Score Text and Lyrics V1 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudium manual.com today we'regoing to start looking at working withtext and lyrics in the score in Cubasebut before we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos or 10change really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're moving along withvarious videos on the score we've gonethrough many many subjects in all thoseprevious videos are in the navigationguide in the link below but now let'sstart examining what happens if we wantto add some text or the lyrics to oursongs if we look in this left Zone andwe go down into the area that says otherwe have these first two options that saytext and lyrics if you right click onany of these you're going to get optionsfor where you want to insert it into thedifferent layers right now we're justgoing to take the defaults whatever theyshow us and the difference between thetext and the lyrics the text isbasically just that it's text and it'sgoing to be able to be moved around andit's kind of tied to the bar lines forexample if I click on this text symbolbox here and then I go up and I startclicking in an area above the measurehere and then I just type in here issome texthit enter that's exactly what I have Ihave this little piece of text which Ican now move it aroundso if I have something some instructionsI want to put in here or something likethat you can move it right on down tothis area here I can select it and I candelete it on the other hand if I go tothe lyrics one which again I can rightclick and pick different layers if Iwant if I click on the lyrics and I'mgoing to go above this melody line thatI have right here I'm going to hit abovethis first note with the pencil andclick on it I get a little moreanimation to the whole thing so if Itype in let's say this and instead ofhitting enter I hit the tabit's going to automatically go right tothe next note and here I'll say ishit tab againI'm going to type in sumtab againI'll type in lyrichit tab again see and every time I hittab it's going to automatically go tothe next node so it allows me to tiethese lyrics right to the notes and I'lljust stop with that hit enterso now if I play my songI have these lyrics that are tied rightto this melody line above hereso again knowing the tricks really makesa difference one of the things I wasfrustrated with initially was once youmake a set of lyrics and you want toselect them I was typically justgrabbing my mouse and trying to dragover them and if this was the whole lineI was trying not to catch anything elsein the process and this kind of workedbut the better way is hold shift anddouble click your first word and nowyou've selected all the lyrics on thisfirst verse here once you've selectedall your lyrics you have some greatoptions when you just right click on anyone of these words for example you canmove these to another verse if you wantor you can copy them from a clipboardcontains the font and you can go to theproperties and speaking of which onceyou have selected these words whetherit's one or all the lyrics you can thencome over to your properties on theright change the font let's go down tosome of these weird fonts here I canmake them bold if I want change them toitalics so just all kinds of optionsthat way if you get to a lyric that kindof spans over different notes forexample I'm going to click right hereI'm going to use the word lyric whichhas two syllables and I'm going to typein l y but then I know it's going tospan another note so I can hit a dash inhere or a hyphen whatever you want tocall it and now hit the Tab Key and thenI can continue typing the rest of lyricRic and when I hit tab again it nowtakes that hype and puts it in themiddle and makes the lyric span over thetwo notes very well so we've talkedabout voices and the concept ofpolyphonic voices quite extensively insome other videosbut that same concept allows you to do alot of things just with lyrics as wellif I go to this first staff and makethis the active staff I look up on theextended toolbar at the voices thisparticular staff has only the option forthe one voice so if I add lyrics to itlike I did here Lyric over these noteshitting my tab bar as I go then itmatches these notes if I go down belowit hitting the lyrics over in the otheragain and I click below it but I thinkI'm going to be putting lyrics over thisset of notes maybe I have a differentyou know voice I want different lyricsand I start typing the lyrics let's saythisisand when I click tab I'm thinking it'sgoing to go to this note because I'mhere but it's not it's still reflectingthese notes up here on this top staffbecause whatever the voice is that'swhere these lyrics are gonna go and thisstaff only has this voice so if I'mstill on this active staff no matterwhere I put these lyrics they're goingto follow these notes if I go down tothis staff on the other hand and then Isee that it's been assigned its ownvoices I have voice one two three andfour here as well or even on this bottomstaff I go down here and I have voicesfive six and seven let's actually dothat let's go to this bottom step andwe'll use this on voice five if I hitlyric now and I click on this you cansee this is the active staff because theMark is here because I type in thelyrics this is uh you can see it'sfollowing these particular notes becauselyrics will follow the voice of whateverstaff you're on this way you could havemultiple lyrics you know for backgroundvoices and various voices all in thesame area all going at the same time soas we said earlier the trick toselecting all your lyrics at once ishold down shift and double click yourfirst word or lyric here and that willselect the whole verse or the string oflyrics you have and this is alsovaluable because at this point you cantake a lyric now with your mouse anddrag it to some other place like if Iwant to bring it down to the lower partof the staff and let go here now I canput my words down here on the lower partso I can move my lyrics aroundvertically that wayso here's a fascinating option the ideathat you can actually copy your textfrom a text program right into yourlyrics on your song I'm going to keepthis right on the score but you could dothis on a you know word or Google doc orany kind of text document but here'swhat we're going to do I'm going tostart by holding shift and selectingdouble clicking on my first lyric andthen I'm going to just like I wouldnormally do on any kind of text I'mgoing to copy it with the score youactually get an option that says text toclipboard so I'm going to take that I'mgoing to go down to my other and clickon text because I'm going to work withtext make a little Mark here and thenI'm going to control V that text rightin here you wouldn't do it this waybecause I'm taking it out of the songbut you can see the format that it needsto be in before I go further I'm goingto go ahead and delete this originaltext I'm going to hold shift doubleclick and then hit delete now my lyricsare gone so here's a scenario I'vewritten my lyrics I'm going to tell youa story now and the prerequisite is ofcourse the words have to have spaceslike they would which goes pretty muchgoes without saying but if you havethings that are broken into syllablesyou know that are going over differentknow it's like I have story and I'vebroken the word up with a hyphen so itsays story so you would have to take thetime to make sure that your lyricscorrectly match the notes you're goingto use and again I'm doing this in thescore but I would normally do this in asome kind of text editor so I'm going toselect all my text and when I rightclick on this pretty much like we justdid I'm going to say text to clipboardwhich places that text into theclipboard and now I go up to the firstnote wherever I want my lyrics to startin this case right here on this verse Bnote and then I go up to my scores and Icome down to the functions area and inthe functions there's an option thatsays lyrics from clipboard and if Iclick on that amazingly it goes aheadand types in all the lyrics correctlymatching all the notes on that staff andthe one that had the hyphen itautomatically separates it among thedifferent notes so if you have a songthat has multiple verses and basicallyyou've created the first person nowyou're going to go for the second verseinstead of having to retype it all outyou can just paste it right onto thenotes all right so the last thing we'lllook at today is this option ofinserting block text and this is reallyjust basically saying that if you createsome kind of text document you know andstore it on your computer and the textdocument could be you know lyrics or itcould be notes that you want to put orjust really anything you can then importthat into your score so let's do one ofthose I've already created a textdocument it has some basic instructionson it and I saved it as a text file soif I go over here into my other sectionalong with the text and the lyrics Ialso have one that says block text so ifI click on thatnow when I come over here and I drawthis when I click to draw it it actuallyopens up a file on my computer now ifthis isn't the right file I would haveto navigate to where I need it but inthis case it is and I've got my littletext document so I double click on thisand now it's taking that text right offthat text document and put the wholething in here this one's slightly smallso if I grab one of the corners I cangrow it to its full length but now hereit is I have the whole text and I canclick on it I can drag it aroundwherever I need it to be again if Iright click on this I have a bunch ofoptions but we're going to save thosefor next time but basically this is howyou can import a whole page of differenttext right into your score all rightit's going to wrap it up for today asalways if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatfrom the link below this video has allthe content on this channel in orderconstantly being updatedhas the answers to the questions you'relooking for or so we are attempting itcertainly is answered a lot of questionsalready I know it has for me and youcan't beat it when it comes time toreview boy I tell you that's where thething really shines anyway the scoreeditor today we kind of moved into thetext in the lyric Department we talkedabout typing in text blocks and lyricslearned that cool shortcut where we candouble click on the lyric and selectthem all worked a little bit with thehyphens and saw the lyrics on differentvoices and we saw how we can move thelyrics vertically and we also saw how wecould import lyrics right into our scoreand of course create a block textthere's still a bit more in the lyricdepartment and we will continue that aswe get into the next video but what agreat tool for songwriters or anybodythat needs to put anything down on awritten page this stuff is really trulyamazing alright as always it's great tohave you guys here I'll see you on thenext videothank you
