Score Playback Options in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's talkabout some of the playback options fromthe score in Cubase but before we startI want to remind you that there's a linkbelow to the free content navigationguide which is an easy to navigatewebpage with links to all the content onthis channel and besides that in thenear future I'm going to begin addingtips and other bits of information thatwill only be available there you knowthings like simple steps that will getyou started and up and running quickthings that are in the videos but arewritten down in simple steps that serveas quick reminders when you needinformation down the road if you'reworking with programs like wavelab orCubase plugins or the cable guys shaperbox and many many other projects thatare in the works then I know you'regoing to find just like I have that thisis an invaluable study Aid and the otherthing I want to make sure you understandis that this is not a simple PDF this isa constantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are changed it's really anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you and it'sabsolutely free Okay so let's getstarted so we've been talking about thescore for many videos all the previousvideos are always in the navigationguide in the link below but what we'regoing to talk about today I have toconfess I am a little bit stunned myselfI've been working with Cubase for quitea while I consider myself someone thatknows a bit about the program and whatI'm about to share with you I had noidea this feature was available let'ssee how you feel once I share this withyou and I'm going to go so far as to saythat this is July 2023 I have not seenany other videos demonstrate what I'mabout to show you I'm sure after thispoint there will probably be a few butgather around as I share this bit ofinformation so it turns out the scoredoes have the ability to follow a rangeof events now we talked about thisbriefly a while back because we hit onit but we had no examples of it and itwas my understanding that when itreferred to this in the manual it wastalking about the arranger track wellguess what it has nothing to do with thearranger track necessarily of course youcould use a range of events and a rangertrack but this is a score specificfeature I'm about to show you and Ithink you're going to be reallysurprised when you see what this iscapable of first of all let me play inmy little example that I created herefrom the beginningall right now one of the first thingsyou have to understand if you're goingto do this is to go up to your toolbarright click and come down and make surethe option for a ranger is selected thatwill give you a little toolbar thatlooks like this which is what you see onan arranger track the difference is thisis specific right here into the scorewhen we do what we're going to do hereit's not going to create a range ofevents but it is going to follow some ofthe markings that we put into the scoreso let's start with this example we'lljust kind of go through these symbols ifwe come down to the form symbols Tab andopen that up and we describe this stuffwhen we did a video on the symbols let'slook at at our options we have one thatsays DC elfini right which stands forfrom the beginning to the end I'm goingto click on this symbol and I'm going tocome in and click it in the score atthis area right here I'm going to kindof move it so it's right against the barand the first trick I'm going to sharewith you is that these symbols have tobe written below the bar typically inmusic a lot of times you'll see thisstuff all written above the bar but inmy experiments it has to be writtenbelow the bar for this to works properlyso just be aware of that so I'm going towrite it down here below this bar now inmusical terms what this is saying it'sgoing to do the score is going to startfrom the beginning if this was justsomebody playing this on the piano orany other musical situation they'd beplaying it from the beginning throughthis first line come down to the secondline and when they got to this part thatsays DC alphin a this is telling us tostop at this point go back to thebeginning start over again play it allthe way through to this point again andonce we get to this point play it to theend of the song fine meaning the end ofthe song now in order to make thesesymbols come alive we have to go up toour new arrange section that we put uphere and activate the arranger mode bypressing this button but let's see whatit does a minute ago it started from thebeginning and played all the way tillthe end if it's going to be successfulnow it's going to play from thebeginning to this point where it says DCalfini it's going to stop and go back tothe beginning play again and then it'sgoing to finish till the end let's seeif it pays attention to what we did herewe gothank youand there it goes back to the beginningnow let's see if it plays to the endthe minute I saw that I was pretty wellstunned as long as I have been usingCubase I have never seen anybodydemonstrate that maybe I just missedsomething but I have never seen thatdemonstrated or was I aware that featurewas even available now let's take this alittle further I'm going to erase thatsymbol click on it hit delete nextoption is dslfini I'm going to bringthat to the same spot and put it in hereclick on it now DSL finay in musicalterms is kind of the same thing exceptfor it has to have a sign to go back tothat's the difference between the DS andthe DC the DS needs a sign so let's comedown here to our symbols and there'sdefinitely a sign let's click on it andI'm going to come up and put that at thesecond bar here so now we're gettingpretty fancy if this is going to pullthis off what it has to do is start fromthe beginning play all the way to DSLfinish stop at that point but nowinstead of going back to the beginningit's got to know it's got to go back tothe sign which is this emblem right herethen continue on play through the nextline and then continue on to the endlet's activate our array change youroption and let's see how smart it ishere we goand there it went back to the signbeautifuland now it continues onthat is just incredible in my opinionthat is I'm just floored by thefunctionality of that let's continue onI'm going to erase that I'm going to goto this last option says DSL Coda DSLCoda means go back to the sign and thenplay to the coda I'm going to type itright here in the middle of the firstline I'm going to come down hit the signput the sign here on the first line thenI'm going to hit a coda and put thatright here and because you're using codeis you have to use two code is one whereit starts and one word picks up at soI'm going to click another code and putit over here in the middle of the secondline now if this is going to actuallywork what's going to happen is it'sgoing to start from the beginning andplay through until it says DSL Coda thenit's going to look for the sign whichmeans it's going to go back to this signI'm going to play this one bar until ithits this coded Mark once it hits thiscode it knows that it needs to jump tothe next quota which is down here andthen continue on to the end do you thinkit can pull it offlet's see what it can do here we goback to the sign yepand it jumped right to the quotaunbelievableI mean what an amazing feature if you'rea songwriter that is just amazing sothen it has some other options where wecan actually put in repeat bars and itwill understand that so what I'm goingto do is I'm going to go to this barhighlight it go over my properties andput in a repeat sign you can see rightthere it's got a big repeat sign thenwhat I'm going to do is it comes down wehave the option for a first and secondending so I'm gonna hit the first endingI'm going to draw it right here and I'mgoing to come over and hit the secondending and I'm going to draw that downhereand then I'm going to go where the firstending is highlight this bar and changethis to another repeat sign so it knowsto go back to this repeat sign thisworks properly it should start from thebeginning play all the way through thefirst ending with the repeat sign comeback to this repeat sign continue onuntil it gets to the first ending andthen jump down to the second ending andend let's connect our Ranger modefrom the topfirst endingunbelievableforeignendingthat is just incredible another optionyou have in the score is to add thearticulations from the expression Mapswe've been doing a series of videos onexpression Maps so be sure to checkthose out in the navigation guide aswell but for example I switched this upto a flute soundthank youif I go to the expression map tab I cansee the various articulations that areavailable for example I'll take thisornament and I can just click it righton this note and go back hit Legato goto the next note maybe down these notesI'll hit staccato go back to a Legato onthis one and then change to the accenton these last notes now listen to thedifference in the performance we get outof that[Music]thank youa whole new dimension to realism anotheroption you have is in the Dynamicsmapping area see I take a forte heredrop before the note starts okay to adouble Forte on this note a little bitlouder over here once you put theseDynamics in you can double click on themand you can choose a couple of optionsyou can have a change of velocities butsometimes certain synths won't changethe velocity so you have the option togo to send the volume I've checked thatI'm going to hit OK and this willactually change the volume control aswell let's listen to thatforeignso between using different Dynamics andthe option to use the arranger for therepeats and the different codas the wayyou can utilize these kinds of tools inyour score bring everything to a wholeother level and that's going to wrap itup for today as usual if you haven'tgrabbed your navigation guide be sure tograb that from the link below this videohere's a free quick easy access to allthe content on this channel ever growingcontent is in order categorized beingupdated all the time do yourself a favorclick on it download myselfand I think it's fantastic but we arenot done we are moving on to somethingelse and we will continue to dig away atall the various subjects and until we'vecovered them all as always it's great
