today we talk about

Editing Tempo and Time Signature V2 in Cubase 12

hello everybody Andrew Blake from The digitalaudiomanual.com Today we're moving on to our second video as we discuss editing Tempo and time signature in Cubase 12. but before we start I want to remind you that there's a link below to the free content navigation guide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content on this channel and besides that in the near future I'm going to begin adding tips and other bits of information that will only be available there you know things like simple steps that will get you started and up and running quick things that are in the videos but are written down in simple steps that serve as quick reminders when you need information down the road if you're working with programs like wavelab or Cubase plugins or the cable guys shaper Box 2 and many many other projects that are in the works then I know you're going to find just like I have that this is an invaluable study Aid and the other thing I want to make sure you understand is that this is not a simple PDF this is a constantly updated page that has any information that is new or anytime videos are changed really anything updated and once you have it you will always have the latest information constantly updated so if you haven't gotten it already go to the link below click on it and save it to your favorites it's my gift to you and it's absolutely free Okay so let's get started all right so we're on the second video now on the subject of the tempo and time signature the previous videos and the navigation guide in the link below we're going to start off today talking about Tempo track so let's actually add what's called a temple track into this project if I go over here in the project area inspector and I go up to an option here that says add Tempo track I'm going to click on that and that adds in place what is known as a Tempo track and if you've never used one of these they are wild really so let me show you let's just do some basic stuff here I'm going to start the beginning of this project foreign track I can immediately just start clicking on the actual Tempo line dragging things around and immediately start changing the tempo it'll ramp it up or down however I want and it's it really kind of amazing what difference it makes when you just add simple little Tempo changes in watch this [Music] you can hear the click speeding up slowing down if you look down here at the temple you can see it changing up and down foreign world you know we're so used to using one tempo so you start changing the temple you get really crazy results now once you've made points like this it's very easy to change them you just go to any of the points you have and you can click them drag them around however you want if you hold shift and hit your right arrow you can you know select the points to the right or the left and unselect them the same way just using your arrows going one way the other you can same way you can click a point and hold shift and click another point but and that works but I like just using my shift and my arrow I find it more surgical you can also click and drag over multiple points and this actually gives us a whole bunch of other options we're going to look at in a second and then if at any point you want to just remove everything from the tempo trick it's pretty much the same as any other track you can go over and right click right on the track and you have an option that says select all events click on that hit your delete key and those points are all gone all right I'm going to right click over here and choose this little Zoom tool click and drag over a certain area of this Tempo track just to bring it really close up into view go back to my little select tool now if I draw a couple of points in here different places here I'll click one here and drag it if I click and drag over these points and let go this enacts this Tempo event editor which happens when you kind of click and drag over these points and this event editor has all kinds of controls in it and you'll encounter things like this in Cubase a lot let me see if I can zoom in even a little bit closer here on this all right so I have a point here I have a point in the middle and I have a point on the end now if I go up into the upper left with my mouse this turns into like a little Point thing so if I grab this thing and I start to pull it down it tilts the curve of the tempo so this side stays intact but it tilts this side downward and the other points the point in the middle and the point on the end both kind of tilt downwards and there's one over here on the right as well if I grab that and tilt it down the one on the point on the left stays there but the middle point and the end point both kind of can tilt up or down if you hold alt while you hit this tilt on the left it compresses the sound meaning it kind of flattens the curves out so again the one on the right stays intact but both this left curve and the center curve get closer to each other the icon also changes from one little pointer to two kind of pointers so you can see there's a difference when you're holding the ALT key on that and same thing happens over on the right you can do the same thing if you want hold alt and you can compress the points if you go in the center there's a little pointer you can grab it and then all the points either go down or they go up and they kind of expand or compress as they go up or down if you go left or right of this little Center Point then it grabs this thing and doesn't doesn't really scale anything it just kind of moves the curve up and down I'm going to draw in a couple more points real quick here if you go down to this right you have another button and you grab that and that scales everything around its absolute center point on the other hand if you hold the ALT key and click that same area and drag it it scales around the relative Center you'll see the center part moves a lot more then you have this great little one at the very bottom which allows you to stretch this curve and you would think like these other ones it's just one control if I do it let me I'm going to go right in the middle here click it and stretch it and it allows me to kind of stretch wherever I'm at but it actually allows me to stretch wherever I go so if I move over here a little bit to the right and do the same thing and maybe close to this point I have and click on that then it's going to stretch in right in that area of that point it stretches the whole curve but it accents more right where I'm clicking at if I go over to the left and I grab that side of it it's going to Accent more and stretch it there so that's a really nice little option so a couple things to remember first of all you know when you're dealing with a Tempo trick any of the other tracks that you want to follow this Temple track remember that you have to have up here on the inspector this little toggle time set to Musical and not linear in this case it's lit up that's all you have to know the other thing is when you go up to your ruler here at the very very top you can right click on this and you get a bunch of options for most people it's going to be set to bars and beats but if yours is set to anything else time code or any other number of things when you're dealing with you know Tempo tracks you should have it set to bars and beats just to make sure that you understand and have reliable results another thing to always pay attention to if you're using a Tempo track make sure the activate Tempo track is actually lit up either on this Temple track or down here on the transport same thing if it's not active you'll see the curve if you have one but you won't be able to do any editing to it there are some other tools available in Cubase to help us if we don't know our Tempo and we're going to discuss those as they come up and then last thing we'll talk about here today like we said before you know there's different ways to draw these curves and sides you know there's the ramp and there's the step and that kind of thing well the tempo track has those options written right on it but if your Tempo track is small like here I've got mine kind of resized sometimes the buttons are hidden if I pull this a little bit over now I can see that I can choose my different kinds of Step or ramp or like we said the automatic the automatic being it remembers whatever the last one was all right there you go that's it for today as usual if you haven't grabbed your navigation guide be sure to grab that before you go there's links to all this content ever growing free to use and you know all the videos are numbered so they're easy to find so the temple Trek as we move along here to grab the concepts of what we did today what I would say to do is you know put in a temple track and then draw some points and then you know select the points and work a little bit with that Temple track editor display which allows you to you know angle the curve and stretch it and do all those kind of things if you got that stuff down then you're you're pretty much on the way to having all the main Concepts as we continue to move along with this this is a great this is a great subject in my opinion this is so useful and I've had various people write to me and wonder about setting different tempos for you know things that are out of sync and that kind of thing so this is going to be good for everybody all right as usual it's great to have you guys here and I look forward to doing these all the time and sharing this information I love your comments you know I love hearing from you guys it's all good too I'll see you in the next video
