Working With Pads V2 in Groove Agent SE
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigital audiommanual.com today we're going to move onto our second video as we continuediscussing working with the pads andgroove agent but before we start I wantto remind you that there's a link belowto the content navigation guide which isan easy to navigate web page with linksto all the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there if you're working withprograms like wavelab or qbas plugins orthe cable shaper box and many many otherprojects that are in the works then Iknow you're going to find just like Ihave that this is an invaluable studyAid and the other thing I want to makesure you understand is that this is nota simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youokay so let's get started we're going tostart this off talking about how midiaffects these different patterns and theinstrument pads so in the last video wegot into the whole Port thing and wedefinitely kind of gave a longexplanation on that but it's a goodthing we did because this leads intowhat is happening at this point when youlook at Groove agent and you're lookingat your two tabs for instruments orpatterns you'll notice that at thebottom of the instrument there's somebuttons but at the bottom of the patternis where that Port button is as well asthis thing that's right now on mine itsays Omni but it could have a specificnumber to it and the reason this portand Omni are only over on the patternside is because that's what it'saffecting it doesn't really affect theinstrument side at least in terms ofthis thing that says Omni for exampleI'm assuming that all of you that areusing Groove agent SE are qbase usersthat only makes sense because Grooveagent SE comes in qase but there aresome sequencers and some Daws that don'tallow you to use different ports sotherefore this port option of being ableto turn that on and and use yourpatterns on one side and yourinstruments on the other you don't havethat option so they've also given youthis midi Channel option so if I clickon this and I set it to say channel twoin many ways it does exactly what theport did because now the patterns aregoing to receive their information onchannel midi Channel 2 whereas theinstruments will continue to receivespecific assignments which we're goingto talk about here pretty shortlysuffice it to say right now for ourdiscussion you have this midi Channeloption for situations where you can'tuse the port button but me personally Iwould use the port button and most ofthe time we don't even need to reallyuse that I'm going to load a kit backinto my groove agent here hit the folderfor this load panel do the same thing asalways go to the laser beams I thinkI'll go to this kit down here that saysCobblestone try this one out doubleclick so a veloc if you don't know it isbasically the definition andconversation about being able to hitsomething softer or harder and it getslouder or softer well the pads in Grooveagent allow you to do that if we switchover to the instrument side and I'mgoing to go up to this second one uphere on theleft if I hit in the middle I'm gettingthis sound but if I start moving towardsthebottom keep it clicking it gets softerand if I move it towards the top andclick it gets louder that's what's knownas velocity a lower velocity at thebottom higher velocity at the top solet's talk about this on every pad youhave a little M and little s for mutingand soloing when I play thepatterns and you can see them lightingup maybe I want to hear just what onepad sounds like so I can go up and hitthe little s forsolo and I'm I'm going to hear just thatsound let's go down and hear this clapsee now I'm hearing both of them cuzthey're both soloed now maybe I want toturn them both off but I don't want tosit here and click both of them at thebottom we have kind of a universal soloso if I turn this off they all go offsame thing I can mute things let me mutethe kick with a littleM let me mute this highhat and then there's a universal M downhere to unmute everything so I hit thatand it all comes back on each one ofthese pads if you right click it you getthis long context menu and you'll beusing this quite a bit for differentthings by the same token a lot of thesegive you like multiple choice meaningthat you'll see something in this listthat can also be done a different wayfor example the very first one if I goover this pad and I right click and thevery first option here says load aninstrument so if I click on that itactually opens up this dedicated loadinstrument screen which is absolutely nodifferent than the instrument screenover here in our load panel that we'vebeen working with the only difference isthat it's already like set up anddedicated just for instruments so insome ways it may be convenient toactually bring this open and you knowuse this one to find some of yourinstruments now when you right click onthis and go to that context menu and godown to save the instrument let's talkabout this for a minute I'm going toclose the screen back out on each one ofthese pads and we're going to look atthe instruments not the patterns but onthe instruments we said on each one ofthese pads there's a sample all right sohere we have a snare and this snare ifyou look over on the right may have allkinds of settings done the volume thepan different ways it's set up and allthe different options we're going tolook at if I want to save this let's sayI open this up in a preset but I want tochange some of these things and get itdifferent and then I want to save thiswhen I right click and I go to save theinstrument I now have a screen that Ican basically do my own thing to so Ican come down here and give it a newname I can categorize it with tag theway I want if I go up to where it saysauthor maybe I'll click on that and putsomething in here that I want or thecategory or any number of things that Iwant to do to make it unique for mything ultimately going down and sayingokay save this then when I open thisinstrument up again and I say I want toload a sample I will also have theoption to load things that I've createdas well the next options we've talkedabout already we can rename it or we canset the color to something different onething to mention right now that thesubmenu is going to be a little bitdifferent for the bead agent than itwould be if we had an acoustic kit we'lltalk about the acoustic kits coming upbut there are some things that are onlyfor the bead agent and there are somethings that are only for the acoustickids so the next thing on this list isit goes to the assigned outputs we'renot going to go deep into this right nowbecause we'll go into this pretty deeplater on with some scenarios of how touse it one thing you want to understandis there are a lot of ways to affect thesound of your drums in Groove agent nodoubt about that you can mess with thedrums in the groove agent itself there'sa mixer built in the groove agent whereyou can do some things and there's waysto take Groove agent right out intoqbase where you can actually then usethe channels The Equalizer and theeffect slots and everything else inqbase itself the rest of these we'lljust kind of learn them as we go if Ijust start listing them off to you itwon't make a whole lot of sense butwe'll go through them and actually usethem and then it'll all come togetherthe one thing you want to notice thoughtoo is that when you go to your patternand you right click you're going to seea context menu with some slightlydifferent options and when you go backto your instrument you'll have theinstrument submenu that gives you abunch of options and like we said alsoif I change this from a beat agent to anacoustic kit right click on some padsand you'll see some other options sothere's a bunch of different thingsdefinitely a world of things to explorewe'll all get to those as we actuallyuse them another thing to be aware ofdepending on what kind of user you areif you actually have a drum kit and youwant to use this stuff you'll noticethat on the instrument pads that youroption to edit and learn trigger notesis gray out that's because it's waitingfor you to actually hook up your drumsand then go to this little button downhere that says use the hardware controlmapping Once you turn that on then youcan go and do edit trigger notes allright just going to wrap it up for todayas always if you haven't already be sureto grab your copy of the digital audiomanual content navigation guide from thelink below this video it's the fasterbetter way to learn review pick it uplook it over all the different topicsthat are gathered there then you too canget started on your path to a better wayto learn all this stuff so we continuemoving through Groove agent today wetalked about how the midi effects thepads versus the port button we looked atthe velocity on some of the pads saw themutant solo Universal buttons talkedabout saving an instrument pad talkedabout how the sub menues changedepending on what agent you're lookingat talked a little bit about editing thetrigger notes we saw some options forlive drums and we'll continue to lookthrough all these different features andfunctions with Groove agent and qbas ingeneral as always it's great to have youguys here and I'll see you on the nextvideo
