Working With Score Symbols V1 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com and today let'sstart talking about symbols from thescore in Cubase but before we start Iwant to remind you that there's a linkbelow to the free content navigationguide which is an easy to navigatewebpage with links to all the content onthis channel and besides that in thenear future I'm going to begin addingtips and other bits of information thatwill only be available there you knowthings like simple steps that will getyou started and up and running quickthings that are in the videos but arewritten down in simple steps that serveas quick reminders when you needinformation down the road if you'reworking with programs like wavelab orCubase plugins or the cable guys shaperbox and many many other projects thatare in the works then I know you'regoing to find just like I have that thisis an invaluable study Aid and the otherthing I want to make sure you understandis that this is not a simple PDF this isa constantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are changed really any anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you and it'sabsolutely free Okay so let's getstarted so we continue our discussion ofthe score we've been talking about itfor quite a while now all the videosfrom before in the navigation guide andthe link below now we're going to focusover what happens here in this left handarea it actually says symbols over hereon the tab when you click on some ofthese things you get all these differentkinds of little symbols to add into yourscore start talking about what happenswhen you bring these in different waysto bring them in some of yourpreferences and that kind of thing soI'm going to go to this favorites areaand take this little symbol here andlet's observe what happens when I wantto bring it in first I'm going to clickon it and the minute I move into myscore my object turns into a draw tooland then if I go buy a note and I clickon it again it draws that little symbolon the note I can erase it all thenormal ways I can just control Z out ofit since I just drew it or I can clickit again and I can hit backspace ordelete or any of the normal things or Ican go to my erase tool and I can eraseit all the typical things we've kind oftalked about so far but the idea thatyou click on something and then it drawswith the pencil and the minute you clickit again it goes back to the objectthat's a preference so let's talk aboutthat right away let's go up to edit downto preferences and we scroll down ourlist of stuff till we come to scores ifwe go to the option that says editing wesee right here it says insert tool andwe have the option that says display theobject selection tool after insertingsymbol and right now mine's checked if Iuncheck that hit apply and okaywhat happens now is when I click on mylittle symbol I can sit here and drawthis thing all day and it's just goingto stay there as a draw tool and it'snever going to go back to the object ifI wanted to go back to the object I haveto right click and make it an objecttool so the idea here is if you have toput in a lot of symbols and you don'twant to have to come back and clickevery single time when you're doing itthen you can switch to that preferencebut unless you're doing that typicallyyou'll want to leave it the other waythe other preference that'sautomatically set up typically when youclick this you only click it one timeand then you're into drawing it on thenote on the other hand if we go back tothe preferences at this point I'm goingto check the other one back but we havethis other option that says double clickthe symbol to get the draw tool you cancheck that fly in okay so now if I goover and I hit my symbol nothing happensI have to double click on the symbol nowif I want to be able to draw it in thoseare two basic preferences when it comesto the symbols so way back in one of theearly earlier videos that we startedhere we talked about layers and with thescore everything is on some kind oflayer and there's three layers you haveone that's called the note layer youhave one that's called the layout layerand you have the project layer yourfirst introduction to looking at thelayers and understanding them would beto go up to this little bar up here onthe toolbar and as you can see we havethese numbers one two three we have aletter L and we have the letter P onetwo three stand for the different kindsof note layersthen you have this L for the layoutlayer and you have the P for the projectlayer if you look at the score all of mynotes and everything that's written hereis all visible if I hit this little a ittoggles all the layers off and at thatpoint you can see everything pretty muchgrayed out layers are basically to helpyou edit things easier they're going tocome into play when you're printingmusic or extracting differentinstruments but the first thing you'rereally trying to do here is just get agrip on kind of what shows up and whatdisappears with the different layers soif I go back up to my score and I turnon the number one I can see that variouselements have come back into my score ifI turn off the number one hit the numbertwo then I can see that other elementshave kind of shown up and it just keepsgoing that way if I go to number threethen these various notes showed up if Ihit the layout layer if anything was onthat particular layer we'd see it if Igo to the project layer my timesignature showed up and again I can hitthis a toggle all the layers on or offas we said we have these layers one twoand three which are basically differentnote layers and as I turn them on andoff again and different things show upor not and that's governed by this dropdown that says set up the score locklayers when you click on that you cansee what's on the layer one or what's onthe layer two or what's on the layerthree if at any time you want to changewhat layer these different elements orsymbols are on you can just pick the oneyou want and then click it over to thedifferent layer so if you're editing acertain layer and you want to get rid ofcertain things you can move them todifferent layers you have this lastbutton here with a c on it that standsfor colorize the layers so if you kickthat on different layers actually takeon different colors as long as thesebuttons are active or lit up theselayers can be edited if I turn certainlayers off and leave certain ones ononly those elements can be edited thegrayed out ones are locked and can't betouched so you have some options whenyou first start putting your symbolsinto the score in terms of layers goback up to my notes symbol again and Iclick on it before I actually draw if Iright click on it I can then look andsee if I have an option to put it at thenote or the layout or the project layeryou'll notice with these symbols thatsome of them won't go into the variousdifferent layers in other words words isgrayed out for the layout or for theproject layer you can't put this onthose layers but if you have a choicethen you can pick it if you want to andregarding these different layers prettymuch your note layer is just your basiclayer the layout layer comes to whereyou're starting to pick out specifictracks maybe that you're working withand then the project layer kind ofapplies to everything so it's kind of aglobal setting and again as we get moreexamples going we'll see these in actionbut that's the reason you have thesedifferent layers in the first place I'mgonna go down to the Dynamics mappingfor a second click on this double Forteso if I go over here and put this in thescore again sometimes I can move thesearound but many of these symbols thatyou will bring into the score youactually can double click once you putthem in the score many of them will haveextra specific options that you can youknow customize that specific elementother things won't have that option if Igo back to my note symbol and I click onthat and I draw that in even though Idouble click on it nothing changes buteven the ones that don't change most ofthe time over on the properties you'llstill have some options to change somethings if you want so regarding thisfirst tab which has your favorites in itthis can be completely customized firstof all any symbol that's in here you canright click on it you can say remove itso if there's favorites in here that youdon't want you can start taking thoseout if you want to add something intoyour favorites most of the time you canjust go to whatever that is let's saythis clef here and I can right click onit and down on the context it'll have anoption that says add to the favoritesbut there's some things you'll see thatdon't have that option for example if Igo to Dynamics mapping and again I go tothis double Forte and I right click onit this has no option to add tofavorites so what do I do many timeswith these specific ones you canactually just hold the ALT key and thenclick on it and when you go back up toyour favorites then you'll have that upthere in your favorites as well again ifyou don't want it you can right click onit then and say remove itall right so let's take a little tour ofour symbols tabs here so we have keys ifwe click on any one of these and comeover here past the clef and hit it thenwe insert those keys and we can just hitanother one and it'll overwrite whateverwas there any of these the same thing ifyou ever want to get back to no sharpsor flats just hit C major and click thatin there and you'll get back to nothingand next up we have the clefs if youknow about clefs you'll know what youhave here if you don't well there youare there's the clefs you can draw overthe existing clef to change it and thisone also has the option for tab which wetalked about in the last video you haveall kinds of different options for timesignatures if you want to change themchanging the time signature willdrastically change your score of coursenext up we have the chord symbols youcan click on any one of these draw itwherever you want just as a side note wedid a whole video on inserting cords andwhat chords mean on the score and if youwant to know more in depth you're goingto want to go back and watch that videowhich is in the navigation guide and wehave the guitar symbols you just clickon any one of these and draw a pictureof a guitar our symbol here you can moveit around if you need to the guitarsymbols allow you to double click onthem in case you want to create some newkinds of symbols that aren't here orchange the way these look you have allkinds of options here you can see theway the symbol looks but if you go tothe horizontal option and click on thathit apply the symbol goes on its sideyou also have a down arrow here thatshows a whole library of all thedifferent kinds of chords you can add orchange if you want to and then if youwant to actually insert the notes fromthe chord and you click this optionit'll actually draw those notes from thechord right here on the score if youactually want to create a chord symbolthat doesn't exist you go to yoursettings and then down in the pages youhave the option for guitar Library ifyou click on that you can click theoption that says new you'll get a chordwith just a letter X next to it you candouble click on that change it towhatever you want to create your chordand then it becomes part of the libraryif you don't want it you can always hitremove and get rid of it the next tab isthe expression map this is a subjectthat is yet to be discussed but if youhad an expression map or your instrumentwas capable of it you'd have an optionto see it here the Dynamics mapping foryour mezzo Forte and you have this clefsEtc which basically was the same thingas the clefs it just gives you a quickoption for a clef a key and a timesignature again these are things you canjust quickly bring into your score ifyou need to but then you're quickly ableto see the settings and make somechanges if you want to it always opensup the settings when you try to click itin place here you can change the timesignature whatever you need your notesymbols which give you a lot ofdifferent specific articulation typesymbols these things usually refer tohow a note's supposed to be played thenyou have the Dynamics tab which againgives you Forte Mezza Forte and allthese different variations thedifference between the Dynamics and theDynamics mapping is the Dynamics mappingis actually connected to MIDIfunctionality you can use the Dynamicsin this option below it with the linesand the trills to kind of draw thingslike for example let's say pianissimogoing to a triple Forte and then you cango to your lines and your trills andactually draw a line from one to theother to kind signify that that's whatyou're doing all right that's going towrap it up for today as always if youhaven't grabbed your navigation guide weshould have grabbed that from the linkbelow this video gives you access to allthe content on the channel ever growingand free to use the content is in orderconstantly being updated it's there tohelp you make your life easier think ofit as a better resource than having tolook in the manual when you come hereeverything is the same but it's allbeing demonstrated in real time whereI've already done the work and believeme I have done the work we'll leave thedetails of that for another day so webegin looking at the symbols we startedtalking about some of the preferences welearned that everything belongs on alayer we saw note layers layout layersand project layers we talked about thelock layer screen we saw how we couldadd and remove some things from ourfavorites we want to get to them quickso we will continue on as always it'sgreat to have you guys here and I'll seeyou on the next video
