's look atthe master section real quick Mastersection is still at zero it's doingremarkably well here let's go ahead andrender this off at this point I think wecan pretty much assume what we're goingto see here let's go ahead and AnalyzeThisah okay our first discrepancy theshort-term loudness now is at 14.3 sowhen we moved the compression off of theclip and onto the Montage output we lostsome of the complete accuracy that we'veexperienced so far let's look at the Vumeter real quickseems to be reading slightly lower whichwould correlate because we're moving upfrom 14 to 15 to 16. Let's reseteverything againand let's do one final one let's seewhat the master section does with ourcompressor on there I'm going to movethis limiter down a couple of notchesand then I'm going to add in the masterrig on the master section here open upmy preset and let's run the metanormalizer on this againturn off the audio Montage output put onthe master section still set at negative14 short term let's apply itas we go through our clip and our outputall set is zero no changebut now we come to the master sectionnow we're at a full plus onelet's go ahead and render this off andsee what we haveand let's do an analysis on this and nowwe're back to a perfect 14 again we putour compression on the master sectionsame accuracy as we did at the cliplevel so what does this all mean well Ithink it's too early to tell I think weneed to run a few more tests and gathersome more data here and make somecomparisonsbut there's no doubt about it that themeta normalizer is an amazing tool asusual if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatbefore you go links to all the contenton this channel ever growing free to useit's there for your benefit it's therefor my benefit and we can learn from itand we can also use it to review that'swhat I like to use it for so theloudness meta normalizerquite the power pack tool we have herein terms of making accurate gainadjustments and reliable results we'regoing to explore it a little bit morebefore we wrap it all up as usual it'sgreat to have you guys here we'll seeyou on the next video
