Welcome to the Song Production Series. Here we are going to go through how to Produce, Mix and Master songs from the beginning idea unto the finished Master. It is the goal of this series to create blueprints that will help start the creative process and see it through to completion on each song. In todays episode we are going to look at Song Production 8 6 22-Building a First Section
thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we are going to look at how to move on from our initial ideas to building a first section but before we start i want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future i'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or cubase plugins or the cableguys shaperbox2 and many many other projects that are in the works then i know you're going to find just like i have that this is an invaluable study aid and the other thing i want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple pdf this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free okay so let's get started so in the last video we kind of began the process from nothing to getting a basic idea down and that basic idea just came from basically just jamming some some simple ideas building a chord track and then developing some initial parts and we wound up with this [Music] but now we have to kind of work it a little bit and turn it into something more so one of the first things i'm going to do is put everything into one main tune folder and that serves a couple of purposes for me first of all it allows me to quickly clean up the desktop when i'm coming up with other tracks and besides that when i start chopping things up which i'm going to be doing here i can just chop up this folder and i know that all the little tracks inside are going to get affected as well and that also allows me to do this next thing i'm going to do which is go to my mute tool and mute the whole thing i'm going to start with no sound and take everything out of the mix for a minute and we're going to focus on just a couple of elements so i'm going to move my loop area down to just four bars for a few minutes here while i focus on this and i'm going to take my piano part and my synth part and i'm going to use those to start with and that's kind of um the blueprint we're going to use on this one is we're going to start with just a simple two elements so we have this okay sounds okay they balance the the sounds work together but what we're going to do is we're going to find a way to take these two elements and basically kind of have them work off each other instead of just having the elements play they're actually going to be talking with each other and some some will refer to this as call and response there's many ways to you know use tools like this to try to get some some kind of interest going now that i've created the basic parts and the chords it gives me so much freedom to start doing variations to my parts because with my chord track and will allow me a lot of freedom to just experiment for example so i have this basic piano part as it was then that was basically just you know real simple initial ideas out of there so what i can do now is i can mute this part and i can perform another piano part and the chord track and i are basically going to collaborate together because i'm going to kind of play the rhythms that i want or feel you know just kind of go for a feel of it but the chord track is going to determine the chords so i don't have to think too much about it so what i can do now is i can experiment and maybe come up with something a little bit more interesting on this piano part [Music] i also i'm gonna it'll also pick up velocities because i can play it harder softer instead of just straight robotic i can get that human feel in there so let's do some playing of that [Music] and when we finally get something [Music] so the next thing i want to do is take my basic synth pad and see what i can do to kind of add some interest to that and cubase has the fx modulator which is new let's see what we can do with that guy go to my channel strip look for modulation and right there fx modulator now there are all tons of videos in the navigation guide on how to use the fx modulator so if it's something you're interested in you can just check those videos out i'm going to start by using the filter here maybe add some pan to it i'll just use one of these crazy pre-made shapes here and once i get something i like as i said i want to try to get these two uh sounds to kind of work off each other so right now they're playing together but i want them to kind of i want one to affect the other so what i'm going to do to achieve that is i'm going to use the piano to side chain against the synth you can go right into the channel strip itself i'm going to set up a compressor here and over here on the right there's a button that sets up side chains i'm going to turn that on and if i hold alt and click on that same button it opens up the dialog that allows me to find a source i'm going to look down here for the piano [Music] let me turn the volume of the piano down i've got it set so it's pre-fader it doesn't matter you can hear that the synth is being ducked by the piano part so another thing you're going to see me do a lot as we proceed through this is i'm going to look for how i can basically change something around every four bars or something all right so i'm working on an eight bar pattern here so the first four bars i'm gonna have do something but the second four bars i want something else happening so i'm gonna i'm gonna be okay with my initial synths happening here on the first four bars when we go here the first four bars okay but the second four i don't want it to just repeat the same thing so now i'm going to take advantage of some of my um drum sounds so let's loop that second half second four bars here and let me bring in some of my drum sounds i'll bring in the hi-hat for sure and maybe the shaker [Music] so now let's see what we got here if we go back and do the whole thing we have this [Music] all right you see how things develop you know they don't just loop they right away there's something happening and then something else happening and we just keep going from there again another option we can do is to kind of spice up these parts again that we're played fairly simply just to get the the groove basic groove going so you know our hi-hat just a simple hi-hat but now if i go into the hi-hat channel and i look over on the left into the inspector i have an option here where i can click it and select a general midi map instead of just a general midi editor when i click on this part i get to open up this midi hi-hat in the drum editor you can see that there's tons of videos on the drum editor and they're all in the navigation guide and i can use my little drumstick to put in some fills super easy super quick and now we've gone from a very basic hi-hat to something like this [Music] just you know the simplest things and now we're really starting to spice it up next time we will figure out how to take this beginning idea and make it even more developed that's it you guys haven't grabbed your navigation guide be sure to grab that before you go links to all the content on the channel ever growing there to learn and there to review as we continue along building this track as always glad to have you guys here we'll see you on the next video
