today we talk about

Fades in Audio Montages in Wavelab Pro

hello everybody andrew blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's talk about fades and crossfades in the audio montage but before we start i want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future i'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or cubase plug-ins or the cable guys shaperbox 2 and many many other projects that are in the works then i know you're going to find just like i have that this is an invaluable study aid and the other thing i want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple pdf this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free okay so let's get started all right so we have some new stuff we have some review stuff so let's just kind of quickly go through what the basic fade in fade out concept is when you look at a clip you have the little uh node points here you can make a fade in you can make a fade out all right if you select a whole bunch of clips by holding ctrl and shift you can hold alt and make fade ins and fade outs on any given clip the ability to have a free motion on these uh fade in and paid outs if you hold the control you can move them up down whichever way you want you can always right click on the envelope and reset them when it comes to uh kind of automating or being quick about the whole fade in and fade out and i do this all the time and it's really a good option to remember you go to the fade tab and again you have a fade in you have a fade out button when you click the fade in you can go over here and set you know a specific time whatever you want and when you hit fade in it will apply that preset fade in time if i go to that same clip and i go over to the tab that says fade out and then i hit the apply fade time it'll then create this default fade out and this kind of stays locked in place every time you open up wavelab so if you want to change it you know change it but it's always the same like i usually have a two second fade out here and every song i bring into wavelab i can just quickly hit fade out and apply the fade time and it's just you know real quick anytime you click one of these fade in or fade outs immediately there's a little info screen that pops up on top and you can see you know what the time is like this one shows uh two seconds and whatever so i know when i'm moving at what i've got you actually have menus on the fade in and fade out points if you go to one of those points and right click you'll get a menu with various options and the first one is a zoom to that range which is a great option a pretty cool specific option on these fades again if i right click on the fade i have the option to copy it you know but then if i want to paste it when i go back to a point whatever it is i can paste it but they also put in a special option that says paste the shape only and what that means is let's say on this particular fade in i've got a long fade in like this and maybe the fade in the actual fade in when i put it on there would be like a really short little fade in you know closer to the clip if i do the paste the shape only it will keep intact this actual length of the fade and just change the shape of the fade that i want to put there your paste of the fades can also apply to multiple clips if you do the one that says paste to the selected clips you can do more than one clip at once when you right click on these fade in fade outs and you go down here you have the actual shapes and as you change these shapes the fade in will change in shape as well all right so let's talk in a little more detail about the whole subject of default fade curve settings so when you look at any uh clip and you look at the either the fade in or the fade out the initial factory type of fade is always this straight linear envelope as opposed to these you know other shapes that it could be so if you want it to be one of these other fade in type curves let's take this one for example and you want that to be you know the curve that gets used all the time anytime you do a fade in or rather in this case fade out set it to what you want it then go up to the preset option and the fade tab on the preset options there hit preset and say save this as the current default for automatic fade outs and you click on that it's giving you are you sure yeah yeah sure so now anytime i make a fade out it'll look like that you know that kind of curve instead of the straight linear one now these are only saved in the montage so anytime i open up a different montage now it's going to go back to the linear fade outs also these buttons right below the presets that say one says apply the default so anytime i hit that now it's going to use that particular curve and the particular amount of curve and right below it has a clear which will take it back out again but now this particular curve is the default you know fade out on this in this montage that we're doing and that's important because now if you go up to the options area and hit options and it says you have these couple of options here but one says create a default phase in the new clips if i check that anytime i create a new clip like if i go to this and i make some duplicates any of these clips i've made now have this fade out automatically added to them and this applies to anything you drag into the montage so if you're making an album of some kind maybe you got 12 songs and each one of them you're going to put you know some kind of fade at the end in this case this default fade as you drag these into the montage it will automatically put that fade out on there or fade in if you want to make it that way and it just saves you all that extra work notice on this clip as i you see the fade out here this curve as i start shrinking the size of the clip the fade out kind of gets squished and eventually gets overwritten as i change this it if maybe you want that maybe you don't but there's an option also in the fades at the options area if you open this and it says lock the fade times and when you hit that now when i change the length on this clip that fade stays exactly the same no matter what and then the last thing is if you make some kind of fade of any kind and you make changes to it maybe you change the you know curve or any of these number of things and then when you do uh cross phase or stuff like that you don't want this to be changed with your automatic settings up here on the fade tab there's a clip options and you have automatic changes if you uncheck that these uh fades will just stay in place all right so before we go today i want to just give you some shortcuts that keep coming up i know as i'm going through this and they're really great to know and you may know most of them but maybe there's a few that you don't know um so let me just run through these real quick because they'll just really help out your workflow a lot if you make a selection you can make your selection and hit the k key on your keyboard and that zooms to that selection you can always hit your control and your down arrow to come back out and zoom full you can hit a clip and then hit z and then hit c in order and it zooms to the size of the clip by the same token if you do that selection where you hit like you know make a selection then hit k and you don't want to zoom out full you can go back and hit the z and the c and zoom back to that selection of the clip while you're on a clip or you know any number of different ways zooming through clips if you hold ctrl and the page up or the page down it will take you to the clip edges what's good about that is then at the clip edges you can use your up or down arrows to quickly zoom in or out to the end of the clip or beginning of the clip depending on where you're at you use your right and left arrows kind of like scrolling you know back and forth through the clip and if you want to move faster use your page up or down and that will move you faster you can even hold that and that will move really quick and then you can hit escape to uh ever we remove a selection if you have something now those assume that you you know haven't made your own shortcuts that have overwritten those those are wavelab default ones but those uh you know five six seven uh shortcuts are just really great to have under your belt so what i'm going to do is put that list of shortcuts in the navigation guide and of course it'll probably grow over time with other shortcuts and i'll make a specific section called shortcuts you could probably print it out or whatever works for you but just want to organize shortcuts because they're so valuable to you know be able to know the really good ones and get to them quick which as usual brings us to make sure you have the navigation guide if you don't have it so you can take advantage of this kind of stuff and all the other content being added all the time and keep you up on everything that's happening all the latest information glad you guys are here it's fun to share this stuff we'll see you on the next video
