today we talk about

Spectral editing V1 in Wavelab Pro

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's havea look at the built-in spectral editingoptions in wavelab Pro but before westart I want to remind you that there'sa link below to the free contentnavigation guide which is an easy tonavigate webpage with links to all thecontent on this channel and besides thatin the near future I'm going to beginadding tips and other bits ofinformation that will only be availablethere you know things like simple stepsthat will get you started and up andrunning quick things that are in thevideos but are written down in simplesteps that serve as quick reminders whenyou need information down the road ifyou're working with programs likewavelab or Cubase plugins or the cableguys shaper box and many many otherprojects that are in the works then Iknow you're going to find just like Ihave that this is an invaluable studyAid and the other thing I want to makesure you understand is that this is nota simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so one of the first set ofvideos I ever made was looking at thespectral editing options here in wavelabbut it's time to revisit and see whatkind of updates we have in thisdepartment now what you want to be awareof is that this is what's built intowavelab wavelab has its own set of toolsfor some basic spectral editing and thisis way different than a full-blownprogram like the spectral layers that'savailable which goes Way Beyond thesefeatures what's built into wavelab in myopinion is very good for basic errorcorrection if you have a click or a popor something in your master that isannoying that you want to try to get itout of there that's where these set oftools come in very good on the otherhand the full-blown spectral layers ismore for like removing a full instrumentit or you know various layers of theactual song or piece of audio whateveryou have before we get into this toodeep what is spectral editing I rememberbeing very overwhelmed the first time Isaw this option in wavelab let's go backfor a minute so when you have a basicpiece of audio like this drum loop Ihave hereand you decide to make some edits to itlet's say you want to cut maybe thiskick drum out or you know shorten it anynumber of things that you want to dothis piece of audio when you make anychange to these waveform displaypictures here it makes a change to thewhole sound there's no way to take intoaccount the high part of the sound thelittle part of the sound or maybe somekind of artifact in the background ofthe sound wave editing on this level canonly affect the actual wave itself onthe other hand when you get intospectral editing and to get to spectralediting let's have a look at this realquick when we're looking at our wave inthe audio editor like this at the bottomwe have these various tabs in the lastvideo we talked about this actualloudness tab when you click on that butback a few tabs there's one that saysspectrogram and if I click on that I getthese shades of color which now are therepresentations of the frequencies ofthe sound so for example if we look atone of these sounds here we have whichalmost looks like a picture of an l it'skind of thin at the top and it gets tothe bottom and then it's spread out alittle bit and these are the actualfrequencies of the sound of the kickwhich kind of makes sense because thekick low frequency is what rings outwhich this L bottom part is where thetop part of the kick is just very quickand transient but with spectral editingyou can go right into the actualfrequencies of this kick and startmaking edits and cuts to this sound inanother example that I have we'll getinto later I have something like where alittle cell phone is maybe in thebackground or some kind of sound thatyou didn't want in there and when you'relooking at a wave display of such asound you would never be able tosubtract one from the other because it'sonly just a picture of a wave on theother hand when you look at a spectralimage of something you'll be able to seedifferent shapes going from one to theother and it's easier to identifysomething that may be completelydifferent or not wanted in thatparticular sound some other options thatare available when we're dealing on thislevel down here when we're looking atour Spectrum tab on the far end here onthe left we have an option that clicksit from left to right or it gives us amid-side option when we're on the leftand right view when we click our cursorin this area herewe are making selections on the left andright side of the sound and in fact ifyou move your cursor up to the very topit actually shows an L letting you knowyou're on the left side of the channelas you come down to the very bottom itputs a little r by the cursor lettingyou know you're on the right side of thechannel but if you switch this over tothe mid side option for editing now whenI go to the top instead of an L or an Rit changes to the letter M telling youyou're operating on the mid side of thesignal when I go to the bottom itchanges to an S telling me I'm workingon the side part of the signal anotherthing that you're able to see in thisarea you have a frequency display overhere with a kind of like differentnumbers to tell you what frequenciesyou're working on then if you go up intothe tab area there's actually a tabdedicated to Spectrum and the tools andwe're going to go through these and seewhat some of them do so you actuallyhave two options or two tabs when you'redealing with the Spectrum display whenyou first bring in a wave like I havehere and then I go to the Spectrum tabdown here which gives me a picture ofthe spectrum display right next to thatyou also have another tab that sayswavelet and when you hit that sometimesyou'll see that go through like arebuilding before it shows you the imagebut the bottom line with the wavelet isit's just another display option it'smentioned that it's a finer or closerdisplay in my opinion they both areimportant to use and you'll wind up justclicking these two tabs when you'retrying to zero in on something andwhichever tab gives you the best pictureof what you're looking for that's theone you're going to want to usesometimes it'll be the spectrogram taband sometimes it'll be the wavelet justtwo versions of the same thing to helpyou see what you're looking for allright so you have a piece of audioselected and there's some things youwant to correct or fix and you've goneup and you've hit your spectrum tab uphere the first thing you're going towant to do is hit this spectrogramoptions and this is where some of thereal magic happens in terms of what yousee in fact even before you do that ifyou go back there's a thing that sayssettings with a little icon if you clickon that it makes sure that these thingsare checked make sure that your optionsare available so we hit the options andyou have all these things in in here thefrequency scale and the bands and thewindowand all of these things can be changedwith your mouse wheel if you just putyour mouse wheel over and spin it andI'm going to tell you that's the way togo instead of getting too hung up in allthis terminology which is veryintimidating and kind of confusing whatyou're really trying to do is isolate inyour spectrogram what it is you'retrying to fix and by changing theseoptions things are going to come intoclear Focus or become more blurry andall you have to do is put your mousewheel over and spin it so watch in mydisplay down here I have the display setup I'm going to work on something andI'm going to go up over the frequencyscale I'm going to start spinning mymouse and as I click it immediately thepicture below starts to change into allkinds of different variations certainparts become more in Focus certain otherparts become bigger and basically I canjust go up and down the scale spinningthis until I see the particular thing orerror or whatever it is I'm trying tozero in on becomes more and more inFocus once I get that as close as I getor I pick out the option I like the bestdo the same thing on the next one thatsays the fft bands if I put my mouseover that and I start spinning it Thingsbecome real blurry or they become verysharp in terms of what it is I'm tryingto zero in on keeping in mind that whatyou're going to ultimately do is comedown here and make some kind ofselection on whatever it is that you'retrying to fix and that's the next thingI would do if I make something here Isee a little piece I need to fix make aselection on it and that's where thisoption for the opacity comes in becauseif I click that it either becomes veryhard to see through or becomes almostinvisible so I can adjust the opacityout whatever it is I've made myselection let's go back to this lastoption on the fft window if I spin upand down on that same thing I have allkinds of great changes and options ofhow things look and chances are as yougo through this one thing or anotherwill bring the thing that you're lookingfor right into view and then you can goto work on it right now down in thepreset area I have this option that saysmetal blue but I have these othervarious presets down here I can pickfrom let's go through these real quick Ihave grayand same thing once I select that I cango through all these different kinds ofoptions by spinning my mouse wheel tobring things right into focus and againdepending on what you're looking for orwhat you're working on that's what'sgoing to come into focus in various waysthen we have this gray inverted we havean option for greenagain I can spin these options pick outwhat I want what comes clear the metalblue againmulti-colorspin through some of these optionsjust all kinds of great choices andreally bringing up the frequency thatyou're trying to find last option Orangemake some of these changes once we'vemade these changes then we can go on toediting by picking the thing we'retrying to change and either removing itor moving it all kinds of things we'regoing to talk about here shortly butyour first objective is just to try toget it into view whatever it is thesound that you're trying to find in hereagain you can play your partanytime you've made some kind ofselection which again we're going totalk about this in more detail but ifyou hit the escape button that gets ridof that selection all right it's goingto wrap it up for today as usual if youhaven't grabbed your navigation guide besure to grab that before you go haslinks to all the content on the channelever growing free to use I put it thereto be for your benefit and for mine youwon't believe how often I use my ownnavigation guide none of us can retainall this information at the front of ourminds all the time and it's the worstthing in the world when you go to startsomething or do something and you'relike how does that work well with thenavigation guide you click on somethingyou're reminded of something you mayhave learned six months ago and Away yougo no more fumbling through trying tointerpret what the words are saying sowe have begun the process of learningspectral editing we learned how to openand display the wave display and thewavelet we talked about the Spectrum tabwe talked about how you can see the leftand right and the mid side views on thespectral display we talked about some ofthe specifics of the cursor how it showsthe low and high frequencies on thedisplayand then some various options on how youcan set them to maybe refine the picturethat you're seeing so we will continuedown this road and dig into it more andhopefully make this subject very easyfor anyone that needs to use it atwhatever time you need it as always it'sgreat to have you guys here I'll see youin the next video
