The Control Room V4 in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from Thedigitalaudiomanual.com Today we'removing on to our fourth video as wediscuss the control room in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper Box 2 and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime video videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on the fourth videonow the discussion of the control roomas always the previous videos are in thenavigation guide link below and I wantto lead off today as we talk aboutsetting up headphones but I have to goon record here with a slight disclaimeron this because I've done a bit ofresearch on this now and I've checkedout some various experts as they'veexplained their bit on this situationand in my opinion this is one of thereasons why this stuff becomes soconfusing because it's explained withthe hope and promise of all theseamazing features without really givingyou the clarity that if you don't havethe hardware you can't do it so I'mgoing to go on record here by startingto say that in order to end theconfusion I want to say that you'reeither on one of two paths when youenact this control roomand path one would be something likethis you have an elaborate sound cardwith many outputs you potentially havedifferent speaker setups that mimic aprofessional studio environment in someway you're probably going to berecording multiple musicians andvocalists all with different needs thiskind of a thing and then there's thepath too you probably have a smallproject Studio maybe it's just youyourself you have a smaller sound cardwith maybe a few or even just one outputthe thing is both paths that you couldbe on can enjoy benefits from thecontrol room the thing you have tounderstand is they're not the samebenefits and that's really the thingthat you have to come to grips with aswe continue on this and go along I'mprobably going to reference if you're onpath one with the fancy Studio or pasttwo just a simple at home situation sothat you're not lost and more confusedby this whole subject and that leads usto the first point we want to talk aboutand that's the headphone option here solet's bring our control room back up andlet's go up to the studio tab again downto our audio connectionsand as you go to your control room andright click inside here you have theoption to add a headphone so I'm goingto go ahead and add the headphone nowyou can only add one of those and onceit's added I can open it up and now as Ilook at it just like all our otherconnections we have here we have theoption to click on it and add it to thedriver on my sound card and or add it tosome various outputs that I have here onmy sound card let's go ahead and do thatI'm going to hit the sound card optionhere and put my sound card in and it'sdiscovered that I have a couple ofoutputs here that weren't already beingused by my existing speaker setup soit's allowed me the option to use thoseI can click on this device board areaand change that if I want but I onlyhave so many outputs anyway so thisphone connection that we're allowed tomake in our control room in my opinionreally is designed for someone who mayhave a sound card that does not alreadyhave dedicated headphone connections onit allowing you to plug headphones intoyour sound card for someone like thatyou could then set up externalconnections which you could run to anexternal headphone amp and then youcould have the features you need forheadphones as a main control headphoneconnection on the other hand if you'relooking for something that's a mix thatyou're sending to other musicians inyour session the Q mix is really the wayto go in that situation in the lastvideo we talked about setting up the Qmixes and what that was all about butlet's do one little detail here to kindof add extra Clarity to the situation ifyou look at my setup here I have a q1set up and it shows not connectedbecause I've already explained that youcan use these for various things even ifthey're not connected to any kind ofHardware outputs on the other hand ifthis q1 was going to my main vocalistand my second Q was going to the guitarplayer and the third queue is going tothe drummer etc etc again I would haveto send those cues to some kind ofexternal hardware output that wouldactually be wired to some kind ofheadphone connection for thoseindividual musicians and vocalists nowthe thing is on this cue that I have setup it's a stereo cue so if I was to sendfour stereo cues out well that's goingto take a lot of connections fortunatelywhen we set up a queue let's go back anddo it I have one left here we have theoption for Q4 here the connections canbe mono or stereo so I can set it tomono and say okay and now my Q4 would bejust a single wire out of my sound cardto a headphone amp which would allowthat particular artist or vocalist tolisten to it when we have q setups ifwe're going to go that way if we'regoing to set up individual cue setupsfor individual performers now if youlook at your control roomeach individual cue has a range of extracontrols all on their own for example ifq1 here was actually going to let's saymy vocalist and I set up a q send theway we talked about in the last videowhere you can set individual levels forthat particular queue this artist wouldbe able to in their headphones decide dothey want to hear the full mix or byclicking another button they could heartheir particular Q mix which would morethan likely have their voice louder andthe music softer they have control overan individual volume control right herethey have control over TalkBack whichwe're going to talk about here shortlyand they have control over whether theywant to turn the click on or off whetherthey want to turn the volume of theclick up and down or whether they wantto pan the click to a certain place andthen every other person's cue would bealso allowing them to have their ownindividual settings so in that way it'sa very good option for the individualsthat need to use these Q setups and Qmixes but again if they don't have theconnections on your song card to connectto them they're not going to be able touse them any different than youlistening in your main controlenvironment and then the last thing Iwant to say about the headphones ingeneral on my particular sound cardwhich is the Steinberg Ur 44 it has twoparticular headphone jacks on it thereis no way to hack into that to changethose particular outputs to mimic thisin any particular way it allows you tohear the different cues as you set themup all the different volume levels as weset them up here but they are hard tofind by Steinberg is set up in the unititself and your sanker could be exactlylike that or it could be unique to itsown design alright so let's try to covera few more options here before you wrapthis up let's go on to the externalinputs external inputs could be you knowa CD player could be one of your gamesit could be your smartphone could be anydevice you can hook up a wire into yoursound card from the external devicelet's go up to Studio down to our audioconnections and if I right click in inthe control room area now I have anoption that says add external input andme I haven't used any of these yet so itsays I have six available of these soI'm going to go ahead and say okay andnow I can give it a name let's go aheadfor clarity we'll call this CD playerand we can make it in mono stereo or allthose many different surround optionsand different configurations let's staywith stereo and then as usual I can goover to the audio device pick my soundcard it gives me what options I have forinputs that are left that I'm not usingyet let's close this out and now if welook at our main area here in thecontrol roomas well as our mix and all our differentQ cents that we've set up we now have abutton that says external and if weclick on that we would be hearingwhatever the external is an addedbenefit that you can use with these kindof things once you've set them up let'sgo over and create an audio track and asI'm setting up my audio track and I getthis dialogue that asks me what kind ofaudio inputs I want to use of course Ihave the typical ones that I always usebut now if I hit this drop down list Ialso have a new option that goes downand says connect a bus control room andit actually says the CD player or itcould be game or like we said your phoneor whatever you've put on here at thispoint if I create this and add the trackthis would now allow me to on this trackrecord the audio from that device justlike I would from a microphone or anyother instrument I have so you havethose extra phone messages on your phoneyou want it back up there you go andthen let's finish off with this idea ofthe talk back option so the TalkBack issomething typically that allows theengineer the producer whoever's runningthe board here in the control room totalk to his individual performers theTalkBack allows this control person tohit a button and say hey vocalist areyou hearing yourself good enough andthey say yeah I'm okay but turn me up alittle bit and then you can adjust itwhatever so it gives you communicationeven though you may actually be in twodifferent rooms now like me I have onemicrophone that's hooked up and that'swhat I use and you can use thismicrophone in the TalkBack scenario I'mgoing to show you here but I wouldrecommend if you're going to actuallyset this up to have some kind ofdedicated microphone separate fromanything you would use in a performancesituation have a dedicated just to talkback but let's set one up so we go backup to our studio and we come down to ouraudio connections and we right click onthis list which is now becoming quitelong and now we have an option down herethat says add TalkBack so so I click onthat and you only get one and it has tobe in mono and it would be the samething I would have to click the audiodevice and set up the port I'm going togo ahead and do this but when I do thisit's going to steal it from my originalconnection because I only have onemicrophone but let's go ahead and do itso I hit my connections and I go down towhere I know it says microphone in I'mgoing to click that and it's telling methat that's already being used becausethat's what you're hearing me talk onright now and if I do it it's going tobasically interrupt it in fact before Ido that let me show you where it's beingused so you understand that if I go backinto this list of stuff in audioconnections Tab and I look at the tabway of the beginning that says theinputs this is where I've set up andthis is a whole different video initself but this is where I've set up mysound card inputs and I've taken two ofthem one from my guitar one for mymicrophone but when I change these nowfrom the control room and make it workin the control room it's going to stealit out of this input area so let's do itand go to my list device port I go downthe microphone in that I know it's hereI say continueso this Probably sounds a lot differentbecause now it is coming through thesound card itself and one thing you haveto be aware of when we do this if I goto my audio connections if I go down tomy studio setup now under the studiomenu and I look for my sound card and Ilook under the control panel option overhere what I'm hearing is definitelyaffected by latency of the sound card soif the latency is high I'm going to heara big delay I have turned my latency allthe way down just so I can hear it butI'd never be able to do this in actualpractice close this out but now thismicrophone is being run through my soundcard and if I look up at q1the TalkBack button is on which could beturned offthe volume can be changed up or down seethat and the other thing you can do nowwhen you're using the TalkBack featureas long as this button's down you'llhear me if I turn this button off youcan't hear me but now you can enactthese insert options if we go down tothis main Tab and go to inserts and nowI have a TalkBack tab when I hit that ifI wanted to put a compressor on here I'msure if I did it'll probably justtotally crash the system so I'm notgoing to do it but I could add acompressor to try to even out my voicewhile I'm talking to the performers sothat's how the TalkBack works and that'sgoing to wrap it up for today as usualif you haven't grabbed your navigationguy be sure to grab that before you gothere's links to all the content on thechannel ever growing free to useall the subjects in order and easy tofindso we have made some progress on ourcontrol room hopefully we've shed somelight on some areas that may have nothad light shed on them before but that'swhat we do here and we're going tocontinue to shed the lightbecause that's what we do hereas always it's great to have you guyshere and I'll see you in the next video
