The Controller Display V1 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's begindiscussing controller display in Cubasebut before we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we begin the discussionof controller display or rather thecontroller display and right now we'relooking at it if you look at this bottomarea where these lines are this is thecontroller display area again if I backout of this and I go to a midi part andI double click on it which opens up thiskey editor on the top I have my midinotes but what's happening below thisline is this controller area now ifyou're not seeing this once you get intothe key editor if you go up to the tophere you have these various Zone buttonsand one of them shows the controllerlanes and if I hit that see it goes awayyou don't see it and if I hit it againit brings it back so you want to makesure that's turned on and you can seethis area down here so let's just take aquick tour of what we're looking at hereof course you have the note display herelike we said and the midi note throughthese little boxes as you go over on theleft you have this context menu thatshows up when you click in this box downhere and this is like the controllerselection and functions menu it givesyou basically options to get to all thedifferent controllers and options topick which controllers you see andvarious other options you have thisdivider line of course you can grab thatand change that if you need to seethings a little bit differently youactually have the controller displayarea that in this case is showing thevelocity but again it can be changed toa number of things and you can actuallyhave more than one controller layinghere we're going to talk about that in aminute inside these controller Lanes youhave these various controller events andthey display differently depending onwhat kind of controller like velocityshows these little bars with somethinglike pitch band or after touch may be alittle different as we said if you wantto show more than one lane you actuallyhave an option down here with a littleplus sign that actually creates morecontroller Lanes when you click on thatpick your optionand then you'll have another controllerLane which again has another bar and youcan again change the size of that if youwant to and then the last thing downhere you have this button for thecontroller Lane setup and that gives youa bunch of options as far as what yousee as well the first couple options inthis menu allow you to create presetsand I have no presets so it shows you nocontroller presets and it has an optionto add a preset if you click on that youcan name it and add it so if you havelet's say five different controllerLanes going you want to save that as apreset just save it and Away you go ifyou start making presets you have agreat option for organizing them you canlike change their names or delete themeverything always defaults back to thevelocity controller Lane and if you'veset up something where you got sixdifferent controller Lanes here and it'scluttered you go back down to your arrowand one of the options you have is toshow the velocity Lane only when youclick that you're back to just that oneof the most important options here andreally the main thing I look at in thismenu and what's important to me there'san app option that gives you how thecontroller events show up whetherthey're in step or ramp let me show youwhat this means in order to do this I'mgoing to add a pitch Bend controller inhere because it's easier to see it go tocreate a controller Lane I'm going tochange this option to where it sayspitch BendI go back down to this menu and I lookat this what kind of event I have and Ihave step or ramp I'm going to switch itto step for a minute and I'm going tochange my pointer to the pencil tool andas I start to draw and this matterbasically is clicking and dragging is Istart to draw and drag look at what itdoes it actually draws Little Stepsand if I go back to my pointer again Ican grab any of those little steps and Ican change them or drag them aroundhigher or lower and many times this ishow Cubase kind of draws in most of thecontrollers especially when you'rerecording them but let's do this otheroption if I go down to this arrow and Ichange it to from step to ramp now whenI draw with my pencil instead of makingsteps it kind of makes more of a smoothLine This actually becomes clear to seeif we switch to a different tool herelet me show you this tool if you'venever used a line tool you're going towant to investigate that because that isa really great option that they've givenyou back up on the toolbar it's usuallylike the last one on the end and if youclick and hold on the line tool youusually get these other options a sinewave a triangle where all these thingsbut right now just stay with the linetool I'm going to show you when I usethe line tool and click and drag justlike I did with the pencil now I get areal straight line just you know one biglong line if I let go and there you havethe this kind of a thing or I can dragit from down low I drag it up high andit always overwrites whatever was therebefore now I'll go back to my pointerbut now using the line tool and the rampoption you get these kind of you knowreal straight lines you can you knowthere's a point where you can drag it tobend it but the line is easier to moveand it moves especially when you'redealing with things like pitch bend itjust moves more like what you're goingto want it to do I'm going to go back tothis option againand change the type back to step and goback to the line tool when I draw withthe line tool on the stepand let go of it it makes like a millionlittle dots instead of one big straightline it's got a whole bunch of littledots and a row here and now when I goback to my pointer I can move those butunless specifically that's what you wantto do you're going to find that a rathercumbersome operationas opposed to using going back to thattype switching it to the ramp and thenthe line tool so be aware of thoseoptions that that was one thing I can Ican share with you that you know I Iwanted the ram option when I was firstmessing around with it I couldn't figureout how to get it to play everything Iwas doing was drawing in the steps and Ididn't want the steps I didn't want allthose little microscopic dots and andthings so the ramp tool is a much betteroption took me quite a while to find outthat you need to enact in this littlemenu down here whether you want it to bea step or ramp so that's I want to passthat along as a real important tip tokeep in mind now the other thing I wantto show you when you click on thesenames like I'm clicking on the pitch penand I have all my options for mycontrollers these are not the onlycontrollers these are the ones that areset currently but you have an optionwhen you go back down to this menu atthe bottom here where it says set up theavailable controllers and if I click onthat now you get one of those typicalCubase windows that shows you what'svisible and what's hidden and as you cansee I have a long list of what's hiddensome 128 different possible controllersso anything that you don't have in thislist that you want to add you can justgrab it there and by the same token ifyou don't want some of these ones thatare visible if they're just kind oftaking up Spacey you're never going touse you can click on those and move theminto the hidden category that way whenyou click on this list if you don't wantthis long list things maybe you wantjust three of these controllers thatyou're going to use all the time you canjust set them that way now the otherthing to be aware of in this list whenyou're looking at this stuff everythingthat's actually being used puts a littledot or a Diamond by it like the velocityshows a little Dot and the pitch Binshows a little Dot and these other onesshow nothing at the time because there'sactually no data in at the moment sowhen you're looking at your controllersyou actually have a tip in terms of whatactually is being used in your songanother option you have down here as youhit this list it says set up a dynamicmapping and this gives you actualmusical symbols like pns them all andmeso Forte and all this stuff and itshows you how it's going to affect yoursong If you're following the videos thatwe're making on actually reading thescore and using the score this kind ofstuff is really well implemented intousing the score but you have thoseoptions as well and then just like wehit up on top like with these rightzones and bottom zones and show thecontroller Lane you have an option inhere that says show hide the controllerLane so if you hit that it takes awaythe controller Lane out of sight anothernice option especially when you havelots of lanes like this you can actuallygo right over the name of whatever thecontroller is and instead of clicking onit like this and bringing up this menuif you have a mouse wheel you can justput your mouse wheel over it and spinthrough it and you can go through allthe different controllers really quickand see which one you want to get to andthat should get you started using thecontroller Lanes as usual if you haven'tgrabbed your navigation guide be sure tograb that before you go has links to allthe content on the channel ever growingfree to useand we're working towards making it thealternative to actually looking at themanual struggling with that and man thatcan be a struggle sometimes I'm workingon some sections that they're sooutdated they're referring to I thinkwhat some version of Cubase threeversions back and they still haven'tupdated it you go to try to find ananswer and add documentation you'reyou're really setting yourself up forfrustrationso anyway the controller Lanes apowerful set of features you know youwant to be able to understand them theramp and the step really so important Istruggled for so long having to work oneverything in the step mode I couldn'tfigure out how to get it to the ramp sothat was a real eye-opening experience Ihope I've saved you some time in thatarea as always it's great to have youguys here I'll see you in the next video
