today we talk about

Surround Sound V1 in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigital audiom manual.com today we aregoing to begin discussing surround soundin Cubase but before we start I want toremind you that there's a link below tothe content navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate web page with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there if you're working withprograms like wave laab or qbase pluginsor the cable guide shaper box and manymany other projects that are in theworks then I know you're going to findjust like I have that this is aninvaluable study Aid and the other thingI want to make sure you understand isthat this is not a simple PDF this is aconstantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are changed really anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you you okayso let's get started so it's a factqbase offers surround sound it's also afact that I currently have a sound cardthat it basically use as a stereo setupso this whole discussion is going to bebased on the Viewpoint from a user thatworks with stereo but wants tounderstand what qbas has in terms of itssurround sound capabilities one of thefirst Concepts to understand in qbas issurround world is that when it's donecreating a surround sound project youcan deliver those files either asseparate tracks or audio files or youcan combine them into a surround soundmix in order to begin to have some roughidea of where the surround sound beginsin cuase go to your project and put inan audio track and when you're asked toput in your audio track you'll have anoption that says configuration and ifyou hit that drop- down arrow you'llbegin to see the options available inthe surround sound environment and asyou go to the bottom it says more andthen you have a further list of otheroptions that are available the variousoptions we see here lrcs left rightcenter surround 5.0 5.1 and it goes downthe list all these differentconfigurations as we go to the moresubmenu lrc lrs left right surround asyou come down the list you'll seesomething that says LF low frequencyeffect standing for a speaker that hasthe low sound the quadro this is one ofthe original surround sound setups andthen as we come towards the bottom ofthe list you have these first orderambas Sonics so you have all thesedifferent choices when you're setting upa surround sound mix of some kind if Icancel out of this the next thing youhave to understand is that in order toactually use surround sound you have toset up buses that take advantage of whatyour sound card offers if we go back upto studio and I come down to my audioconnections at that point I'm given abunch of different tabs and one of thetabs says output this point I can hitthe button that says add bus and I'mgiven the same choices I just saw in myaudio track I can go to theconfiguration I can come down the listto find any of the choices that areavailable there let's go down to moreand come down to the option that sayslrcs plus LF I could give it a name if Iwant but I'm just going to leave thatblank hit add bus and at that pointqbase populates the list with all thedifferent channels that are necessary tomeet that configuration assuming you hada sound card that could actually deliveron something like this you would go tothose channels take either the choicethat you were given or click on it andreroute it to something on your soundcard once you've created some kind ofsurround configur ation if you rightclick on the title of it you also havethe option to create what's called achild bus and these can be all kinds ofdifferent configurations as well buttypically I can hit a stereo and then Ihave the option to route to a stereo mixas well as my surround once you startusing some of these surroundconfigurations you're going to see somethings happening to the Panner alreadybecause I've added a surroundconfiguration the Panner looks differentthan it did before if I click on thePanner control it kind of changes to apendulum cuz this channel is still inStereo I can hold control and click toto reset it but if I come up to therouting and I change the output routingto the actual surround output thisPanter turns into something completelydifferent if I click on it now turnsinto a little dot that I can pretty muchmove throughout the whole surround fieldand if I double click on this it opensup a multi- Panner control panel whichgives us all kinds of options that we'regoing to explore as we go along but ifyou've never seen this before welcome tothe world of surround sound if I go backand change the output routing back to astereo out the Panter then goes back tothis kind of pendulum image you alsohave options in the direct routing toaccess your surround buses so then youhave an interesting option on eachchannel of your surround mix I go tothis track and I hit my arrow forrouting I can see every option that'savailable in the surround mix if I pickleft for example this now sends thistrack to this speaker only and there'sno longer any option for panning itthroughout the whole surround mix thereis asking for panning you will see it ifwe start moving the Panter left to rightbut what that's doing is it's taking thestereo information from this track anddeciding what you're going to hear areyou going to hear more of the left sideof it the right side of it or a balancedstereo mix but it's still coming throughthe speaker only and it's not beingpanned throughout the whole surround ifI've created any of those child buseslike we talked about earlier I then havethe option to also pick those out of therouting and pan those accordinglytypically when it comes to the inputrouting on surround channels you don'thave to worry too much about it you justrecord like you normally would unlessyou're doing something like you want tocapture a live performance and surroundor bring in stems from a surroundsituation so let's take a real basiclook at this VST multi Panner we'll diginto it in more detail in our next videothe first thing I want to show you rightnow I'm looking at a stereo input inother words my track is a stereo trackbut if I switch out of this I'm going togo over to this mic track which is asimple mono microphone input when I openthe multi Panner up there I have oneblue dot they call these handles bygrabbing this blue handle I can movethis anywhere I want in the surroundfield gives me a real visual in terms ofwhere the sound is going to be if I shutthis and I go over to one that has astereo input in other words the track isin Stereo now I have a yellow and a redwhich stands for the left and right ofthat stereo track and as I move itaround you can see there's differentratios between these handles you haveother options when you can't just dragthings the way you want for example if Igo down to this rotate knob startturning it and start actually moving thesound sources front to back I get awhole different configuration that I candrag around I can control click to resetthese down on the bottom as I startmoving these knobs the size of the SoundSource increases in other words how farit stretches from one speaker to theother it's worthwhile it's taking aminute and experimenting for yourself soyou can see the results of these and ifI move the front I get a big blue linehere another thing to keep in mind youcan set up multiple surround soundconfigurations if I go back to my studioand down to the audio connections I havea bus for this lrc with the LF out Ihave another bus for the lrcs and Icould create another bus if I want hitadd bus pick something else from thisdrop- down list go to the quadro and LFat the bus and all these configurationscan show up at the same time so that Ican experiment and see the difference ifI come back to my channel and I go tothe output all those different surroundsound outputs were available let's godown to the quadril that I justinstalled click on that and now when Iopen up the Panner then I would havethat option to experiment with so we'llhave a look at this in more detail nexttime that's going to wrap it up fortoday as always if you haven't alreadybe sure to grab your copy of the digitalaudio manual content navigation guidefrom the link below this video a fasterbetter way to learn and review pick itup look it over all the different topicsthat are gathered there and then you toocan get started on your path to a betterway to learn all this stuff as we nowbegin exploring surround sound in Cubasewe learned how the files can be exporteda separate or one surround mix we sawvarious configurations we saw that itrequires a bus setup we looked at someof the child buses we looked at thesurround mixer routing and panning itgot into the individual surroundchannels child bus routing looked at theinput bus and then ended up with a briefdiscussion of the VST multi Panner whichwe'll get into more in depth next timeas always it's great to have you guyshere and I'll see you on the next[Music]video
