today we talk about

MediaBay and Media Rack V8 final  in Cubase 12

hello everybody Andrew Blake from the digitalaudiomanual.com today we wrap up a series of videos on the media Bay and media Rack in Cubase 12. but before we start I want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future I'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wave lab or Cubase plugins or the cable guys shaper Box 2 and many many other projects that are in the works then I know you're going to find just like I have that this is an invaluable study Aid and the other thing I want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple PDF this is a constantly updated page that has any info information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free Okay so let's get started all right so this is it brace yourself we have arrived at the finish line we have a few bits of information to acclimate here and then we can tie this one up with a bow and say we now our media Bay Masters we are now going to start out with the attribute inspector anytime you click on a file in your results once you've scored some results in this media Bay over on the right you're going to see this thing called the attribute inspector that's assuming you have this right Zone open if you don't you go up and click the right Zone to open it up again this is another thing that's different from the media rack that we began this discussion with there's no attribute inspector in the media rack these values that are in this attribute inspector can be changed updated you can add them how you want you know change them to different values the whole point of this is to help you find your files quicker if you have a list of files you know and and you have a certain category or they're under drum files if you're looking for drums and more specifically maybe a snare drum or vocal parts that have a certain character character whatever this is your chance to organize and you know straighten those things out so that you can find them when you need them when you look at this window there's a couple of tabs up here you have one that says Dynamic and one that says defined and each one of them you have subcategories that kind of break things down like here it shows media and musical categories up here on these tabs when you go to this Dynamic one you're getting everything whatever's available you're seeing it on the other hand when you move over to the Define it breaks down to what you think is important and you choose what you think is important by going to this little Cog thing here that gives you the configure to find attributes and you click on that and you actually can check what's visible or not clicking it again hides it back any changes when you start changing these attributes it becomes a permanent part of the file Unless somehow you've got your files right protected and some things you can't change in the media Bay you can't change the file format or a file size most the time changing an attribute is as simple as clicking on it for example let me go up to this one that says the family name raw ambience and it gives me a quick list of other options but at the bottom it even says more and if I hit more I then get a screen with everything in it which I can search if I need to or I can scroll down this long long list of stuff and find what I want and simply pick something else if I need to we've kind of talked about this before but when it comes to the rating option it's simply a matter of clicking in the field and then you can drag to add these little stars you can add up to five stars from none to five when you get down to the character option this one says minor acoustic process gives you a whole bunch of stuff but if I click on this one you get this screen with these little radio buttons as I go down the list the one on the right that says minor that one is defined so now as I look down the list I can see minor here as I go down further on the list on the left it has acoustic so then on the results I see acoustic and it just keeps going like that until you get all the attributes in there that you want in your defined list if you want to get rid of an attribute quick you can just right click on it you have an option that says remove the attribute and just take it out like that you can actually do editing right in this results list if you go up to the little down arrow and go down it says allow editing in the results list you can choose that and we've talked about that which allows you to pick a result and you know edit it not every attribute is is there to be edited but the ones that you can you can just change them then write in the results list the nice thing about this is you can actually select multiple files and let's say I want to give these all five stars just like that no big deal you can also select multiple files and then go to your attribute inspector and you can make a change to all those files just clicking on whatever thing you want to adjust make your adjustment and it will apply to all of those files if it's a large group of files it may take a minute to do it all but you can do them in multiple files if you need to like we said things that are right I protected you may not be able to change and if you look in your results list and you slide it all the way there's a column that with a little padlock on it and it shows if something is right protected with a check I've got this on Factory content so it's showing that so just because something is write protected doesn't mean you can't add attributes to it and you know organize it like your other stuff the difference is though it won't write it to a permanent thing on your file or in your disk it's saved in the media Bay database file itself so that means if you ever eliminate your change your preferences of some kind you'll lose that information it's only kind of a half temporary save when you try to change an attribute or do change an attribute when something's write protected you get a little pending tags thing that shows up here and again it takes very little to get rid of it because if you rescan the disk this will go away and your tag will be lost the only way you can permanently rewrite something that's been right protected is remove the right protection so again we said the dynamic tag over here shows you all the attributes whereas that's defined shows things that you've chosen which are determined by this configure the defined attributes button here let's take a little deeper look at this for a minute so this attribute inspector again shows all these different kind of attributes you can select but it is determined by this filter right above it which is similar to what we've seen before if we get this drop down we get this filter for audio or midi or midi Loops or whatever so again it shows you for whatever you've chosen it shows you all the different ones that are available for that specific one some of these are checked some of these aren't if you select more than one let's say I have video files and I go up and I select midi loops with it once you check these you want to just click somewhere off in the media Bay to get it locked in but now it introduces check marks that are orange as well as the White and the orange ones are saying yeah that's an attribute for both of them but they're different and then when you finish making your choices on what you want to see go back up hit this defined attribute button again and then probably the nicest feature of this whole thing in my opinion is you can actually create your own attributes if I go to Define again and hit the Define button again there's a little plus and minus up here if I hit this plus button I get a screen to add a user attribute at that point I can go down to the type it can be a text a number or yes or no I give it some kind of name of what I want it to be hit OK and now that attribute is going to be added into this list of other options and I can choose it for my files all right so there's a couple of kinds of media we haven't looked at yet one being track presets let's look at those real quick first of all I have this little snippet of audio here dry just a dry vocal open the media Bay with F5 and I'll go to my media types make sure that track presets is selected hit the upper area here and we can see there's not a whole lot of them there's a few here from the factory content on these track presets unlike some of the other ones there's no previewer that comes in on the bottom so you're kind of like you know take your best shot with these unless they have an instrument assigned to them like this particular one does so I could use that but these other ones are strictly audio but what you can do with these audio ones if I take this kind of move it over a little bit so if I have my track playing here and I'll select one of these and I can drag it onto the existing track now if I drag it below it puts a green bar below the track and it will create its own track but if I move it on to the track itself it moves the Green Arrow kind of right in the middle of the track and if I drop that that adds it to the track [Music] which sounds very good if we open up that channel we can see it's added to all of these variation customizations to this track eq'd it added a whole bunch of inserts some of these only work on audio files some of them will work on midi files this group of media things seems to work out really good you have an option here for effects chain presets those seem to work on audio and midi I'm going to leave that on there for a minute I went to The Logical search and I put in vocal got a whole list of available vocal effects chains same thing as before I can take that and drag it onto the vocal track here until the Green Arrow stays in the middle [Music] really nice really nice effect on that one when we open it up we can see that they uh put a whole bunch of stuff in here Studio chorus reverence ping pong delay vintage compressor that fills just this insert section here let's move on and try these strip presets see what we get with this I'm going to go down to this one that says female electronic take that and drag it over again if it doesn't show you a green arrow on the middle it can't apply but this one does all right so that one applied it didn't put any inserts in but it put the channel strip and the EQ so there you go when you add the strip resets you're going to get that you're going to get the eqs and the presets on the Strip itself and when you add the effects chain you're going to get the inserts so definitely a world of stuff to investigate in terms of being able to customize channels so that pretty much covers all those we've looked at all these different ones the audio the MIDI files the midi Loops pattern Banks we talked about track presets plug-in presets effects chains now on the strips and video files well you know what video files are and then we talked about projects early on so that covers all the different kinds of media files so the only part of the media Bay left to discuss is the subject of working with volume databases so let's kind of go through that so this whole volume database thing is kind of more along the lines of for someone that kind of needs to move their media files around let's say someone is working at home and in a studio and they need to take certain media files with it maybe sound effects and that kind of thing so they may have to create some kind of database to be able to move back and forth based on stuff that may have come off this computer to begin with but you want to have the freedom to move it around we want to just mention before we get into this if you make these volume databases whenever you start Cubase Cubase automatically scans and sees these kind of things but if you were to like add it on the Fly while your program is running you would have to manually scan that I'm not going to actually do it because it takes a certain amount of time to do something like this but the idea is you have to go to let's say I have a disk here this e-disc and I want to create a database out of what I have on this e-disc if I right click on it and I go to the very bottom it has an option that says create volume database when I do that it's going to scan the disk and it's going to take all the information and basically make a copy of it with a special kind of icon looks like a couple of disks on top of each other at that point I could take that particular database put it to an external drive and move it around if I needed to and then pretty much just the opposite if you have one of those kind of databases you've created and you want to just get rid of it and reintegrate it back in you have the option just to basically right click on it and you'll get an option when you're over that database to basically say remove the volume database at that point all the metadata is integrated back into the media Bay and the database is just deleted and that ladies and gentlemen wraps up all the information available in the manual on the media Bay and the media wreck congratulations give yourself a hand you did great you all come to the front of the class as usual if you haven't grabbed your navigation guide be sure to grab it of course all the links to all this content ever growing free to use and this was a Whopper ain't no doubt about that you guys ought to be any of you that have gone through this whole series of what eight videos here you got to Pat yourselves on the back if I could award gold stars I would be passing them out you are all well on your way to becoming real experts there's not going to be any information gaps in your knowledge I can pretty much guarantee you that as we continue down this road [Music] all I can tell you is it's a joy we are we are creating a Cubase Army here of knowledgeable producers welcome to the club all right you guys and gals everybody that's out there listening it's great to have you here I'll see you on the next video
