today we talk about

MediaBay and Media Rack V6  in Cubase 12

hello everybody Andrew Blake from the digitalaudiomanual.com today we move on to our sixth video as we continue to discuss the media Bay and media Rack in Cubase 12. but before we start I want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future I'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or Cubase plugins or the cable guys shaper Box 2 and many many other projects that are in the works then I know you're going to find just like I have that this is an invaluable study Aid and the other thing I want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple PDF this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free Okay so let's get started okay so we're on the sixth video into what is appearing to be a quite vast subject of this media Bay and media rack all the previous videos are in the link to the navigation guide below but today we're going to lead off with previewing some of these midi presets and things that are available I'm going to close this media Bay down and I'm going to hit my F5 key to open it back up and over on the left in the file browser area I'm going to choose this particular folder that says VST sounds I'm going to click on that and I have a huge amount of results over here so I'm going to filter some of those out so I'm going up to this media type screen hit that hit the top one that clears them all out I'm going to go down to the option that says track presets click that go back up to the main title click it and now I have a long list of what's available as track presets on my system what we're going to discover here is that we can audition these before we actually start bringing them into the project so if I click on one it opens up a previewer down here in the bottom which allows me to basically perform what's on the sound so I can hear it and see if it's something I really want so let's do a quick tour of what we're looking at and then we'll use it from the left we have a play and we have a stop button we have a thing that says memo recorder if we hit this down arrow we also have the option to load a midi file we have a light in the middle here that shows any midi activity so if I play on a midi keyboard we have something to change the volume you can use your mouse wheel to turn it up and down but always check the volume carefully we have this thing down here that represents the keys on your either your computer keyboard or it could be a midi keyboard even though you won't see it but you can also change the picture if you go to This Little Dot and click on it changes it to a picture of a keyboard you have various ways to adjust the octave but we'll get into that in a minute and then you have a button over here that turns on or off the ability to use your computer keyboard to preview now I always have a keyboard actually physically hooked up to my system you know a regular piano midi keyboard and that always overrides everything I can always hit a key on that and no matter what I've set up here whether it's computer keyboard on or off whatever the midi keyboard always overrides it if you have MIDI files stored on your computer you have the option to hit this drop down menu and choose load midi file which will open up a browser on your system you can click on that midi file and that midi file will play the synth patch but they've also given us another option to make things real easy when you preview if you hit the drop down and you go to the memo recorder in order to use this memo recorder you'll want to hit this play button and then play something and don't pause more than two seconds I'm going to play a string of notes and I'm going to wait as I'm waiting it eventually starts foreign and now that's playing on its own I'm not playing it any longer as that memo recorder is playing I can also play other patches [Music] and it will continue the memo recorder I don't have to Play It Again it also allows you to use your computer keyboard so if I click on these it's mimicking my computer keyboard now normally when I hit uh ert5 or any of these other things it will enact you know various commands on Cubase itself but if I hit this button over here that says computer keyboard input I'm now going to hit those keys on my actual keyboard of my computer they light up and they no longer affect Cubase they only affect this MIDI controller when I'm done I would push that button to turn it off all right so let's look at pattern Banks and the pattern bank previewer and what that is all about if we go back up to our media types and we select pattern Banks which is down the list there three or four ways go back and hit the title and I'm going to shift over here in the file browser to the factory content and we now have a list of pattern Banks and the big question begins what is a pattern Bank well let's talk about it for a minute I'm going to click on this first one Afric Latino and below the pattern Banks previewer begins to play that's because I have the auto play on and as you can hear it's playing a drum beat and if we look at this there's numbers one two three four these Stamper Banks and then below it has little keys and each one of these keys are like a variation in the pattern like if I hit this foreign or whatever and I can go over here and hit stop so before we look at this too in depth let's talk about what the heck is this pattern bank and what's it referring to and where are these drum sounds coming from as with just about everything in the media Bay you can once you find something you like you can either drag it or click on it in some way let's double click on this first preset we have now I'm going to go ahead and close this media Bay down to get it out the window it has now created a track over here on my song and if I play my song that pattern that we just heard a second ago plays along with it so what is this and what is it doing let's go ahead and go to the track and hit this edit instrument button and we can see that what it is has something to do with a Groove agent because it's opened up a Groove agent but if you know anything about Groove agent you'll notice that when we're looking at the patterns which usually make those kind of sounds that we just heard there's no patterns here so how in the heck is it playing patterns if there's no patterns now if we go over to the instruments there's a whole bunch of instruments great instrument sounds but what is triggering these and how is this happening so let's continue our search let's close Groove agent and let's examine this track a little bit deeper if we look at this track and we go over to the inspector and we kind of look around I notice here on the midi inserts that one's lit up so I'm going to hit the midi inserts and lo and behold the answer to our question there's an insert here called the beat designer now if I hit this e I'm going to open it up so what is happening is we have a Groove agent loaded with some great sounds and we have a midi insert called the beat designer playing those great sounds now if I play this song again all those things we just saw in the media Bay those four Banks and those separate keys for the variations all that stuff is the same thing we just had over in the media Bay but now we see basically where it's coming from so what they've done with these pattern Banks is they've created various drum patterns in the beat designer attach them to various Groove agents loaded with some great sounds and then saved these things as presets and these presets which are known as pattern Banks show up in the media Bay now before we go back to the media Bay and have a look at this let's just have a look at the B designer now I can tell you I don't use the beat designer much that's not my thing I'm a drum editor person but the beat designer obviously is a great piece of equipment and maybe at some point I will um do a video on it exploring all these various things because there's a lot of stuff and variation in ways to flams and all kinds of stuff in here but again I'm more of the drum editor and of course if you haven't seen them I have tons of videos on the drum editor feel free to check those out from the navigation guide below but the beauty of this beat designer as it is even right now now it's loaded with these kits these sounds which I can play I can still take these keys and notes from this B designer click them and drag them right down into my project and then have MIDI files in my project take this key I can drag it down here and literally I can fill in my project with the keys right off this beat designer so even though I don't use the beat designer I can take full use of the midi parts that have been created by someone that obviously knows what they're doing creating Beats and I can put them into my project and then because like I said I'm a drum editor kind of person I can take these kits and then I can open them up into the drum editor and I can continue to work on them and edit them whatever way I want so even though they've been created in the beat designer I have the best of both worlds because I can totally access what they've created here and I can still use it in my drum editor for example now that I've dragged these down there I have this so it opens up quite a world of percussion so going back to our media Bay and examining now what they've given us with this set of pattern Banks and all these pattern banks that they have built here we can easily preview these simply by clicking on them and again I can audition them by hitting the different keys I get the variations if I like something you know I can get I can double click it and take it right into my project but not only that I can use my down arrow on my computer keyboard and very quickly preview through these different patterns looking for something that I like so basically a world of percussion and drum inspiration is just waiting here to be examined and played with all right there you go whole world of stuff to explore in this media Bay and media rack as usual if you haven't grabbed the navigation guide be sure to grab that before you go that is your ticket to all the content on this channel which is ever growing and free to use and it's designed to make your luring experience easy as possible everything is in order you see things as they're added things are in numbered sequence and for example this series that we're working on here with the media Bay we're up to the sixth video on this thing so when you go looking for it it shows you media Bay one media Bay 2 media Bay 3 you can just media pay yourself into Oblivion foreign so what we kind of covered today we went through you know the previewer for the VST presets proving some of the presets using MIDI files or the memo recorder playing some of the presets using a computer keyboard and then ultimately we kind of ended up today looking at this pattern Banks previewer so so quite a few things to play with and explore as always great to have you guys here it's the meaning of what this is all about I'll see you in the next video
