MediaBay and Media Rack V1 in Cubase 12

hello everybody andrew blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we begin a series of videos on the media bay and media rack in cubase 12. but before we start i want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future i'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or cubase plugins or the cableguys shaperbox2 and many many other projects that are in the works then i know you're going to find just like i have that this is an invaluable study aid and the other thing i want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple pdf this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free okay so let's get started so the media big what is it it's something that brings really all the little bits of media that's on your computer so you can bring them into your projects there was a time in the far distant past when there was no such thing as a media bay i remember when cubase first introduced this concept and it was so new and revolutionary to have some kind of window that brought in all the different you know elements your loops and your bits of audio and whatever else you had under one screen so that you could bring it into your project easily when you set up the media bayer when you begin to use it there's actually a beginning or an initial scan that kind of occurs and we're going to go through all that what we're looking at right here is this media bay window which we're going to access in a minute but they also have this media rack over on the right hand side if you hit this tab there's a thing that says media and you have kind of same thing looks different has different functions in order to see this media rack over on the right you have to activate this right zone view up in your project and then once you actually get to this media rack this opens up on what's called the home page on this home page you have various tiles which basically you can click and that will take you to specific destinations and these tiles are broken down into bst instruments vst effects loops and samples presets user presets the file browser and favorites in this favorites one at the bottom you can actually then add your own specific favorite folders that you want to use to get started on this you have a little button at the top left where you click to add favorites and then you have these favorites like i've set up here that you can get to certain destinations if you want to get rid of these there's a little x up in the upper right to click and close them down there's a couple of ways of navigating into this they have a results page at the very top you have the search option and to the right there's a show all results if you click on that it kind of changes more into a file type of browser which contains at the very top various kinds of navigation controls a little button on the far right that brings up the attributes where you can like type in you know in this case it shows you know guitar or instruments you want to pick out below that it actually brings up the results of what comes up when you do any kind of searching and then at the very bottom if you click on any of these files it opens up this preview thing at the bottom where it allows you to hear the file so as you're looking at all these tiles there's one down here that says file browser and this is the one that pretty much is gonna you know look at everything you have in your computer so let's click on that guy file browser as you go through these different folders available to you on your computer you have up on top different navigation controls if you want to go back to the home as you move down you have a little button to add favorites and some arrows to move up and down through the files you also have a search at the top if you put in something at the top and you haven't done a search yet it makes take some time so be aware of that whatever folder you click on as you go down here you'll see the results show up in this area below that and then ultimately if you find again like we said before if you find something you want to hear and you click on it you'll get an audition in this previewer area down below this says file browser up on top if we go back and hit either this back arrow or this home it brings us back to our tiles again then let's go to this tile that says vst instruments click on that guy and now it lists all your various vst instruments as you move down this you have an expand or collapse all which is really good to have because if you have a lot of instruments you may want to open them all up or shut them all down on the far right you have an option to actually show the pictures or hide the pictures you have this plug-in collection options in terms of what shows up and you haven't you can build by vendor or category the default list and you can set all that stuff up in this last option this is the plugin manager when you click that you actually get a window that allows you to do some configuration of what you want to see and then finally at the bottom this is the plug-in list which shows all your vst instruments going back up to the top hitting a little home button then we have an option that says vst effects we can click on that guy and now we have a list of all the possible effects we have with the same kind of things you have expand all collapse all and then you have the option to show the pictures if you want to see the pictures of the plugins again you have this plugin options list showed by vendor category and it opens up that plugin manager again and in that plugin manager it's the same list every time but it has different tabs and you have a tab for the vst effects you have this various ways of navigating around up here you have this first one that shows all the different types of media that you can pick you want audio files media files whatever you want to kind of refine it down to you have an interesting option next to that that allows you to shuffle the results so normally whatever results come up you know they come up alphabetically in the list down here but if you wanted something different or variation you can start hitting the shuffle button and it will keep making different shuffles you can then go back and hit the name to put it back in order again you can also just hit this reset attribute filter and it puts it back in order as well you have these columns showing the different ways to filter stuff and if you want to get into customizing that you have a little gear that sets up the results and there's just a huge amount of options in terms of what you can pick to look for the possibilities and this last button on the end it takes the filters in or out in terms of what you can see once you have these results and you've previewed something you know and you like it there's various ways to bring this into the project you can drag it click on it we're going to go through some of those all right so let's use this media bay and bring some things into the project we're going to start with the vst instruments i'm going to click on that guy and of course we have all these different instruments here let's stay with simple ones that apply right to cubase if i'm going to go to the hallian sonic se that's in every version of cubase click on that guy and it gives me some of the packs which is great i love this that it actually you know organizes them that way let's go ahead and go to this flux option you can just basically click on things and it will load them into this player area in the bottom and you can click on keys to audition the sounds if you find something you like you can then grab it there's lots of ways to do it actually but one way to take it is grab it and just drag it over into the project let go of it and there and now it's in the project ready to be played you can actually overwrite existing synths that you have in here like if i take that same one that's that sound it's called ashes in the dark and i'm gonna go over here and hit brave chant now sounds like this and if i take the brave chant and i drag it over into the project left area the inspector and let go of it in this upper area not down by the tabs on the upper area here it will actually overwrite the preset in there and now this preset is on that synth all right let's back out of this and let's go to the one that says vst effects a couple of ways to access these first ways to actually create an effects channel if you don't already have one in your project open the track up and then decide you want it to be an insert or a send let's take this compressor if i drag it over into the inserts and let go there it becomes an insert if i take it and drag it to the sends now it becomes a sound effect you can also open up the mixer and do the same thing you can click and drag it to an an insert or a send back out of this again you can go to the one that says presets click on that guy you have all kinds of options for presets let's go to track presets and really you just have choices whatever you want you want an audio preset vst a midi or a sampler let's go ahead and hit the sampler option let's pick a preset out of the sampler option again i can just click it to preview it if i want and then just like what i did with helgen i can either take it and drag it right on to the project itself which then opens it up as a track onto itself or same thing as before i can take it and drag it onto the inspector area it will overwrite with a new preset backing out again hitting the home button let's go down to favorites is that you have the option to put your own favorite folders here once you've gained access to this go up to the little star button click on it and then you can just navigate to whatever you have on your hard drive that you want to make a favorite shortcut select it and then it now puts a shortcut right here on the desktop for you to get to quick you have a second option for the favorites if i go to the file browser and i just look down through my list of folders if i click on a folder there's a little star right there as well that i can click and add to the favorites if it's something that's already added like i have this splice folder is one of my favorites there's no star to be added because it's already in there all right there you go i'll wrap it up for today as we start to dig into the media bay and the media rack that's definitely another powerful feature in cubase allowing us to do so much in helping to organize you know all your media files in one central place great idea as always if you haven't grabbed your navigation guide be sure to grab that before you go links to all the content on the channel ever growing free to use great resource for learning a great resource for reviewing later when you forget things and you need to refresh so begin investigating the media rack and we will continue to get into it layer by layer as usual it's great to have you guys here we'll see on the next video
