Mixing Down - The Render Function V1 in Wavelab Pro

hello everybody Andrew Blake from the digitalaudiomanual.com today let's talk about mixing it down with the render function in wavelab Pro but before we start I want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future I'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or Cubase plugins or the cable guys shaper Box 2 and many many other projects that are in the works then I know you're going to find just like I have that this is an invaluable study Aid and the other thing I want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple PDF this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or in anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free Okay so let's get started so we continue on through the audio Montage in wavelab where a lot of the work at least for me a lot of the work occurs of course wavelab has many features and functions in the audio montage is only one of those and of course all the videos on the audio Montage so far are in the navigation guide in the link below but now we are arriving at a section of the render function and this again is one of those key reasons why I do these videos in the first place because if you go to the manual and you look at the render function you basically get yes the render function is the render function and I would like to give you a little bit more than that so let's start art here what is rendering I remember when I first got into audio stuff with my DAW and was playing around with things in the term rendering was like what is rendering so of course rendering by now most people know is when you're mixing things down to some final result of some kind and the best I can do for you there is basically give you some examples so here's example one like I said we've been working in the audio montage and the audio Montage in wavelab Pro is basically when you're taking clips of some kind different audio pieces you know from various places you know or maybe just the one file like I have here in front of me but maybe this one file has effects on it and it's going to go through various processing and ultimately I want to be able to put this file out in the world so that somebody else can listen to it and of course they can't listen to it the way it is right now because it can only be played in wavelab Pro oh the way it is basically because there's effects going on and it's going through various channels and all kinds of things are happening to it maybe I've added metadata to it so as long as the world was filled with wavelab Pro then other people could listen to this but if I want this to be played in any other shape or form on some kind of online service or give it to a friend or who knows what I have to get this out of wave lab Pro hence rendering when I render it I render it off into a useful format that somebody else can play without any relation to wave lab after that so let's do one real quick just so we can see so I have this file that I've been working on a song that I've composed and produced and finally mastered in wavelab here in the process of mastering it I've brought the level up to the level that I want to get it to if I go to my inspector I've put a master rig on this this this master read contains an equalizer and a compressor and a saturator and a limiter and an imager all kinds of stuff that again nobody else is going to have on their system when they're listening to it so I got to get somehow I got to get that contained into this file as this file continues through the route of wavelab it's going to go into another Master rig where it's got a limiter On It ultimately capping the ceiling on it so there's no true Peak Distortion out there in the real world it continues on it goes through a dither plug-in you know dither what do we do so I'm going to take this file I'm going to go to the render Tab while I'm in the Montage I may give it a different name of some kind and then ultimately I'm going to hit this button over here that says start the rendering so I'm going to hit the render button a little graph down here at the bottom goes showing me that it's being rendered off and at the end of it it turns into another file self-contained all those plugins have now been bounced onto this file if there was any metadata it's all been mixed into this file I can go up and I can right click on the tab of this file say reveal it in the file explorer and there a file opens up and there it is right there now this file can now be taken to any number of scenarios like I said I could upload this to a streaming service of some kind I could put it on Soundcloud if I so desired I could send it through email or put it on a web page or any number of things because now this file stands alone all in its independent self has nothing to do with wavelab anymore it has become a rendered file for example if I double click on this and my system it opens up in Windows Media Player and there it is ready to go for the world that's what the rendering is all about now what are our options in wavelab we have what we just did I just rendered off this one file let me show you some of the other things that come up when you go through this process let's talk about this most of the stuff that happens with the whole rendering process has a lot to do with what happens over here in the far left under the source area if you look there's a drop down arrow and it gives a whole bunch of options in terms of what you're going to render off or how they're going to get rendered off so let's first of all look at this very first one that says the whole montage now again remember on my Montage I've only got one clip here but you could have you know 20 Clips here depending on what you're trying to do but the idea is really pretty much the same so if I have this whole montage when I render it I'm going to get the whole montage well how do I know what the whole montage is basically it's always from the very beginning which means whether there's a clip there or information there or not but from the very beginning of the Montage to the very end of the last clip clip I'll take this clip just where it's at right now and I've got the whole montage set so I'm going to hit start to render down in the lower left you see a buyer moving with progress and when it's done rendering it produces another file or at least the way I have mine set I'll show you there's ways to actually turn that up I like to have the file show up in wavelab but it is now rendered off this file all right and if you look at this file it's identical to the whole montage it starts right at the beginning basically at zero and ends at the Montage end of the clip on the other hand if we go back to our montage and let's say I take this clip and I start moving it up this way and leave all this blank space in the front here but I thought when I was going to render it that I'm just going to get this clip that's all I really wanted to do but because I have the whole montage set over here when I hit the render button and I get the progress thing down in the bottom left I am now have a clip rendered off like I did before shows the whole song but look at this big block of empty space which more than likely I didn't want to do you didn't want to do so you want to be aware that if you say the whole montage you're taking everything from the beginning of that Montage to the end of whatever clip you have then if we look at this list again and instead let's go all the way to the very bottom if you have one that says all the selected Clips I'm going to hit that guy this now solves the problem of any gaps or spaces if I just select the thing and hit my render button I come up with a perfect render from start to finish with no gaps or spaces so this is really a good option unless back in the Montage we have 20 Clips maybe we don't want to select 20 Clips or maybe we got 20 out of 40 that we want we don't want to select the 20 out of 40. so again it's like you have to make your decisions but when it comes to One Clip I'll select eclipse is a great idea then you have this option in this list selected audio range if we click on that and then we make a little selection of some kind and we go back and we hit our render then we wind up with a small little piece out of our song this is great if you need 15 seconds or 30 seconds or something or maybe you want to bounce a verse or a chorus or an intro whatever you need you can pick some little section some little piece and then just bounce just what you need all right so that'll do it for today as usual if you haven't grabbed your navigation guide be sure to grab that before you go from the link below there's links to all the content on this channel we want to be able to keep up with all the stuff that's happening every week so the render feature we'll probably come back there's a few more things to talk about with that you know we'll get into a few more examples of some of the things you can do but you know go render something that's what I would say you'd be surprised how even if you don't have something done if you render it off to a final product and then sit back and look at it and go you know what would it take to finish this you might find yourself finishing it and finishing it is the name of the game all right as usual great to have you guys here see you on the next video
