today we talk about

MediaBay and Media Rack V5  in Cubase 12

hello everybody andrew blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move on to our fifth video as we continue to examine the media bay and the media rack in cubase 12. but before we start i want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future i'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or cubase plug-ins or the cable guys shaperbox2 and many many other projects that are in the works then i know you're going to find just like i have that this is an invaluable study aid and the other thing i want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple pdf this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free okay so let's get started so we're on the fifth video now way into this subject and all the previous videos in the navigation guide and the link below but let's lead off this discussion talking about the different media types in this selector meaning when you go up to the top of the media bay which we've been looking at here to get to the media bay press f5 typically so you hit this media selector and of course if you hit the all media type everything goes away and if you hit the all media type everything comes back so that's your quick shortcut to get in and out of this if you turn them all off and then let's say i want to go to track presets i click that you want to go back up and hit the media type selector here and then it will put the filter into effect so basically you know these are fairly obvious all the different kinds of you know audio files midi files midi loops and we're going to look at some searches on these later on but one i want to call your attention to that is probably not noticed but is really a great option if i turn all these off is at the bottom we have an option for projects and you will find if you do a search in your projects let me go back to the heading a couple of things come up that you might not see in the regular ways you look in the hub or other ways you look for your projects one of the things is you have the date modified column which you can hit to show the oldest one you have here or from the newest and you can then scan through these you know your latest projects you can see where they are maybe you have some on some hard drives that you haven't backed up yet so all in all a very very good option in terms of organizing and looking at your projects so i would definitely encourage you to investigate that option so then we talked about the ratings let me just show you something interesting with the ratings i'm going to put in a couple of five star ratings a couple of two star ratings a couple of one star ratings couple of three star ratings now if i go up to the ratings drop down and i select that and i go even just to the one star rating it shows everything that is rated one star and above so you always get everything above even what you've chosen so we get three stars and five stars nothing below the rating but everything above another thing that's really cool is if you hit the one star rating any ratings actually but the one starting and then you hit the rating column you can sort it from the lowest ratings to the highest or hit the rating column again and sort it from the highest to the lowest very functional so we have a text search we've done this many times like if i put in the word snare it's going to look for all the snares we want to mention that this text search also has our old friend the boolean search which if you've ever looked at any of my project logical editor videos you know we've gone into that way deep but for example let me show you a couple of more sophisticated type searches so let's say i want a tambourine i'm going to write tam t a and b and let's say i want loop l o o p all right so tam loop with the blee and search i could write tam and loop which means i have to have those words but the search is already set by default to do and searches so if i write tam and loop it's already doing tam and loop i don't have to put the word and in there we can use or by typing the word or we can also just hit a little comma and that'll give us tambourine or loop you can type in the word not like tambourine not loop to exclude one or you can hit the little minus sign you can go super fancy using parentheses i put a parenthesis around tambourine and loop and then i put a plus sign and said drum so it has to have drum in it and it can have either tambourine or loop in it you can get real specific with groups of words using quotation marks quotation marks being the two little marks that come before or after so i put quotation mark tam loop quotation mark and that brought me back exactly two results that have to have the word tam loop in them and you want to use these quotation marks when you have a word with a hyphen in it because the hyphen would be treated as not and when you've gotten carried away doing text search and media types and everything else ratings everything you can always just hit this reset to reset all the filters and everything goes back so let's talk a little bit more about this preview section it does kind of change depending on what you're trying to preview and it has no ability to preview video and it has no ability to preview project files but what it can preview is pretty good so starting with transport controls got play stop pause and then you have an auto cycle one that keeps going around around the all-important volume control again always pay attention to that so you don't hurt your ears you have this first button over here on the right to auto play your new results if you don't have that pushed you know you have to actually play or hit the play button to hear things but if you have this button selected you can just pick your file and then you get an audition automatically this next button down here aligns it to the beats in the project this particular loop that's playing if you look in the attributes it's at 84 beats and my project is way up at 128. so if this loop is playing and i enact this beats the project it's going to really speed up and it will change as my tempo and my project changes this last button on the right sets it up to start and stop with the project so if i hit that then i start my project then the loop plays and when i stop my project the loop stops so here's a little hidden gem that you may or may not have known about if you turn off the align beats to project then a little gray bar kind of appears above your loop which at that point a pencil appears and you can actually draw a section you can just grab it and drag it right down into the project itself in our media types if we switch this to media files and look at what choices we have in that option you will notice if you click on the results that you don't hear anything typically down here on the bottom you'll see a little graph moving along but you don't hear anything because unless you assign these midi patterns into a synth in this case i have a piano loaded as a vsd synth if i go over here there's a little drop down right now says not connected if i click on that it shows what instruments i have available and i fight my midi piano right here now i can hear it and same thing you have a volume control and you have something to align it to the beats to the project and over on the left you have a start and a stop all right so the last thing we'll talk about today the midi loops if you look into this display here and you check the thing that says midi loops midi loops are just like the midi files except for they have usually some kind of synth associated with them usually with cubase i've noticed it's mostly haley and they've got hooked up so when you click on one of these guys it plays you know a synthesizer whatever it's hooked up to but it connected with that midi pattern whatever they've got in there now these always play in time with whatever the project is but you do have a starting to stop and you have this auto play same as before volume but what you have that's really interesting on these is you have this last button that allows it to follow a chord track so in my project i have a chord track but right now it's not the button's not active so it's not going to follow the chord drag it's out of tune it's all over the place on the other hand if i hit this follow the chord track and it doesn't work all the time but it works pretty good when i hit this thing and it kind of lights up now when i play my track it does a pretty good guess at getting it right which makes auditioning through these midi loops a lot more enjoyable for sure all right so that wraps it up for this one as always if you haven't grabbed your navigation guide be sure to grab that before you go there's links to all the content on the channel ever growing free to use and all the videos typically are listed one two three four so you can find them without too much effort much much better than looking through the playlist i can tell you that as we keep moving along on this media bay and media rack this is a big one i have to admit the subject is quite vast but not without reward there's definitely some gems in here to be found some things you probably won't use every day but some things you may find yourself going i didn't even know that was there and then next thing you know that'll be in your next project which in my opinion is kind of the point of what we're all doing here as usual great to have you guys here i'll see you in the next video
