today we talk about

Snapshots in Wavelab Pro

hello everybody Andrew Blake from the digitalaudiomanual.com today let's talk about snapshots in wavelab but before we start I want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future I'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or Cubase plugins or the cable guys shaper Box 2 and many many other projects that are in the works then I know you're going to find just like I have that this is an invaluable study Aid and the other thing I want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple PDF this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything up updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free Okay so let's get started so let's talk about snapshots this is one of those things that again it's one of those great little features probably pay no attention to and then wonder why it's such a struggle to get around and wavelab besides the snapshots I want to talk about some other things that are very valuable just as far as moving around but let's do a quick example of what the snapshot feature is to access this and you want to be in a montage and you want to be on your view tab once you're on a view tab it's as simple as you know bringing up something that you want to take a snapshot of and then over here in about the very last section of the toolbar there's a thing that says snapshots you'll see there's a little camera here and there's little buttons above and the buttons may or may not be grayed out depends on whether you've set up snapshots yet or not if you've set them up they'll be blue and if you use them after that you'll just be overwriting what you have on those but let's use one so we have a selection here and a zoomed in area all you have to do is hit the cam camera which then activates these buttons and you pick the button you want let's say I'm going to go to button one and that's it done deal now I've taken a snapshot let's Zoom back out of this let's go to uh this clip and I'm going to make a little selection here I'm going to hit my camera I'm gonna go to number two Snapshot I'm going to zoom back out and I'll just leave it zoomed out because I want the whole thing so I'll hit my camera I'll hit the third button snapshot when I hit button one I'm immediately taken to that first snapshot button number two takes me to that one and button number three immediately takes me to my full view each one of these snapshot buttons are unique to their own Montage so when you save the Montage you save these but this last one if you use it is shared among all the montages so it's kind of a universal one so let's look at these options real quick because this is what makes this thing so powerful right next to the camera you have a little drop down when you hit that you have these options to check or uncheck and what it's telling you is that the snapshot is going to remember the scroll position and the zoom it's going to remember the cursor position which is incredibly great and it's going to give you the option to actually remember the audio selection and I'm going to show you just how powerful that is in a second it has a fourth option if you want to do the clip selection that's usually unchecked by default but you could check it if you want it but let me show you exactly why this is so great I'm going to close this montage and I'll open up a montage that's typically like I would have if I was mastering something here's a typical scenario when I'm mastering something I will typically make a selection over a particular course or area of a song that I want to listen to over and over again I'll hit the loop you know to auto play over that selection probably bring up the master rig and be doing various things with that and during the course of working on it somehow or another something will get clicked you know off the Montage now see it's starting over again so I will have to like go back and make my selection again in this case I have to move the master rig out of the way I'll make my selection again maybe I need to zoom in to a particular spot because I need to check something that's over in another part of the song But now to resume I have to zoom back out I have to go back over to the part that I'm working on I have to make a selection there you get the idea I mean there's a lot of moving around that occurs in the process of actually mastering a track because the snapshots not only remember a audio selection but they also remember where the cursor is so if I stick the cursor in the middle of this audio selection and now I hit my camera and I hit my number one I've taken that snapshot it makes no difference what I'm doing somewhere else if I have to zoom in if I have to make another selection whatever I'm doing if I go back and hit snapshot one I am back I'm ready to hear the spot I was working on which I can simply just continue on with the spacebar I'm telling you these snapshots are a lifesaver if you incorporate them into your workflow now with that in mind I want to share this is something that we've talked about way way back when we're talking about tracks but you have this Navigator option over here in your track area and truthfully how many times have you used this let me show you how beautiful this thing is and then combine it with the snapshots when I first started working with wavelab coming from Cubase that was a you know pretty in-depth Cubase user before I even got into wavelab and the first thing I started to do in wavelab was to try to do the things I would do in Cubase for example if I had a clip in Cubase like this and I wanted to move the whole screen around if I grab my mouse and hit the mouse wheel or whatever I could grab this and I could just move things around can't do that in wavelab if you have tracks off the screen and you want to just bring things right back into view there's nothing to grab there's no way to spin it back in you have to actually go over into the track area hold shift to kind of move things up and down just all kinds of things that are different from maybe the way you've done things in Cubase on the other hand if you use this Navigator by simply clicking on this button and then making a quick adjustment on whatever you want the view area to be you have this basic magnifying glass that allows you to move anywhere over your total project and quickly see whatever it is you want to see if you double click in this screen it gives you the full view back again these things are like essential workflow and view options that if you try to do them any other way you'll basically be completely frustrated between using this Navigator let's take this Navigator I'm going to make a quick adjustment to the size again I want to go over to this clip here now I'm going to go over make a selection here put my cursor in the middle go up hit my camera make a snapshot I go back to my navigator which still remembers the little square that I had made I'll move that over to some other thing down here I'll make a selection on this I'll hit the letter k on my keyboard to zoom into that I'll go up hit my camera I'll make a second snapshot I'll go back to my navigator again I'll move that to something else that I need here in the middle the minute I move off the Navigator it disappears for you I'll make another selection that I need here I'll put my cursor in the middle I hit my camera I hit a snapshot and now I go back I hit snapshot one snapshot two Snapshot three it just could not be simpler in terms of getting around where you have to go one more thing to throw into the mix in case you haven't been using it but maybe you want to reconsider using some of these things up on top you have a tab that says workspace when you click workspace you have these control windows and you have four of them if I bring up control number one or control number two and each one of these windows will allow you to take something really anything you want click it and drag it onto these control windows and then you quickly you know have access to the metering that you want or whatever the shortcuts if you haven't changed them in wavelab is to hit the number one and then C number two and then C number three and then C number four and then C and it'll bring up whatever control window you want quickly I go back I hit my Snapshot one my Snapshot two or my Snapshot three I go over to my navigator I grab that I move that to where I need to go if at any point you know I need to change something I just make a change as I need to I hit my camera hit another snapshot and now that becomes the focus and probably the thing I love the most about it is not only does it remember the selection but it remembers where the cursor is and that has just got to be the most convenient thing in the world because again with wave lab once your cursor runs past the selection it'll just keep going and then you have to make another selection to bring it back if you have a snapshot in place you just hit that snapshot and the selection and the cursor come back into Focus they're just fantastic options that I would highly recommend you spend a few minutes to make them part of your workflow and things will get so much better for you if you haven't grabbed your navigation guide be sure to grab that before you go links to all the content on this channel ever growing and free to use take a minute and mess with your snapshots mess with your Navigator spend a few minutes before and after your session to make that part of your workflow I guarantee you you will enjoy the sessions much more after that all right as usual great to have you guys here I'll see you on the next video
