Editing Tempo and Time Signature V6 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from the digitalaudiomanual.com today we move on to our sixth video as we discuss editing Tempo and time signature in Cubase but before we start I want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future I'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or Cubase plugins or the cable guys shaper Box 2 and many many other projects that are in the works then I know you're going to find just like I have that this is an invaluable study Aid and the other thing I want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple PDF this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free Okay so let's get started so we're on our sixth video now as we continue this discussion of editing Tempo and time signature as usual all the previous videos are in the link to that navigation guide below which shows you all the previous videos in order and they're easy to find so a couple of videos back we went through the tempo detection on a piece of audio that we don't know what the tempo is when we ran through the analysis it worked out really good but there's a lot of other options there that we didn't explore so let's talk about those first so first of all I have this piece of audio that I'm working with right here and I don't know here there's no drums there's a bass vocal synth but if I hit the click track it has no you know resemblance to the original audio so if I wanted to use this in Cubase I definitely would have to figure it out so we go up to the project menu we come down to Tempo detection and we get this panel which we've already done a video on and our first step here to do is uh look at the name make sure that it's going to correct the right name which is it is right here so before I do this I want to make sure that I select my audio I either want to set my Loop or hit the letter P on my keyboard make sure my markers are set around this piece of audio and I hit the analyze button at that point it's drawn in this Tempo track below with all the little Tempo changes if you look up at the bars at top it's made a big change too in the way that they're spaced out and that's what you're going to see change when we go through these other options here let's go back and hear what we have and turn the click on now there's our audio here's the click that that sounds really good that's definitely usable so let's look at our Tempo detection panel and see what they've done here the first option I have on mine says multiply by two and the actual definition of that is that it's doubled the detected Tempo you know of course what really matters is is it working or isn't working but that's what the definition is so when I change these to these other options you're going to hear a real drastic difference in how it makes the click go for example when I go to this next one it's called divide by two which you're going to hear totally cuts the tempo in half so listen to this from the beginning this is on the multiply by two now listen to when I hit divide by two foreign in longer increments really it comes down to what works for you you'll have to decide you know when you're going to put your Loop or what kind of drums you're going to put to this or whatever other instruments you're going to use what kind of Click track do you want to your audio and that's where you'll make these choices now the next one says multiply by 4 divided by three and what this is for is basically if you have triplets things that may be in groups of three through your song this will not work at all with my option listen to what happens when I hit it it goes pretty much crazy now the funny thing is with these buttons you can sometimes hit them more than once so if I hit this again it cuts it up even smaller increments one little tip I can give you is go up to your edit and come down and find your history tab if you're going to be going through these in any way shape or form that you're going to actually use use your history to go back to where you originally did your Tempo detection I have found that if you just kind of go down the list for example doing divide by two or multiply by four or multiply by the other one we're going to do here they seem to be stacked up one on another and the next thing you know it's multiplying by four the divide by two and multiplying by three to divide by whatever sometimes things start to get way out of sync to where the even the thing you want to use won't work anymore so you know if you find one that actually is better for you I would advise you to your original analyzed piece of audio all right so let me hit the one that says multiply by three four and we play it here we go multiply by three four so obviously again that has nothing to do with mine because my Tempo is in four four but if you had something that was in three four or even possibly six eight these are options to try then moving on we have one that says off beat correction let's play that now the click is actually coming on the Off beats and I can tell you other pieces of audio I've done sometimes when it does an analysis it starts out sounding that way and that's great to have this offbeat correction because then you hit it and it changes it back to what it should be then you have an option that says smooth the tempo and for me this is grayed out because basically it already figured out a fairly straight line but if there was some real major irregularities here you could then hit this smooth Tempo and it would find ways to kind of smooth this curve out for you and then you do have a button down here to reset the analysis but like I said the actual way I found to be the better way is to use your history and go back to your original audio but you have this option let's hit this reset and now that changes the curve to no points on it at all we can hit the analyze again and then you have these arrows that point left and right and they're basically telling it where to do the analysis starting from the left or starting from the right of the curve so basically when you're hitting these multiply by two or whatever you're doing the analysis will start from wherever you set these arrows if you ever come up with a Tempo track that you think will be useful in another project for whatever reason you can actually save these things if you go up to your file go down to export and you have an option that says Tempo track it will open a file on your computer you can give it a name and save it by the same token if you get to a project where you want to import the temple track you go back up to file this time you go to import and at the bottom you have Tempo track you would just select it click on it and there it will be in your project so one more thing let's look at here let's open up the temple track control T in a previous video we looked at this option that says process the tempo this allows you to actually set how much time you want a certain amount of space to be but the process bars we haven't looked at if you hit that basically this allows you to do four different kinds of options here you can insert bars delete bars reinterpret or replace bars so for example I have this section here from bar 50 all the way to Bar 54. four bars and right now they're all four four bars but maybe I want to make bar 50 a three four bar so I go over to this thing that says start at bar and I make that bar 50. I say length and bars I only want one bar I can choose to insert or reinterpret let me go ahead and do an insert and now we're going to change this time signature from 4 4 to 3 4 and then I hit process and it does a couple of things it puts in a time signature right up here it's telling me it's in three four puts another 4 4 at the other bars so now if I start this click I'm going to get three clicks on this one and then back to four clicks if I want to delete that bar I can just go to this option that says process type insert I can go to delete bars add bar 50 I want to delete one bar of three four I hit process and now I'm back to Four Bars of four four all right so there you go it's gonna wrap it up for today as usual if you haven't grabbed your navigation guide be sure to grab that before you go there's links to all the content on this channel ever growing free to use so today we spent a lot of time looking at the tempo detection panel so you should be kind of familiar with now with what all those options are and there's a few more bits of things to go through and we'll be able to wrap this subject up just like we do with all of them as usual it's great to have you guys here I'll see you on the next video
