The Controller Display V3 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com join me today aswe continue into the third video as wetalk about the controller display inCubase but before we start I want toremind you that there's a link below tothe free content navigation guide whichis an easy to navigate webpage withlinks to all the content on this channeland besides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wave lab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we've been moving alongfor a few videos now as usual allprevious videos are in the navigationguide and the link below this videoalright so before we go any furtherlet's talk about up on the info linewhen you see these four decimal placesand you will see this a lot in variousplaces you'll see in the project windowanytime you're in the info bar you'regoing to see something like this in thiscase when we're dealing with thecontrollers it's just showing the starttime but what do these four decimalplaces represent I've come up with myown kind of thing and it's not really aliteral description here but maybe it'llhelp you and give you something to go onwhen you're dealing with this when Ilook at this I always think of it as thebar the beat the divisions of of thebeat and the divisions of the divisionsso as an example of what I mean if itwas the bar of course that would be thebar if it's the beat in most cases in4-4 time that's going to be a quarternote and then the divisions of the beatagain in 4-4 time that would be a 16thnote and the divisions of the divisionsthis last number goes from zero to 119effectively 120 ticks so if you changethings from four four times to threefour time then you're gonna have to doyour own math or any other weird beatsor time signature configurations but ifyou think of it that way in terms of thebar the beat the divisions of the beatand the divisions of the divisions andthen in four four time being a bar aquarter note a sixteenth note and then120 to divide it at least that gives yousome kind of clue of where to go to letme show you a couple of examples make itmore visual as I'm looking at thisexample it shows bar six going to Bar 7and bar eight and if I put put a pointright at bar six like I've done herethen if I go a full bar over to Bar 7well that's your bar and if I go back toBar six and I go to the increments inbetween bars six and seven those wouldbe the beats and if I go in between theBeats those are the divisions of theBeats if you make something like thisfor yourself and spin these numbersyou'll see what I mean exactly I'm atbar six and if I go to this first numberand hit it to Bar Seven that's what itdoes the pointer goes from bar six allthe way to Bar Seven jumps the whole barthe first number if I go to the nextnumber in the decimal place and I startgoing up start to number one I go tonumber two number three number four youcan see it's going to these divisions offour which I would call quarter notes ifI go to this next division in betweeneach one of those quarter notes thenthat will go again four different Clicksin between each one and then if I zoomin real close because you can't see itreally any other way if I go to thislast division which goes zero to 119 itjust makes all those little incrementsin the middle there so it's good to havesome kind of understanding or point ofreference because this comes up so oftenwhen we're dealing with the info barit's good to have some point ofreference of what this means so like wesaid every controller kind of has itsown unique characteristic I'm looking atpitch Bend right nowand it always snaps to the grid as faras like going left to rightand that depends on whatever snapresolution you have up on the toolbar inthis case I have an eighth note so as Iclick this along every eighth note itsnaps but if I move it top to bottom itmoves real smooth there's no snappingand if I want to change that and I goover to this button here that turns thesnap of the pitch on it turns a grid onand then at that point it will snap upas well so it snaps up and left to rightin this up and down grid is determinedby this other gear right next to itwhere you can spin whatever grid youwant you know it'll show you can see itchanging here I'm going five six seveneight if you want to turn that off youjust uncheck it and it goes away also onthe pitch Bend actually if you actuallymove your pitch Bend wheel you'll seethis number over here change right beloweverything kind of reflects whatever thepitch Bend wheel itself is actuallydoingsome of the other things that are kindof fun to play with in this controllerLane if you go to your list and you goto the option that says the articulationDynamics select that to bring up thatlane and then if I take something likethis and I change over to my pencil tooland I go into this controller Lane andstart drawing it'll actually draw indifferent Dynamics like in this casemezzo Forte if I move to another placeand draw it again it'll do it again andI can do that a couple times if I wantjust for funthen if I change back to the select toolat the top of each one of thesearticulations there's a little triangleand if you click on that you can changeit to some other articulation list to avery light multiple pianissimo maybechange this one to just some slightvariation on that and I'll move thisinto a forteand then multiple Forte and this willdepend again on how your synth orinstrument responds to this kind ofstuff but then you get this kind ofeffectthey make it really easy to change is ifyou want you can actually just put yourmouse over it and spin the mouse wheeland then get some variation of whateveryou want sometimes you want to put yourcontroller data right in the projectlike automation for example I have thisretro log and I have the cutoff beingaffected by the modulation wheelso if I record a part like thisyou can see the modulation is right hereon the part itself and if I open this upin the key editor then I have themodulation right there as wellbut maybe I want to mess with this righthere in the project window if I holdCtrl and right click on this midi partand I go to my functions option and I goway down to the option that says extractthe midi automation it now takes thatmodulation out of the midi part and putsit on its own automation lane and then Ican do the same thing I would in thecontroller window I can draw differentyou know ramps or different things Iwant to do to this modulationand I have control now in the projectwindow to do that all right so I'm goingto show you some of the optionsavailable with this line tool this thinghas so many options and there's probablyeven more that I'm going to show youright here but the ones I'm going toshow you are going to get you throughmost of what you need to do let's justgo through them real quick I'm going toshow you the line tool again if I clickand drag it I get a straight line ofcontrollers and again I have this setfor ramp and not step if I move this tostep I'd have a million little dotsalong this line then the next optionwith the line tool you have thisParabola which kind of gives you thiscurved option you have the sign optionyou have triangleyou can hit a square waveand then you have the paint option whichis pretty much just like the pencil it'sjust a freestyle thing and those inthemselves will will do so much but thecontrol keys do so many things to thisas well let's go back to the sign for aminute because this happens for a lot ofthem typically if I start drawing one ofthese other options if I hold the shiftkey then wherever I'm at then I can kindof stretch it out so see I have likethree sine waves here so if I hold theshift and just keep drawing it's goingto keep those three and just stretch itoutif I start drawing those again but thenI hold the control key look at the verybeginning of the sine wave what itallows me to do there is determine wherethe point is I want to start do I wantto start at the peak of it or the valleyof it or somewhere in the middlewherever I want and then a great optionwhich you know again you probably aren'taware of if you haven't used it holdyour control and your ALT key and allowsyou to take that whole thing and move itaround wherever you want and thatapplies to pretty much most of these ifI go to the triangle same thing if Istart drawing some triangles I hold Ctrland ALT I can move it around once I moveit around I can hold shift and stretchit outtypically when I hold control instead ofit snapping it'll go freestylelet's draw the square ones and again ifyou move up or down with your mouse thenit draws you know a larger curve most ofanything you could possibly imagine youcan do with those moves back on theparabola setting if I start drawing thatif I hit the control it changes thedirection of the Curveif I continue to hold control then I canmove it smoothlyone last option on both a triangle and asquare if I start dragging this triangleoutand then I hold Ctrl and shiftI can like turn it into a saw which Ican drag either wayand with a square you can kind of likeshrink it or expand it if I drag it andthen I hold Ctrl and shift I can kind ofmake these squares different widthsso a lot of great options on thecontroller keysmost of the modulation data makes use ofwhat I'm starting to call the numbernine editor we first saw this when wewere looking at editing Tempo events butthis again happens in a lot of places inCubase and what I mean by a number nineeditor that's my own phrase for it tohelp remember it because it has ninedifferent controls so what happens is ifI select this controller data here I'mgoing to drag and select over itprobably going to be hard to see on thisvideo but because of the contrast butbasically you have nine differentcontrol areas and a lot of them areenacted by holding the ALT key but youhave an area up here in the upper leftyou have one in the center you have onein the right you have one on the middleright as you go down and then you haveone in the bottom and what they do isthey tilt the data there's a controllerdata going up and down here okay if I goin the upper left and it turns to like alittle arrow and I click it with mymouse and I start to pull it down whatit does is it anchors on the other sideof the right but allows me to move theleft up and down I'm able to move thecontroller data here on the left butit's anchored on the right now the sametoken if I go over on the right side anddo the same thing it anchors it on theleft and lets me pull it up and down onthe right now both of these have an ALTkey to them so if I hold the ALT keyinstead of dragging it up and down itcompresses it meaning it makes the curveflatter with mostly accenting whathappens here over on the left if I goover on the right and hold the ALT keyit makes the right side flatter withmore Accent on this right side if you godirectly in the center and start pullingit down it pulls it down and flattensthe curve as it goes down if you move alittle bit left or right of Center itstrictly pulls it down it leaves thecurve in place if you go on the lowerright here and you start moving this upor down it allows you to move the curveand compress it towards the center onthe other hand if you hold the ALT keyand move this it kind of keeps the curveright where it is and flattens it orcompresses it and then at the verybottom it turns into a double arrow andallows you to kind of move the curvefrom left to right so again the reason Icall it a number nine editor is becauseyou have one spot with the left and anALT key which is two one spot in themiddle which is three to the right isfour one spot to the right which is fivehold the ALT key which is six but on themiddle right which is seven hold the ALTkey which is eight then go to the bottomwhich is nine and so whenever you seethese editors remember you have ninedifferent spots you can actually affectthe curves all right so the last thingto talk about is the option of how youcan automatically select the controllersmeaning if I grab these notes up hereand and drag over them these notesbecome highlighted but notice thecontroller data below doesn't let meshow you a couple things on this firstof all if you don't have it go up onyour toolbar right click and there's anoption so somewhere down there that saysAuto Select controllers you want to makesure that's checked once that's checkedit'll give you a little button on thetoolbar that stands for Auto Selectcontrollers and if I turn that on nowwhen I grab these notes notice thecontroller data below it is alsoselected let me go back and turn thisbutton back off again with this off andnot being able to automatically selectthe controllers let's say I grab thesenotes and now I delete them notice thecontroller data that was applied tothose notes Remains the Same maybe youwant that maybe you don't but Watch WhatHappens Next now I'm going to grab somenotes from further down the line andmove those overand notice those notes have now goneover the older controller data againmaybe that's something you want but mostof the time it's not you want to makesure that the controller data goes withyour notes so I'm going to back out ofthis Ctrl Z back out of everything whenI go back up and turn this Auto Selectcontroller button on now if I grab thesenotes select them and then delete themfirst of all it deleted whatevercontroller was down here but mostimportantly when I grab the new notesand then move them over to wherever Iwant their controller data has now movedwith the notes so I know that my notesare going to play exactly as I expectedfrom their other location all rightthat's going to wrap it up for today asusual if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide from the link below besure to grab that has the links to allthe content on this channel ever growingfree to use in order and updatedconstantly to make sure you have all thelatest information available we wentthrough so many things in that video wetalked about the decimal places on theinfo bar and the different snapping thegrid and Dynamics options of bringingthe controller as an automation Laneright in your project and all the greatline tool options that stuff right thereis it's just amazing to me all thosedifferent options and it's so easy tonot know any of them and you'll sitthere and struggle hopefully now youknow them and my little catchphrase ofthe number nine editor hopefully that'llhelp you remember what that's all aboutas usual it's great to have you guysheresee you on the next video
