The Master Section V2 in Wavelab Pro
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our second video as we continue todiscuss the master section in wavelabPro but before we start I want to remindyou that there's a link below to thefree content navigation guide which isan easy to navigate webpage with linksto all the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started okay so we're on our secondvideo as we continue to discuss thisarea over here on the right that's knownas the master section the previous videoand all videos on this channel are inthe navigation guide below but firstthing I want to show you is somethingthat can be very confusing and notapparent to understand and let me showyou how it works with wavelab in orderto do this I'm going to give you anexample of extreme limiting so I'm goingto play the songand as you can see over here on the leftthe wave scope is showing us the waveand if you haven't used the wave scopethis is a great way to just seedifferences when you make adjustmentsbut I have a brick wall limiter on thechannel and watch what happens when Ibring this brick wall downlook what it's doing to this wave ittotally flattens it outso it's pretty obvious that there's someprocessing going on right now if youlook up on the master section in thearea that we were talking about lastweek There's a bypass button and if Ihit the bypass button you can see overon the meter that the effect has beenbypassed that the wave is back to normaland as you're listening to it it comesback in volume everything is normalagain and I'm going to turn this bypassbutton back on againso the effect is in place you can seeit's smashing the wave and now we'regoing to go down into the effects areaand there's another bypass button and ifI hit that buttonsame thing applies see the wave growsagain and we're hearing the bypasseffect and we're seeing that it's notaffecting it but these buttons bothoperate very drastically different ifyou enact this first bypass button whichallows you to hear that the effect hasbeen bypassed this looks like it turnseverything off over here if you renderyour file the effects in the chain willstill apply even though you have thisbypass button enacted watch this I'mgoing to render this file off actuallyI'm going to turn the bypass on so theeffect is in place and I'm going torender itand as you can see that file iscompletely flatlined the limiter is justcrushing it right down to the max aswe'd expect because the limiter was onnow as I remove this file I'm going togo up and I'm going to hit this bypassbuttonso it looks like as we look over on theleft it looks like it's not beingaffected but as I render this off I'mgoing to render it off just exactly asbeforeyou can see the wave is still flatlinedeven though it was in a bypass State uphere on the effect I'm going to removethis audio file I'm going to go back andun bypass thisyou can hear the limiter squashing thesong you can see it on the left now I'mgoing to go to the effects area andbypass itthe effect is bypassed we can see on theleft it's back to normal I'm going torender it off and as you can see now thewave is back to normal again so theeffects were truly bypassed at thatpoint so what am I trying to say hereand what is the design on wavelab inthis issue the design is that if youbypass the master section bypass thataffects playback only meaning that youwill hear it as being bypassed but ifyou render a file your effects are stillgoing to be in place on the other handif you bypass the actual effects sectionyou will hear it being bypassed and whenyou render the file it will also bebypassed when you render it I can't sayfor sure what the design Advantage is tohave a button that sounds like it isbypassed the effects and yet they stillfall into the rendering path but that'sthe way this is designed so you want tobe aware of that if you recall in one ofthe last videos I said that in when Ifirst got wavelab I was bringing filesinto wavelab and they sounded differentto me and I couldn't figure out why thisis very likely one of the reasons whythat could have been happening I mayhave had things bypassed that I wastesting and yet still when rendering offa file they would be in place if Ihadn't truly bypassed them the right wayor at least the way wavelab has it setup that it works so again be aware whenyou bypass in the master area youreffects are still affecting your renderon the other hand if you bypass them inthe effects area then they also areremoved from the rendering optionso then as we continue moving down intothe effects area pass this bypass buttonon the left we have this channelprocessing this allows us to actuallylook at an effect not just the stereomix but you can put your effects on themid side or the left or the right or themid or the side or any other of thesevariations that are listed here so itleaves you a lot of options on how youwant to actually process your signal andthen we come to a real gem that again isvery easy to to misunderstand or notunderstand at all let me kind of try togive you a demonstration there's alittle button here that stands for themonitoring point and basically this isjust saying where the meters are readingthe signal so in my chain here ofeffects I have a compressor followed bya limiter brick wall limiter and thebeauty of this monitoring point is thatI can pick which I want to see on mymeters so again I'm going to give youkind of an extreme example that we wouldreally wouldn't normally do but I'mgoing to add some extreme limiting hereso if we look over on the left on thewave scope again you can see thatthere's lots of little Peaks and thewave looks fairly healthy here as Ibring down the limiting level outputlevelthere we go we're back to our squishedflat lined signal againbut what's nice about this monitoringPoint again this is telling me whateverything is with the compressor andthe limiter in the chain this is whatwe're seeing on the wave but if I goover here and click on the monitoringpoint at the compressorimmediately I can see the effects ofstrictly what's happening with thecompressor so if I make adjustments withmy compressor I can still see Peaks hereand I can see the thickness in the waveany of those you know things I might belooking forif I turn off this monitoring point andit goes back through the limiter now I'mseeing the full effect of the compressorand the limiter so the monitoring pointis just a great option when you want tocheck out some specific effect that itmay be having on your signal as we moveover we have a preset option and not toomuch different from the preset option onthe main section the difference is thisjust kind of applies to you knowwhatever effect you're using at the timelike in this case I have the master rigyou do have an option for a defaultpreset if you want it to load a certainway every time so you can check that outthen as you move over you have a littlebutton for the effect options and thishas some neat options in it besidesremoving and adding the plugins you havean option to shift all the plugins downor when you go to the bottom you canshift them all back up again that's kindof convenient and nice to have if youdon't want to bypass an effect butactually want to just totally make itinactive if you have this little checkbox to totally turn it offand then you have a nice option to havewith a lock down here the advantage ofthis lock is a lot of times when youload any of the presets we've beentalking about they wipe out whatever youhave in place already if you activatethat lock on any particular effect thatyou have then when you load your presetthat lock will stay there and the samething is when you totally wipe them outit'll stay there as well similar to yourmonitor point you also have a solobutton here if you solo that then youget to hear that effect solo then theother effects are taken out then thelast button on the end same thing islike your bypass on top it takes theeffect out but this one will take it outnot only from hearing it but also fromthe rendering if you want that andthat'll wrap it up for today as usual ifyou haven't grabbed your navigationguide be sure to grab that before you gohas links to all the content on thechannel ever growing and free to use andit's there to make everybody's lifeeasier when you're searching for answersto questionsso we're working our way through thismaster section there's a few more thingsto discover and look at but as usualunderstanding is the key and we'retrying to make sure that we understandeverything that we can it can only helpus make
