The Project Window V1 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's begindiscussing the project window in Cubasebut before we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so the project window themain work area in Cubase we're lookingat a project window right now if Iminimize this or close it out this iswhat you have when you have no projectthere's various ways to open or create aproject you can go to your file and goto the open option and that'll open upan Explorer on your hard drive where youcan navigate to a project you may havesaved already you can also go to fileand write to the option that says newproject which brings up your Hub and atthat point you can find something you'vecreated or you can create an empty orstart over again however you want andyou can go right to the option that saysHub right here and open the Hub whichgives you the same options you can justgo right to the hub and pick somethingyou want but either way once you'reready to go you'll have a project openin like this and this is where you'regoing to start recording or doing anynumber of editing features so this iswhere we're going to begin ourdiscussion all right now a tour of thiswindow to begin with you have this areaon the far left that's considered theinspector it even says inspector up hereon this tab when you're in the inspectoranytime you click on a track over herein your track list the inspector isgoing to change with different optionsdepending on whether you hit a miditrack or an audio track or a group or afolder or whatever you've hit theinspector is going to change visiblyover here there's also another tab downhere that says editor at the bottom andif I click on that right now it shows abig nothing this reflects when you havesomething open in this lower Zone andyou've already created some kind ofevent up here in the project window letme draw something in here it shows adifferent list of options because now itreflects whatever is happening down herein the editor of the lower Zone you alsohave a tab up here it stands forvisibility and this reflects what'shappening in the mix console in terms ofwhere you want your channels to beseparatedthe thing you want to understand is allof these areas you can bring into viewor hide you have a button for the leftZone which you can turn on and off thelower Zone which you can turn on and offand this right Zone which you can turnon and off let's say I turn everythingoff except for the main project windowhere now I have What's called the tracklist over here on the left I have thisproject Zone in the Middle where all myevents are I have a ruler up on topshows the measures and that kind ofthing which you can click on and dragand expand if you want you have an infobar up on top and you have this bigtoolbar up here with all these variousoptions if I go back over and hit thisright Zone button up on top brings upall these tabs for the VST and the mediaand the control room and the meter thisis where most of the action is going tohappen when you're working in Cubase soit's worth noting that the project zoneis the one window that cannot be hid ifyou go up and deactivate all thesedifferent zones up here you are leftwith the project Zone which is the tracklist and then this area where all theevents and and another editing thingsoccur me personally I typically leavethe left Zone and the right Zone open Imight open up the bottom zone for aspecial occasion so otherwise I leavethat shut if I was using a laptop I'dprobably have that open all the time andnow that brings us to another Steinbergtoolbar and these toolbars are justloaded with stuff and the project windowis no exception if you've seen my othervideos you know I always make a littlepreset for none where I can get rid ofevery single button up on these toolbarslet me show you how to do that realquick if you right click up in thetoolbar area you have an option thatsays setup typically you'll have thingsin the visible area here if you justclick on them and say remove untilnothing is left in this visible areathen come down and make a preset and Imade one called none and it's no bigdeal because if you ever want yourbuttons back you have two options hereone says during the list reset all whichkind of brings the factory settingsright back up the way they were or youcan actually go to this option that saysshow them all and then you have everyconceivable button that's in thisproject toolbar which means that youwill never get any work done whatsoeverbecause there's no way to know whatbutton is what with all these buttons soconsider those options and decide whichis best but for the sake of me showingyou what all these options are we'regoing to start with the none option andthen we're going to start adding thesebuttons in one by one and figure themout first up on our list we have thislittle lightning bolt and this standsfor activate the project you actuallycan have multiple projects going in yourworking area up here they may becascaded in different windows forexample if I drag this down you can seeI have a second project behind here andthis little lightning bolt is not onbecause this project is not active youcan only have one project at the timeactive if I go back to my window menuand I click it I have the option tobring the other project into view youcan see this has a little lit uplightning bolt but only one project at atime is active bring this next button inthe project history and right now thisagain does nothing because I haven'tdone anything in this project let's sayI remove this event right herenow I can come up to the undo and bringthat back in next button we have isconstrain the delayed compensation givesus a little clock if I click on thatturns it on or off we're not going toget into a discussion right now of theconstraining the delay compensationbasically what it's all about is whenyou have certain effects or certainthings that cause latency in your tracksthis is an option to help you deal withthat kind of a thing but it's kind of asubject out of its own we'll leave thatfor another time next up we have What'scalled the media and the mixed consoleWindows if you use these buttons youhave access right away to the media Baywhich by the way we've done a wholeseries of videos on if you're interestedin the navigation guide we have ashortcut to the pool window whichcontains every bit of audio that's inyour project again there's a wholeseries of videos on the pool if you'reinterested in the navigation guidethere's an option here that opens themix console now I always keep my mixconsole I have two monitors so I have mymixed console way over on a secondmonitor here I'm going to drag it in fora second but this occupies my wholesecond monitor so it turns that on oroff you have a shortcut that brings upthe control room we've done the wholeseries of videos on everything to knowabout the control room if you'reinterested in the navigation guide andthen we have an option to bring up thedirect offline processing basically whathappens here is you can add effectsright onto your audio files and you'llnotice when you do it this way it causesno drain on your system resources soit's a great way if you need to conserveyour resources using this direct offlineprocessing that brings us to the nextoption the track visibilityconfigurations this is one I use all thetime in this window you can actually setup different configurations that you usemeaning if you have various ways thatyou want Windows to show up on yourscreen you can then go up and save theseas a configuration have shortcut keyshere next to it to assign to them thenyou can bring in these configurationsquickly you have the track visibilityagents which I am clicking all the timeconstantly when I'm working on a projectsome of my favorites on this is you canclick a track go up to your visibilityagent and say show only that selectedtrack clears out all the other stuffthat's here and you can work on justyour one track you can go back and clickon this and say show me all the tracksjust all kinds of stuff in here toexplore you have an option to filter thetrack types for example do you want tosee all your tracks or you can checkthat to turn them all off maybe you wantto see just your midi tracks you cancheck that maybe you watch your miditracks and your audio tracks and on andon and on or back to all tracks then youhave an option here that says Statebuttons click that on it shows you whenyou have things muted or soloed or ifyou have the listen button on or you'reusing read or write automation or youwant to suspend the reader writeautomation these are basically kill allbuttons for example let's say I havethree tracks muted here I can go up tomy mute button and hit this and allthose tracks become unmuted at once nextoption here is the automation mode againthis is one of those things thatprobably doesn't get explored half asmuch as it should and it's so valuableif you use automation you can turn theoption on or off to have the automationfollow the events you can hit thisbutton that turns the automation panelon and gives you all kinds of options interms of how you want to set up yourautomation you have a couple of optionshere in the drop down for touch or Autolatch or crossover my favorite here isthe touch which basically means if Iturn on my automation my rightautomation but now if I start my projectplaying and I touch any parameter withmy mouseit immediately goes ahead and writesthat automation Lane in for meautomatically so I don't have to go andsearch through this long list ofpossible pieces of automation or Lanesor things like that it just does itautomatically all right it's going towrap it up for today as usual if youhaven't grabbed your navigation guide besure to grab that from the link belowgives you access to all the content onthis channel ever growing free to usecontent is in order categorized and isthere to help you figure things out awhole lot faster so we begin thediscussion of the project window todaywe kind of looked at various ways ofopening up your project the file theopen option or the new project orgrabbing it from The Hub we got into alittle discussion of the zones and thevarious tabs in those zones and then wegot into starting to break down all thebuttons on the toolbar and we willcontinue that discussion when we pick itup next time as always it's great tohave you guys here and I'll see you onthe next video
