Working With Score Symbols V3 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's moveon to our third video as we continuediscussing working with the scoresymbols in Cubase but before we start Iwant to remind you that there's a linkbelow to the free content navigationguide which is an easy to navigatewebpage with links to all the content onthis channel and besides that in thenear future I'm going to begin addingtips and other bits of information thatwill only be available there you knowthings like simple steps that will getyou started and up and running quickthings that are in the videos but arewritten down in simple steps that serveas quick reminders when you needinformation down the road if you'reworking with programs like wave lab orCubase plugins or the cable guys shaperbox and many many other projects thatare in the works then I know you'regoing to find just like I have that thisis an invaluable study Aid and the otherthing I want to make sure you understandis that this is not a simple PDF this isa constantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are changed really anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you and it'sabsolutely free Okay so let's getstarted so we're on the third videotalking about symbols in the score andthe previous videos as are all videosfor this Channel or in the navigationguide in the link below but now we'redown into this others tab down herefirst thing we're going to look at isthe symbol that gives us the repeat ofthe previous bars many times you'llcreate a riff and you don't want to drawthe Riff every time on every bar in thiscase I just drew a bunch of the samenotes repeating over and over againsomething like this[Music]foreignsymbol notes if you click on it and youdraw it into the bar then you have it inthe bar but as you can see the notes arestill here so in a lot of ways thisdoesn't do us any good if I control Zout of this on the other hand if I goback and I click this and beforeclicking it I hold Ctrl and shift on mykeyboard and then hit it then it hidesthe notes behind it which then serves agreat purpose and you can do multiplesof these if we bring it over to this barhere hold Ctrl and shift click on it ifyou grab these you can move them aroundcozy out of this you have another optionthat says the previous two bars so ifyou only want to use it one time youjust click on something like that clickover this hold Ctrl and shift then itwipes out both of these bars and repeatsexactly what was on these two bars againyou can move these around if you need toand these are governed by that samerestriction we've seen before up on therestrict of the events up in the toolbaryou have the option that says snap therest and repeats vertically so as longas that's clicked on there these kind ofthings are only going to move verticallymoving on from that you have a littleoption here with three little dots andit just says other when you click on itand the idea here is you just get abunch of graphic symbols click somewhereI have a whole list of different kind ofGraphics the purpose of these is thatthey won't affect anything midi wisethey're just strictly written Graphicsso for example if I click on somethinghere now I have that piece of graphic inmy score if I want it after that we havethis thing called The Box symbol if weclick on that basically we can just drawsome kind of box or rectangle if we needit when you've clicked on these thingsyou can double click on them to open upvarious properties in this case it hasthe option for replace or transparent ifI move it to transparent and say okaythen this box basically just surroundsanything I put it on but it'stransparent if I change it to replacemode and click on it then it blocks outwhatever's in its view and then you havean option for a keyboard symbol if Iclick on that basically you can draw alittle keyboard down here again I candouble click on it to make it morevisual the way I want it right now ithas the white keys and The Black Keystransparent let's say I want my blackkeys to show up I uncheck that hit OKand then I have this Piano Thing If Iwant it and this is like if you havesome kind the educational thing you'retrying to demonstrate to somebody nextup we have an option that says IMGstands for image so we can actuallyinsert some kind of image if we wantonce I come over and drawthen my Explorer opens up and I can justpick some kind of image it appears to methat this works mostly with JPEG files Ihaven't made an exhaustive test but Ihave found that some images don't workand the jpegs do so keep that in mindlet's take this one right here anddouble click once you insert somethingyou can resize it grabbing one of thebar handles and you can put an image onyour score so moving out of the otherand we go into the form symbolsthe first thing we have up here arerehearsal marks they're either inletters or numbers for example let metake this one in letters and if I clickon the score it drew in the letter Ahere I'm going to move it down to makeit clear to see if I come over here andclick it again and draw another set ofthese innow it draws the letter B to one moreclick itdraw it inand now we have the letter clet's go ahead and do the number onesI'm going to hit the number here draw itin I get a set of number ones you canimagine what's going to happen next Iget a number two and then I get a numberthree so these are great markings youcan put on your score you know to alertdifferent players to this sectionsection A or section b or section one orsection two whatever you need that waynext to that we have the option toinsert the tempo if I click on that drawit in somewhere it gives me a mark andshows that my current Tempo is 120. youget this option for a symbol that saysTempo according to note values I don'tthink I've ever used something like thisin any score I can remember but maybeyou have when you click on it in thiscase it gives you a note value and thenshows you a different note value whichyou could right click on if you want andchange that to something else in thiscase a quarter to a 16th noteor maybe I want to change it from aquarter to a whole note it's supposed torepresent how the temple can change bynote so you have that option and thenyou have a range of the DCL signal orDCL sign or DS Define a all thedifferent things you have typically in asong where you can jump from one sectionto the other let me just quickly drawsome of these indifferent codasI have yet to do it but it is said thatthese can actually be tied to thearranger track I will be exploring thatfurther at some point and then I'llreport the results back and then youhave the option to draw on number one ornumber two ending hereonce you draw these endingsyou can click on the bar handles andactually resize them and if you lookover on the properties you have variousproperties for the font and the melismalines and Etc then we move on to asection that says words we went intothis pretty in depth when we weretalking about lyrics so I'm going to saygo back and watch those if you want toknow about this section but then we cometo this final section that says usersymbols and this easily could occupy awhole video in itself it's amazing howmuch stuff is in this one little areaconcept here is that you can create yourown symbol you double click on this itopens up a little editor of its own andyou have various tools to start with youhave the object if we move on we have aline tool which I can just start drawingin lines if I wantit has a rectangle tool I can draw arectangle over things I can right clickon those I can move it to the front orthe back I can move on and draw a circleif I want to or an ellipse with any ofthese objects I can go over to the colorarea either uses the outline or if I goto this block I can make it as the colorfillI can draw arcs in here if I want to theobject to draw and text opens up a textbox where you can type in something orset the size any of these objects can bemoved around you have the option overhere where it says linked if you clickon that this is telling you to the leftor the right of the center this issaying that when you actually put thissymbol into your score is it going tolock to a note on the left or the rightor do you freely move it then you have along list of functions all kinds ofoptions and you can export and save yoursymbols As you move down you have somethat have sub categories if I do acontrol all back to my functions comedown to the draw option you can tellit's a group or ungroup I can group allthese together and then when I move itaround I can move it as one and thatallows me to resize it as well andshrink it down I can then grab it alland as one unit it'll shrink down to asmaller little icon as I close thisscreen I then have that symbol over herethat you I can click on and I can comeover and draw it into my score and moveit wherever I want then if you want somemore of these symbols just right clickon your original symbol and say new andyou can add as many of these as you wantand just keep drawing these symbols soall in all this option graphicallyoffers a lot of possibilities if we comeback to these note symbols these aredependent on your notes so if I select anote and I click one of these and then Idraw it the symbol is attached to thisnote I can also select multiple notes dothe same thing click on assemble when Idraw it over one of the notes every oneof the notes gets that little symbol ASwe've seen many times for example isCrescendo but any symbols like this youclick and draw them many times they havebar handles which you can then changethe size of the symbolwe've seen this kind of before but onyour toolbar you have a layout toolwhich is a little hand that allows youto kind of move things around withoutactually changing how the score playsbecause if you take the object selectionand move it then it does change how thescore is played if at any time you wantto duplicate something hold alt and thenclick and drag and you can make a copyof it then you have this real niceoption that's called the bar handleseasy to overlook and not understand ifat any time you want to move notes orcopy notes or hold bars of notes youhave this option that says bar handlesup here on The View Bar if I hit thiseach bar now has a little square on theupper left hand corner if you grab oneof these squares in essence you'regrabbing everything in the bar so if Iwant to move it down to the next bar Ican just take it now those notes aremoved all your typical things happen ifI hold alt and drag I get a copy insteadand if I want to do more than one bar ifI click on the first bar handle and thenhold shift and hit the next bar handleand I can do that as I need to if youdouble click on these bar handles you'regiven the option of what to copy and youcan check and uncheck whatever you wantin the list if you turn on your barhandles and then come down and click oneof the bar handles you also get it overin the properties on the right if youwant to check that out you also have theoption to try to align things when youneed them and there's quite a fewoptions but let me show you one of themif you select what you're trying toalign like let's say I want this Trilland this note to line up I can come upto the scores and then I have an optionthat says align elements and you'regiven all kinds of options the leftright at the top the bottomif I just hit left and move the noteover and align these two elements andthen the last thing we'll look at if youhave Dynamics the pns them all theFortes if I select these and again I goup to scores I'm down to align theelements but this time go to Dynamicsthen they're all put on the samehorizontal line and that's going to wrapit up for today as always if you haven'tgrabbed your navigation guide be sure tograb that from the link below this videogives you a quick easy access to all thecontent on the channel ever growing andfree to use content is in order andcontinually being updated save yourselfa lot of work click on it download it toyour favorites use it when you need itso that is it for the score symbols alot of information in that one the bestthing to do is click on the symbol startdrawing them in and you will gain allthe skills you need in that area as wecontinue to move through the score a fewmore things to talk about we're going tocover them all as always it's great tohave you guys here and I'll see you onthe next video
