VST Instruments V2 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's moveon to our second video as we continuediscussing VST Instruments in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins where thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so in our last video we gotstarted on the discussion of VSTInstruments that previous video is inthe navigation guide and link below buttoday let's start off talking aboutshowing and closing some of thesewindows when you're dealing with yourvsts and you start opening them up andsometimes you have many windows open youhave an option up on the window menu tohide the plug-in windows or to show theplug-in windows or to close all theplug-in Windows whether you open up thismain Rack or you use the media babe rackcontrols are always the same let's havea quick look at what we have on thetoolbar as we said the first button onthe left allows you to add an instrumentor right click and choose between aninstrument or a rack you have the optionto find instruments which again show youeverything in your project but you alsohave a search option you have thesebuttons that allow you to see the remotecontrol focus it basically moves up anddown through the racks you can see ithighlighted as it moves you have thisbutton that shows and hides the quickcontrols basically makes the racksmaller or larger and then you have thisgear for settings you can look at thisand decide what preferences you like andif you have this small view along thebottom you can see the option to add atrack instrument or add a rackinstrument on each one of theseinstruments we have certain controlsalong the top here let's have a look atthese real quick the first one actuallyturns the instrument on or off oractivates it deactivates it basicallymaking it able to play it or not play itthe next button gives us the interfaceso if I click on that it opens theinstrument up and I can edit it click itagain it goes away then you have thisoption for freezing the instrument letme just give you a basic demonstrationof this right now the instrument playsand it's active and I can move the partsaround but if I hit the freeze optionget a couple of options about whether Iwant to unload the instrument tracks orfreeze the instruments with it I'm goingto hit OKthat point it puts a little lock on thepart and all the controls on the rackdisappear it can't be edited in any waythe part will still playyou can still change the volume[Music]but I can't move the part do anythingelse to it it's now in this Frozen Statethis takes up a lot less processingpower so sometimes you can use this ifyou need to freeze this and then maybework on another track when you hit thebutton again again it gives you someoptions about the Frozen files but I'mjust going to say okay and at that pointeverything goes back to normal and thenyou can edit the track again[Music]next to that you have a drop down incase you actually want to change the VSTinstrument from what it originally wasyou get a preset browser that brings youback into the media Bay you get an inputoptions button basically allows you tobring the input into view you can soloand mute the input and then you havethis thing that says activate theoutputs for example if I go down to thisgroove agent and I hit activate outputsI can then decide if I want extraoutputs which I've activated in thiscase I put five extra outputs in hereand they now show up down in the mixerwhich now allows me to change differentinputs on my drumsand those also show up over in theautomation Lanes if you want to see themkind of in the next row you have theread and the right buttons you havesomething that hides the quick controlsand then the button that sets the focusfor the VST quick controls anytime youhit that that's the rack that's going tolight up as a side note to that if younotice when I hit these instruments thatrack lights up if I hit my groove agentinstrument that lights up we talkedabout this but there's a preference uphere settings this one that says remotecontrol Focus if I uncheck that when Ihit these different parts nothingchanges over here on the rack but if youwant your rack to follow whatever youselect on your instruments and you leavethat remote control Focus follows thetrack then when you change the trackyour rack will also light up differentlyas well all right so the last couplethings I want to focus on these arethings that come up quite a bit indifferent situations so I want to bringsome clarity to this particular issuefirst one let's go back to creating amidi track for a minute which happenswhen you create these instrument tracksor the instrument racks rather so now Ihave a midi track and there's nothingassigned to it and if I try to play itnothing comes out of it if I go overinto the inspector there's an area downhere that's kind of designed for therouting and if I click on that I get alist of all the different VSTInstruments that are open in my myproject and some of these are confusingbecause they look like they have similarnames if I didn't take the time to namethem properly myself for example if Icome down to the bottom there's like anumber of GrooVe agent ones and I'm notsure what I'm looking at here but if Ilook to the far left there's a number ofone two three four and it numbers themall the way to the bottom in this caseit goes down to the number 16. if I goover to my rack and I spin through mydifferent rack instruments I can seethat I have 16 rack instruments openkeep in mind that things aren'tcompletely named clearly for you or youdidn't name them when you put them inthese numbers are always going to behere to help you identify what you'relooking for as far as the racksthemselves and what instrument theycoincide with the reason you need thisis because many times you're doingthings in Cubase and especially when youstart getting into some third-partyplugins you're going to be setting upmidi tracks that are going to route tothese plugins to do various things andyou're going to need to know how to takeyour midi track and assign it to aspecific thing like over here in thislist for example if I go down to thisnumber 15 of the halyan Sonic and nowwhen I play something on this midi trackit's actually playing this hallion Sonicinstrument you can see the lights comingon down here on this trackin the same way if I move down throughmy tracks for example I hit this retrolog track if I look over on my racksthat's the one that's lit up but if Imove down to this midi track now it litup number 15 which is this retro log andthat lets me know that this midi trackis routed to this rack come down to thisgroove agent track then it lights upthis number 16 at the bottom so just beaware that you have a number system onthe racks themselves correspond to thenumbers when you're doing the outputrouting so you'll always know exactlywhat you're connected to even if yournaming system may be a little confusingand the other thing I want to show youis how you can actually use these VSTInstruments as an effect basicallyallowing you to stack them as oneinstrument if I come into my instrumentarea let's say I'm going to create somemore instrument tracks for thisexperiment I'm going to use the Retrolog it doesn't matter what instrumentyou can use anything you have I'm goingto come down to the count area and say Iwant four different instances of thisinstrument so this is going to put infour different retro logs I hit addtrack and now I have four differentretro logs let's change the instrumentson these it'll come out of this basicinitial wave it has I'm going to put thefirst presets that we have in here go tothe next track and there's a littlepreset browser right at the top so I cango through any of these you can alsoload programs right over here on yourinspector as long as their actual vst3programs that Steinberg recognizes let'sgo to this last oneso now I have four different retro logsoundsforeign[Music]if I go to my midi track again and rightnow on the output of this I don't haveanything connected to the output but Ican see I have all four of my retro logsdown here so I can assign them one at atime if I wanted to if I come down hereto the midi sends option I have fourdifferent tabs here I'm going toactivate each one of these just like theinput up here we had I have an inputdown here that I can now locate any oneof my VST Instruments I'm going to usefour different retro logs I'll pick thefirst one I'm going to go to the secondone third one and again this is where itcould be confusing because I have thislong list maybe I'm not sure what I'mgoing to if I get confused at any pointall I have to do is click on the trackand that will light up and will alsoshow me that the rack is number 20 overhere on the right so then when I go tomy outputs down here I know I'm going togo to number 20 which is right here nowwhen I hit this midi trackall four of these tracks are beingplayed at the same timeand I have this big stacked instrumentof these different retro logs[Music]if I go to my mixer I can use the singlemidi track volume fader and I cancontrol all four of those instruments atthe same time[Music]foreign[Music]what you can do with the midi tracks andthe midi racks all right it's going towrap it up for today as always if youhaven't grabbed your navigation guide besure to grab that from the link belowthis video gives you quick easy accessto all the content on the channel evergrowing free to use content is in orderbeing updated continually click on thelink below save it to your favorites andthen use it whenever you need it so wefinished up our discussion of the BSTinstruments we started out talking abouthow to hide show and close some of thewindows we had a look at the toolbar andmost of the VST instrument controls wetalked about the various input optionswhen you're looking at a midi Channel wetalked about the various input optionswhen you're looking at a midi Channelwith the VST rack and then I showed youhow you can stack your VST Instrumentsif you want to use them as an effectlots of ways to put the vsts to use inyour songs as we move along covering allthe different features and options inCubase and we will pick it up next timeas always it's great to have you hereand I'll see you on the next video
