direct offline processing V1 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we're goingto start talking about direct offlineprocessing in Cubase but before we startI want to remind you that there's a linkbelow to the free content navigationguide which is an easy to navigatewebpage with links to all the content onthis channel and besides that in thenear future I'm going to begin addingtips and other bits of information thatwill only be available there you knowthings like simple steps that will getyou started and up and running quickthings that are in the videos but arewritten down in simple steps that serveas quick reminders when you needinformation down the road if you'reworking with programs like wavelab orCubase plugins or the cable guys shaperbox and many many other projects thatare in the works then I know you'regoing to find just like I have that thisis an invaluable study Aid and the otherthing I want to make sure you understandis that this is not a simple PDF this isa constantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are changed it's really anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you and it'sabsolutely free Okay so let's getstarted so direct offline processingwhat is it what are the advantages whatare the disadvantages first of all whatis it there's a screen I'm looking atright here and this is the directoffline processing window and when weactually start working with it we'll beusing this window but I'm going to closethis down for the moment typically whenyou're adding effects you're doing it acouple of ways you're probably going tothe channeland maybe this clap soundI want a Reverb so I turn it onand then I have Reverb on the clapand it's in this insert section of thechannel itself or maybe I'm in the mixerand I want to go to the insert sectionand I add it in there and I can open itup and I can do various edits on itor maybe I add what's called a sendchannel in this case I'll go to thisclap and I'll go up and I'll say add ineffects Channel gives me some variousoptions I say yes and then if I open upthe original Channel over here on theright I have a send for that Reverbwhich I can change up or downbut all of those options chew up quite abit of processing power especially whenyou start doing it over multiple tracksright now down on my performance meterit's not showing too much use beinghappening this it's not pinning themeter or doing anything but if I startadding effects to every one of thesechannels and I have 30 other tracks inmy project and all of them havedifferent effects eventually you'regoing to see this performance meter goup and it may start hitting the red onthe other hand when you use this directoffline processinglet me open that window back up againwhat it does in this case is it actuallyputs the effect right on the clip itselfif I play thisand I add a Reverb into my directoffline processing[Music]I've added Reverb to this clip it'salmost like what we do when we freeze atrack or do that kind of a thing it'swritten right onto the clip itself andI've done projects where I've addeddirect offline processing to everysingle clip over multiple multipletracks and this performance meter hardlymoves an inch so the amount ofprocessing power is greatly diminishedwhen you start using the offlineprocessing another advantage to thewhole thing if we go back to the mixeragainover time if you start adding all kindsof effects and your mixer gets filled upwith all kinds of effects the bottomline is it's just cluttered whereas whenyou stay with the direct offlineprocessing and everything is just addedright onto the clip in many ways yourmixer can just be used just for volumeand that's it everything else can bedone on the direct offline processing soit just makes your mixer a whole lotcleaner and probably the biggestadvantage to the whole offlineprocessing thing is I can take thissound this clap sound or any sound avocal sound or whatever I'm working on Ican cut this up into smaller littleclipsand each one of these can have adifferent process on it that's theamazing thing this could have a delaythis could have a Reverb this could havesomething else and on and on it goes andnone of these chew up processing poweror at least very minimal if you were totry to add that many effects onto atrack and maybe use automation to turnthem on and off as the clip went there'sjust no way it can compete with what canhappen with the direct offlineprocessing and another big Advantage iswhen you save your project you can savethese direct offline processes on theseclips and come back three months orthree years later and everything isstill there and you can just change themas you want because again everything isjust right on the clip so now I'vepainted all the wonderful things whydon't we just use this direct offlineprocessing every time we need to add aneffect well unfortunately things are notalways sunny and the direct offlineprocessing doesn't always work at leastit doesn't always work as expectedyou're going to find that there aretimes where you will add an effect maybeon a send effect or an insert effect andit sounds as really wonderful to you andthat's the way you want it then youdecide to put it on the direct offlineprocessing maybe just to save some powerand you find it doesn't sound anythinglike it and that's just the way it goesother times it works fantastically soit's something you got to trial anderror through on the other hand it'ssomething you want to understand how todo because when you can use it it is apowerful tool so with all that beingsaid let's dig into this a little bitand learn about it okay so where do westart step one is you want to selectwhatever audio you're going to beprocessing for Simplicity I'm going tomute all my tracks and just unmute myhi-hat but when I have a tracking eventor a piece of audio whatever you want tocall it first thing you want to do isclick on it and select it so it changescolor and at that point you have to openup the direct offline processing windowand there's two typical ways I do thatnumber one would be to go to the audiomenu come down to direct offlineprocessing which then opens up thiswindow and this is where you do all thework if you haven't changed your Cubaseshortcuts typically F7 will do the samething now notice if I unclick my audioor my audio gets unselected all myoptions for doing anything go away so beaware if you have a bunch of grayed outoptions up here it's because your audioisn't selected but going back andreselecting my audio the next questionis how are we going to process it let'sstay with some simple things we'll justdo Reverb for now so how do we do thatyou have a couple of options to startwith at the top you have a drop downlist which gives you access to all yourplugins and if I come down here and Ifind let's say Reverb and I'll use therunx SC to click on that you can see itactually opened up the plugin right hereat this point it already went and addedthe processing and we're going to talkabout that in a second why it did thatI'm going to control Z out of thisanother option you have is you can putthings down here in the favorites as youcreate effects you can drag them down tothe favorites and then you can just getto them when you need them I have aReverb in my favorites so if I click onthat same thing everything processes andthe reverbs in place Ctrl Z to get outof this another option that's a littlemore unusual but I use it a lot when I'mdealing with this offline processing isto go to the channeland in my channel I'll put an insert inhere of what I'm trying to use in thiscase the Reverb and then I can open thatup in the channel which then gives meeasy option for auditioning or changingthe you know effectthere's no lag and I can change anythingI want to the mixer the delay time oranything like that but the interestingthing about that option is once you'vedialed in your effect the way you wantyou can actually just go right to theinsert grab it and drag it into youroffline processor which then will doeverything like we talked about beforeat that point you can either mute ordisable this insert effect again savingprocessing power but now you have thesame sound or effect dialed in with theoffline processor which then allows youto just take that effect out of thereand then reopen it back in the channelanytime you want to make some changes toit it's a real easy way to make quickchanges and affect things and you canhear the changes as they're made whenyou like it if you change it again youjust take it and drag it right back upin there and that uses like noprocessing power at all and then anotheroption I don't use this one too much butbut just for information if you go toyour media tab you go to any of youreffects that you have there and samething as you can click on your effectsand you can click those and drag thoseright into the processor as wellwhenever you use any of these Dragonapproaches and you take the time toactually create something out here inthe channel window or someplace else andthen you've dialed in some specificsettings when you drag this in from thatwindow those settings are retained forexample this Reverb time is 2.98 andwhen I drag it into the processor windowit's still 2.98 it retains all thesesettings if at any time you want toactually put this plug-in back to itsdefault settings without having to worktoo hard there's an option right up hereabove it that says reset the defaultvalues and if I click on thatimmediately the plugin goes right backto its original settings whenever you dosomething like that if you reset thesedefault settings those changes happenimmediately on the audio that can all bechanged with this Auto apply optionwe're going to discuss that coming up ifyou go to any of these processes thatyou put in here and you right click onthem you had an action to delete itdelete them all or just the one effectbut once you do that again the audioevent returns to its you know originalstate if you look up here there's like alittle check mark and anytime I start aprocess this check mark sits here andSpins it gives you some kind of visualthat processing is underway and thenwhen it's done it goes back to a checkmark So if I hit this room works againit's spinning and then it stops a coupleof other things when you have the focusup here if I hit this Reverb again if Ihit the delete key it'll remove theeffect the other undo Keys work if I hitCtrl z i can undo an effect and I canhit Ctrl shift Z to bring it back inonce you begin making various processchanges and you want to make sure youdon't accidentally delete them when youdon't intend to you can go to the trackitself and there's an option to lock iton the inspector if I hit that littlelock the offline process is gray out andthen I can't do anything further till Iunlock this track although the directoffline processing doesn't take up a lotof processing power it does kind of useup some space in terms of your harddrive if you find over time that youwant to just start you know cement thesethings in permanently right click on anyprocess you have and you have the optionto make it all permanent the thing isthough once you make it permanent thenyou can't come back and readjust theparameters later and then the last thingyou want to keep in mind just in thisgeneral you know overview type of thingas time goes on sometimes you addeffects and remove effects from yoursystem and if you've saved something asa project and then a year later you comeback with that plug-in has been removedfrom your system it'll tell you it's notavailable in a direct offline processingall right it's going to wrap it up forit today as always if you haven'tgrabbed your navigation guide be sure tograb that from the link below this videoit gives you continually updated accessto all the content on this channelsubjects are in order and categorizedclick on the link download it put it inyour favorites and make it your go-tooption anytime you're looking forinformation so we begin our journeythrough the direct offline processingit's a great tool and can really free upyour processing power when you're usingit we got a little introduction to itall and then we just looked at thewindow in a little more detail all thevarious options of how you can drag yourprocesses into the window and we will beexploring in more detail how thisaffects our audio just another greatfeature in Cubase and that list is onand on and on right as always it's greatto have you guys here I'll see you onthe next
