Surround Sound V5 Ambisonics in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigital audiom manual.com today we moveon to our fifth video as we continuediscussing surround sound and now withambas Sonics in qbase but before westart I want to remind you that there'sa link below to the content navigationguide which is an easy to navigate webpage with links to all the content onthis channel and besides that in thenear future I'm going to begin addingtips and other bits of information thatwill only be available there if you'reworking with programs like wave laab orcub plugins or the cable gu shaper boxand many many other projects that are inthe works then I know you're going tofind just like I have that this is aninvaluable study Aid and the other thingI want to make sure you understand isthat this is not a simple PDF this is aconstantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are changed really anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you okay solet's get started so now we come to thesubject of ambisonics in this discussionof surround sound that we've been goingthrough and this is technology whenyou're using virtual reality or what'scalled augmented reality it allows youto have full 3d control over the soundand how it's different is everything upto this point has been Channel basedmeaning that it has certain speakerconfigurations of some kind but in theambisonics world you have various soundsources can basically be moved anywherein a spherical sound field so let'sstart off by looking at this to get someperspective on this let's go back up toour studio menu and our AudioConnections in my outputs right now Ijust have a stereo output bus let's goback to add a bus and as we look at theconfiguration drop down which we've beenlooking at in all the videos we've beendoing here go down through all thesevarious options that were given into themore category very bottom of thissubmenu we get these choices calledfirst order ambisonics the second orderambisonics and the third orderambisonics each one of these will offeroffer different Sound Sourceconfigurations but as we go up the listfrom 1 two and three one only has a fewof them and we go to the third order wehave a large selection of them so let meput these in there so we can demonstrateit I'm going to put the first orderambisonics add the bus and as you cansee it says first order ambisonics andthe sound sources say 0 1 2 and threelet's go back and add another bus we'regoing to go to second order ambisonicsadd the bus and now we have 0 through 8add the last one third order ambisonicsadd the bus and now we have 0 through 15and the concept here is the more soundsources we have higher the Precision ofthe sound sources so the new term of theday with this is hrtf stands for headrelated transfer functions and whatwe're talking about here is basically inthe world of gaming or virtual realityor 3D when you can turn your head andthe Sound Source appears to be movingwith you if you look to the left or theright or look behind you potentiallythere's the option to have the soundmove just like that giving you thefeeling that you're right in thatenvironment so unlike in our previousvideo on Dolby Atmos Steinberg has notput in some kind of wizard for theambisonics and there is a bit of manualsetup in order to utilize this I had todo some major searching and informationgathering from multiple sources in orderto find this information it is notpresented in the manual in anyuserfriendly format so let me show youwhat I've discovered and share it withyou first thing you have to do if you'regoing to use this go up to your studiomenu and again down to your audioconnections and then we're going to adda bus and as we've already said we havethe choices between the first second andthird order of the ambisonics each oneis just a little bit more refined interms of how it's going to give you moreprecise tracking so we're going to goright for the third order ambisonicsselect that and then add that bus whenyou're using this going forward you'lljust use this main title this is a thirdorder ambisonics all these other outputsin terms of us just monitoring it aregoing to be handled automatically butyou have to make sure in the setup thatyou go to your audio device and set itto not connected then you have to rightclick on your third order ambisonics andtake the menu that says set it as themain mix once you've done that you haveto go to the control room right clickover in the bus area and add a headphonebus once you do that go over to yourdevice port and set it to monitorwhatever your main left and rightspeakers are and the reason you have toadd the phones into your control roomand set them up as your outputs isbecause the phone output in the controlroom automatically sets up a binauralmix for you to hear through yourheadphones with your ambisonics panningso when I close out of here one lastthing we have to do if I go over to myedit and prep references down to VST andcontrol room you have an option thatsays use phone's Channel as the previewChannel and you want to check that hitapply and okay and if there was a wizardfor setting up ambisonics and qasethat's what it would do it would gothrough all those steps now ifeverything goes well here's what'shappened when you go into your controlroom you can see there's a tab that saysphones in that tab you'll see the wordsthat say VST Ambi decoder next to thatyou'll have an edit button when youclick on that it'll actually open upthis decoder if you have some audio thatyou want to play this way you want tomake make sure that it's routed out tothe third order ambisonics and then ifyou click on its mini Panner you'll geta new version of this vssd Panner thatwe've been looking at and now it lookslike a 3D graph with this kind ofspherical display and if you play youraudio and pan it around in this new 3Denvironment some other things thathappen by enacting this phone'sConnection in your control room roomunder this ambisonics environment thingslike your media Bay and your media rackwill now play an audition foryou I can click on parts or loops andactually hear them if I turn that phonesoff in the control room I wouldn't hearany of these any longer and if I takeany of these pieces of audio or Loops orwhatever drag them into my project whenit sets up a channel for them again itautomatically routes it to the thirdorder ambisonic so I don't have to dothat and sets up the panning for itother things that are interesting tonotice anytime you look at the outdisplays now it's almost like a spray inother words you're seeing the displaylike normal but it's a bunch of finelittle lines and that's a visualrepresentation of all these differentoutputs that are happening when wecreate these ambisonics buses anotherthing that is really fascinating if yougo to any of your channels and I'm goingto go to the main output for the thirdorder and on the insert I'm going to putin the supervision plug-in you can findthat under your plugins analyzer andthen supervision one thing you'll noticeabout this if you ever tried to use itbefore when you were working with stereoyou would hit on various options withthe supervision ones that would mentionAmbi decoder or ambisonics and you wouldsee the display would just say notavailable now when amazonics is enactedwe have a whole new level of visualreading let me show you some of thesethings looking at the level meter againit shows all these 15 outputs for usthey go down through these differentoptions the Vu look at that the levelhistogram Spectrum curve Spectrum barSpectrum keyboard and if you go to thismain dropdown you can change it betweenthe mix down or the option to see thethird order ambisonics information manyof the controls in this ambisonicsPanner are the same that we had in ourother VST Panner controls forpositioning up here and elevation butsome of the differences are for exampleinstead of looking at a room you'relooking at the top of someone's head andover on the right you're looking at theback of their head other controls thatare a little different down here we haveone that says the field size as I turnthis knob the head will get smaller andthis represents being farther from TheSound Source another control here saysthe source size as I turn this up we getthese extra circles so as I move theleft and the right they occupy morespace back in the control room we hitthe edit button for the Ambi decoder aswe've said already this automaticallysets up a Boral mix to your headphonesthere's a drop- down list here saysimmerse if you click on this you'regoing to see options to load an immerseprofile this is technology that's beingdeveloped basically looks at the shapeof your ear like a fingerprint andallows you to scan your ear to get themost customized experience if you clickon any of these links they take you tothe Steinberg site and you can get moreinformation on scanning your ear for animmersed profile on this decoder thereare options for head tracking which canbe automatic or manual to use this kindof a thing you actually have to have aphysical virtual reality device and thatsends information that will be receivedby this decoder and for example when youturn your head these controls for theyah the pitch and the roll will changedepending on where you actually moveyour head there's an option below thatyou can turn on and activate follow headall these things are dependent on havinga device that actually sends this kindof data over in your channels and yourcontrol room you have the same thingthat you can turn on the head trackingor do it manually one other note if youactually have a device like that you cango to your studio menu come down to theoption that says GoPro VR player remoteand this opens up a dialogue that youcan connect your device to and then thelast thing to be aware of if you go toan insert on any of your ambisonicschannels you can load this VST Ambiconverter paneland this allows you to convert yourambisonics audio between differentformats and this concludes ourdiscussion of surround sound in cuase asalways if you haven't already be sure tograb your copy of the digital audiomanual content navigation guide from thelink below this video the faster betterway to learn and review pick it up lookit over all the different topics thatare gathered there and then you to canget started on your path to a better wayto learn all this stuff so today weofficially wrap up our discussion onsurround sound in qbase we looked at thefirst second third order ambisonics wetalked about hrtf figured out how to gothrough the setup configuration welooked at the Amber decoder we saw howit plays a binaural mix through ourcontrol room we saw how the VST multiPanner changes in ambisonics and we hada look at the extra controls on thePanner as we look back over this seriesour initial videos showing how thingsbegan with surround sound all thetraditional speaker setups we moved onto see how things developed into Dolbyatmas and then today we saw the world ofambisonics I hope you've enjoyed havingthis information presented to you I knowfor my myself I have gathered many manybits of information throughout thisseries that I have found veryenlightening it'll be interesting to seehow this technology develops in thefuture as we continue to move throughall these different features andfunctions in qbase as always it's greatto have you guys here and I'll see youon the next[Music]video
