Editing Tempo and Time Signature V7 final in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our seventh video as we continue todiscuss editing Tempo and time signaturein Cubase but before we start I want toremind you that there's a link below tothe free content navigation guide whichis an easy to navigate webpage withlinks to all the content on this channeland besides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper Box 2 and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on the seventhvideo of this discussion of tempo andtime signature all the previous videosare in the navigation guide in the linkbelow but let's start out today lookingat the warp tool and what options thisgives us if we go up on our toolbar hasa couple of little lines on it this isthe time warp tool if I click on thatcouple of things change the actualmeasures change color and the tool Ihave here turns into kind of like alittle clock with an arrow over the topand this is our warping tool now if wego back up to the toolbar and hit itagain we see that we have three optionson this tool we have this warp grid wehave another one that says warp grid butmusical events follow and then we haveone that says free warp if we're usingthe warp grid the very first option Ifind this to be somewhat useful if youhave to do things like this where I havethis click counting on this piece ofaudioand the clicks aren't matching at all sowith the warp grid I can basically justtake the actual vertical lines that goup and down on the measures and on thebeats and I can click on them back andforth until I get it to line right up onclicks like this I'm going to go to thisnext quarter note I'm going to grab itmove it to this next click go to thisnext quarter note grab it move it tothis next clickand maybe grab this last one and movethis onto the click and I'm going tograb my measure and make that startright at the beat that I want it tostart in now when I play thisthe clicks now line up with the clicksso with the Warped grid you're able tojust actually move the actual gridaround with this tool so moving on if wehit this warp tool again and we move tothe second option it says warp gridmusical events follow so what happens inthis case now as I stretch things outthe whole song will stretch with it forexample if I click here and then I clickover here and I play this songforeign[Music]the whole song stretches[Music]and then if we go to the last one thefree warp option this mostly applies toactual audio itself I'm going to zoom inon the kick here and if I use this freewarp and I put a marker let's say onthis kick right here and I put anotherone on this kick right here I can nowput one on this kick and I can move itaroundand I can get some strange effects fromthat[Music]when you're using the warp tool in thewarp Grid or the warp grid with themusical events follow anytime you clickon the temple Grid in here for exampledown here my temple is 128. if you lookup here at the measure it's measure 17when I click down here it puts a littlemarker up here of 128 so as you'removing these things around and thetemples are changing every time youclick with one of these it also marksthe tempo up here on the ruler so youcan kind of have some idea of what'sgoing on the warp tool snaps to whateverthe quantize resolution is in the gridhere but if you need it to snap toevents specifically like if these Tempothings get moved into strange places youcan go up onto your toolbar where yoursnap on and off options are if you hitthe down arrow and you change this toevents then when you move around it'llsnap to the different events I'm leavingit on grid for the moment when we'redown on this free warp option and we'removing through a piece of audio thesethings always try to snap up to anythingthat looks like a hit point if that'sannoying or you need it to be morefreestyle if you hold control it'll justignore that if you set this back to warpthe Grid or warp the grid with musicalevents and have a Tempo track where youcan see it like I do right here anytimeyou click now with your warp marker anddrag it whatever you do with it and it'salso going to put a Tempo event on thetempo track like this back up on thetoolbar using this free warp tool thisworks out really good if you are tryingto put audio to video or something likethat and you need to have a specific hitland at a certain spot it allows you tomake little slight alterations that wayif you have to move something to matchsomething visual so let's say you'vetaken using this free warp tool you'vetaken quite a bit of time setting upparticular warp markers I'm going to puta few into this Kick Drum right hereI'll putfour in here but there could be you know12 or more who knows the whole thing andthen you want to go to this track belowand you want to be able to warp it andmove it the same way but you don't wantto sit here and go through the same 12warp inserts again or figuring outexactly at what point they need to beclicked in there you have an option togo up to audio come down to Advanced andthere's an option that allows you toactually copy warp markers on theselected event which is what ishighlighted here then I can go down tothis track below it click on it I can goback up to my audio come down toAdvanced and this time I have the optionto paste the warp markers to theselected events and now those warpmarkers are in place as well so againany kind of warping I do these will allfollow together so we have seen fromearlier videos when we talked aboutbringing in pieces of music that have noTempo or Tempo that varies to a certaindegree such as this little Blues thing Ihave hereif I turn the click on while this isplayingthe click and the music have no relationto each other and we have learned thatwe can do an analysis of this if we goup to our project and then go down toTempo detection which brings up ourlittle Tempo detection panel and if wehit the analyzewe then have something kind of like thiswhich we could then bring in our warpmarkers if we wanted and we can makesome refinements in terms of movingthese points around and matching them upanything that is not exactly the way wewant it but what we haven't seen yet andunderstood is that if we were to try tochange this Tempo now that it's beenmatched to this audio we are able toindeed change the tempo but the audio isnot going to respond to it as an examplewatch this if I go ahead and let's saymake a selection of these points and ina second I'll bring them down to aslower speed but I'm going to play it asit is firstforeign[Music]and let it replay itself againyou can hear that the clickdid indeed slow down but the audioplayed exactly the same way so the audiohas no idea that the tempo has changedso if we were creating a song where wehad a piece of audio like this and wewanted to have the other instrumentsthat we were adding all play together asit is right now it wouldn't really do usany good because if we change the tempoof the new midi parts that we brought inthe synths and the drums whatever theywould indeed change as the tempo changedbut our original audio would totallyignore it so it wouldn't all sync up sowhat Cubase has given us for this kindof a situation if we select the audiothat we're trying to keep everything insync with and we go up to our audio menuand we come down to the option that saysAdvanced and then we go to this Sub menuif we come down there's an option inhere that says set definition from Tempoand if we click on that we get thisparticular screen and the options heresay save the definition in the projectonly or write the definition of theaudio files it tells us if there's someissues here audio clip has been selectedthere's no conflicting audio events andit gives us a check saying set all thetracks to musical time based so let mejust go ahead and take all these firstand I'll tell you more detail about itso I'm going to say okay so now I playthis piece of audio againand it appears really nothing haschanged yet everything seems to beexactly like it was a second agobut now what happens is if I selectthese Tempo events again[Music]and I slow them downnow the audio is going to slow down withit[Music]so the audio was affected by the tempoas wellso if I go back up and look at this menuagain I go to Advanced and come downinto that set definition from Templelet's look at these options real quickso the first option says save thedefinition in the project only and I cantell you typically that is fine that'sall you really want to do if it goes tothis other option says write thedefinition to audio files at that pointwhat it tries to do is it takes all thisTempo information and actually puts itinto this audio file the only advantageto that is now you can take this audiofile and this Tempo track and bring theminto another project I'm not necessarilysure of all the advantage of that asopposed to just redoing these steps inanother project but that's what that'sfor to write to the audio files in caseyou want to move them to another projectand then the last option down here saysset all the tracks to musical time baseto me that's an extra great bonus soinstead of you having to manually gothrough your tracks and find which onesare on the musical time and which onesaren't by having this checked it justautomatically sets everything that wayand you're good to go and then if weopen up our our Tempo track control Tthis is kind of obvious but go to thedraw tool you can immediately draw intime signatures any place you want youcan then type in what you want type itin as it's written in other words if youwant 3 4 type 3 with a slash mark andthen four you can also select thesethings and up on this info bar area youcan change the time signature as wellCubase allows you to actually open upwhat's called a signature track and samethings apply you can go to your drawtool and just draw in time signatures asyou need them you can select them all byclicking over them dragging and then hitdelete to get rid of them back in thetempo editor window here next to eachtime signature there's a little plussign if you double click on that littleplus sign it opens up options to changethe patterns right now I have a standardpattern going four four three fourbut let's say I go to this three fourand I say I'm going to go down to thedouble Tempo click on thatnow I get this kind of soundI can change the pitches some of thesenotes like if I grab this note and moveit to down here then I got this[Music]once I've changed something this switchis to user pattern at that point I couldsave this pattern if I want to recall itlater and that ladies and gentlemen isthe end of the discussion of tempo andtime signature congratulations you'velearned another one as always if youhaven't grabbed your navigation guide besure to grab that before you go links toall the content on the channel evergrowing and free to useand laid out in an organized way so youcan find your topics one after the otherso we covered quite a bit in this videotrying to get all the last bits ofinformation in there but the good newsis that these videos are up there as faras I'm concerned forever so if you needsomething to review or you need to goback and check it out or review anythingthat we learned earlier then there it isas always great to have you guys heresee you in the next video
