Set up a cue mix

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudium manual.com today we moveon to our third video as we continue todiscuss the control room in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper Box 2 and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or in anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on the third videonow as we continue to discuss thecontrol room in Cubase as usual previousvideos in the navigation guide in thelink below but let's lead off todaytalking about Q channels the Q channelis something that allows you to set up adiscrete mix of your own different fromwhat the main stereo mix is and thesecome in real Handy for singers orsomebody that's going to play a partthat they have to overdub onto somethingso let me give you a basic example firstand we'll break it downwhen you're looking at the mixer everychannel on the mixer has an option for aq send but you can't see it unless youturn on the rack view for Q sends solet's do that real quick if I go up tothe top of the mixer and I go over towhere it says racks hit the drop downlist and there's an option right downhere that says Q sends and when I clickon that now when I look through my mixerand all the various things I have openat any given time there's an area righthere that says cues and depending howmany Q sends I've set up and you havethe option to set up up to four of themyou will see them in the queue area inthe rack so this is a very typicalscenario you have a production it'sMidway through or you're moving alongyou got you know 30 some tracks goingyou've got a basic mix going that youreally don't want to disrupt at themoment but you or someone is coming into do a vocal take and they have to beable to hear themselves so instead ofspending half the day remixing it sothat everything is at a lower volume orthe right instruments are in place forthe singer to hear themselves you can goto your queue settings once they're setup properly and just turn them on likeif I hit this one right here it lightsup and when I hit it again it turns offso I can set up a cue for my voice whichI'm doing right now and that's whatyou're hearing man is accusing but I canalso set up a q send for the whole mixof the project so if I turn this on if Istart my projectand I turn on this Q send[Music]it's very loud compared to my voice andto remix it or to try to change it wellit's going to be a lot of time investedwhereas if I set up a q mix and if I gointo my control room once I've set up acube mixes all I have to do is hit thelittle button that says C1 stands forthe Q mix watch what happens when I dothatmusic playing I'm screaming over top ofit I hit q1 and all of a sudden theMusic Drops back because the Q mix I'vegot the music turned way down in fact Ican turn it all the way up and I canbring it up as I need to so again for asinger this is an excellent optionnow before you can use these Q mixes youhave to actually set them up so we goback up to our studio tab like we'vedone before go down to where it saysaudio connections and now we go to ourcontrol room and when we right click inthis area we then have our menu thatgives us the various options for thedifferent output buses and one of themyou'll see here says add q and againdepending on how many you've used so farit'll tell you how many are left oravailable if you haven't used any yetit'll tell you there's four available ifyou're like me I've used three of themso it says I have one available if I goahead and say add the queue and I clickon it I'm giving a little dialogue I canchange the name if I want to or I canjust leave it as Q4 whatever they wantto call it I can change theconfiguration from mono to stereo and Isay okay once you have a cue in placesame things we've talked about before inthe audio connections you have an optionover on device Port depending on yoursound card and how many outputs you haveyou can then Define a particular outputthat you want your Q to go O2 but hereagain is one of those things that can bevery confusing at first I know it wasfor me these Q cents are just as usefuland are able to work even when they arenot connected for example right now myfirst cue here says not connected thatmeans there's no speakers that thisqueue is going to in terms of adedicated output speakers so thequestion is how in the world do you usethem how can you hear them if they'renot connected to anythingso the best thing I can try to offer youhere to help you understand this ifyou're not familiar with it is think ofit like this when you start using the Qsends they in many ways take over anddivide your existing sound card outputsamong the different Q outputsso it's almost like an extra set ofoutputs that you don't that you reallydon't know you have so let me give youthis scenario and see if it makes anymore sense to youso again if if you look in my controlroom here I have buttons down here thatsay mix Ctrl 1 control 2 control 3because I have a lot of them hooked upbut let's just focus on let's say themix and control one for a minute and tryto understand how this works actually sowhen I hit it to mix when I'm on thebutton that says mix this is just likeyou would normally have your system setup and everything is going to your mainoutput speakers and if I play my songand I try to adjust the cue setting forthe background musicit makes no differencebecause right now the queue has nottaken overbasically when I go to mix I've turnedthe cues off on the other hand when I goto my q1[Music]now the cues are the main mixing outputsand now I can control them with theirown separate turn it up turn it downturn it up turn it down so the cues arebasically their own mixing area and yourmain mix has its own mixing area okay solet me offer one more scenario whereusing these cues comes in really handyand that's when you're using a referencetrack let's start by bringing a track into use as a reference track I'm justgoing to grab something off my computerclick on it drag it into Cubaseand I'm going to immediately just goahead and turn this down buying wise allright so I'm playing my projectand I want to set the reference track soI can hear it so typically the way thisis set up I'll hit soloand I'll bring up the volume on thisreference track[Music]and in its simplest form you could justdo it like that probably many people doand I used to do it this way so like ifthe song is playing I'll go back andforth solo my reference track against mymusic something like thisforeigncomes in on a situation like thisespecially if you go to your stereo busand you start adding any effects at allsome kind of compression or limiting oranything at all on your stereo bus ifyou leave things connected this way yourreference track is also going to beplaying through those effects whichcauses you to no longer have anobjective reference track to listen toanymore because now you're compressingand limiting and whatever else to yourreference track which defeats the wholepurpose of a reference track on theother hand if I go to the referencetrack itself and we haven't looked atthis yet but just like in the mixer youcan go to the inspector window itselfhere and come down and there's an optionthat says Q sends and you can actuallyactivate a q send right here on thetrack which allows you to turn thevolume up and down right here of theactual track typically what you're goingto want to do if you do something likethis you're going to want to go to thereference track itself off and up at thevery top where you have it set out togoing to in this case I have it going toa stereo output which is my main soundcard out you want to switch that to nobuswhat that does is it makes sure thatyour reference track is only comingthrough the Q send and not through theactual sound of the stereo outputs sonow I have something like this where Ican play my mix which is going throughmy stereo outputsbut now if I come down and go to controltwo which mine is now going through thiscontrol two if I hit thateverything goes quiet and at that pointI can come to this reference trackI can go to my qsens tab and make surethat the queue number two is turned onand now I can turn up the level of myqueuemost time you'll zero that one right outbecause you want it to be true to whatthe volume is coming out but you canadjust it whatever you wantbut now I have a perfect referenceability to change back and forth betweenthe mixand my cue number two[Music]and this allows me to do an excellent ab comparison between my reference to myactual mix because my reference is notgoing through any kind of processing onmy main stereo bus now even if there'sno processing on a stereo bus I findthis to be an excellent option justbecause I can set the volumesindependently I'm not constantly worriedabout this being muted or not mutedthrough my stereo or trying to adjust itin comparison to my stereo once it's setup in the control room on its own Q mixit's just an excellent way where you canbounce back and forth and this option Ifind to be just very usefuland that's it for today as usual if youhaven't grabbed your navigation guide besure to grab that before you go there'slinks to all the content on this channelever growing and free to use and most ofthese topics that have video One videotwo video three Etc now have their ownheadings so you can just click on it andwatch the whole group of subjects if youwant so if you're new to this and you'venever messed with cues you might want tomess around with them and try a few whatyou're going to want to do is go underyour studio menu set up a few Qconnections hit the queue button in yourcontrol room now that you learned whatyou can do in the control room and setup some separate mixes and that'll bringyou up to speed on how this all works aswe continue to move through all thesubject matter on the control roomand as usual great when you guys arehere I'll see you on the next video
