hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our third video as we continuediscussing the score note and restformatting in Cubase but before we startI want to remind you that there's a linkbelow to the free content navigationguide which is an easy to navigatewebpage with links to all the content onthis channel and besides that in thenear future I'm going to begin addingtips and other bits of information thatwill only be available there you knowthings like simple steps that will getyou started and up and running quickthings that are in the videos but arewritten down in simple steps that serveas quick reminders when you needinformation down the road if you'reworking with programs like wavelab orCubase plugins or the cable guys shaperbox and many many other projects thatare in the works then I know you'regoing to find just like I have that thisis an invaluable study Aid and the otherthing I want to make sure you understandis that this is not a simple PDF this isa constantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are changed really anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you and it'sabsolutely free Okay so let's getstarted so we move on to our third videoon this discussion of the score and restformattingthe previous videos and all videos onthe Channeler and the navigation guideand the link below but we're going tostart off today's discussion talkingabout creating a cross staff beam andthe idea here is if you have a scorewith some notes and one of the staffshas been either set to a split orpolyphonic then you have these notesthat are like low in this area here andmaybe I want these notes to go onto thisstaff but I want to still have the stemsconnected to these notes up in the topstaff where they keep their same pitchand everything stays the same so firstof all you have to make these into agroup which we've talked about in theprevious video select the note you wantto group I prefer to hold shift and thenjust move through my notes you can clickand drag over them if you need to andthen you can go up to this extendedtoolbar up here and there's an optionthat stands for grouping and if I hitthat all those notes are then groupedwith another beam over the top of themso a lot of things are going to stayattached when you do editing on thesenotes I'm going to go ahead and deselectthese because I'm only going to want toedit a few of them they stay in the samegroup but if I select this note and thenthis note holding Ctrl and this noteholding control if I right click on onethese notes I have an option that saysdisplay and staff and then it gives methe option of whatever staffs I havevisible here and I'm going to take theone below the staff I have here click onit and as you can see now these noteshave moved down into the other staff soit's kind of a visual thing it dependson what you want or what you're tryingto achieve but that's an option of howyou can do that we've talked about howyou can slant these beams if I go to oneside or the other and click on it then Ihave the option to move it like this dothat on either sideif I click on one side and I hold shifthit the other side I can now grab one ofthese handles and they'll both movetogetherand you can even take these beams andput them in between notes if I bring itall the way down here and those areadjusted with the beam in the middlethere's a lot of information about howties are added in and how Cubaseautomatically writes ties in my opinionA lot of it is more confusing than it ishelpful let me show you what I wouldsuggest when you're dealing with tieseasiest way to add them in that I havefound let's say I want to tie these twonotes together is just select the firstone go and select my glue tool then hitthe glue tool and then I've tied thatnote together if I have some tie notesand I want to change them for example Iwant to remove this tie you'll findthere's no way to really just selectthings or you know do anything like thatso again the easiest way I found isselect the first note of the tie thenyou can go up to your info bar to thelength and just pick whatever number youwant to change put your mouse over itand spin it and when you back it up alittle bit that note will remove thattie typically put a rest where the notewas you have another option in caseCubase is kind of like splitting yournotes where you don't expect them if yougo up on the toolbar make sure the cutrhythm is checked and then you go tothis knife tool which stands for cutnotes you you can click into the scoreand you'll get the thing that says cutflag if you can put anywhere you need itand that's telling Cubase that you wantto do your own specific kind of cutsthere and it'll kind of overwrite anysyncopation type things that may bewritten in by Cubase just another optionto try in case things aren't displayingthe way you expect them on your toolbaryou have this little hand which standsfor move single objects if you click onthat you can actually grab notes orother objects and move them kind of movethem around if you need to doesn'treally change the playback but if youneed something that's moved you can dothat if you go back up on the toolbarand click on the bottom of this pictureyou have another option that says movethe notes and the context if you do thatthen some of the objects around thenotes will move as well if you have achord typically you can grab only onenote of the chord and it'll still movethe chord but if you want to see all thenotes selected in the chord hold yourAlt key first and then click on it andthat'll select every note in that chordyou can use your object selection tograb a rest and kind of move it aroundand you have a couple of options do youwant it to snap or do you want it tomove freely if you go up on your toolbaryou have an option that says eventmovement restrictions if you have thatthat you select it in this drop downmake sure that this bottom option thatsays snap notes and repeats is checkedyour rest will snap vertically on thelines all right so now we want to talkabout Q notes and Q notes are basicallyjust kind of a different visualrepresentation of the notes you knowmaybe you want something to look alittle different so it stands out to getinto this we want to go back and talk alittle bit about the subject ofpolyphonic voices which we've gotteninto pretty heavy in past videos but forclarity's sake it's worth it to kind ofdig into this a little bit deeper at themoment when you look at a single staffof music like this let me play this realquickwe have all these you know it's kind ofall grouped in together here and we maywant to just have this broken up alittle bit visually so it's easier tolook at one thing we want to look atreal quick let's go up to our settingsmaking sure this is the active staffover here and then our staff tab overhere and then the Polyphonic it saysstaff mode right here and right now itsays set to single as long as this is onsingle if I go to any particular noteand I right click on it there's nooption in here to change the voices allof these notes are on one voice we'vetalked about this before up here there'sa little picture that shows thedifferent voices one two three and fourso when we go over here and we changethe staff mode to say polyphonic and hitapply a couple of things happen up hereit lights up gives you the differentvoices and when you click on any ofthese notes right click on them you nowhave an option that says move to voicewhich then you can move to any of thesedifferent voices this is the Polyphonicmode and it gives you a lot more controlover individual notes and how they actso we're going to leave it on polyphonicfor a minute since all these notes areon voice one we're going to move some ofthese off to voice two so I'm going toselect this note pull control and hitthis next note next to it next one nextone and next one now I'm going to rightclick on these notes and I'm going tosay move these to voice two nowtypically if you have these notesalready on different tracks it's realeasy to select your notes and then movethem to different voices but sometimesyou don't have the luxury becausethey're all crammed down to the samestaff here but now these are on thedifferent voices these top notes are onvoice one if I click on any of them thevoice one up here lights up if I clickon these bottom notes these are on voicetwo and if I click on them up here thenumber two lights up now this is wherewe get back to the Q notes let's say Iwant these notes on The Voice one tolook a little bit different just for avisual sake so if I go into my scoresettings make sure the right track isset which it would be if I already havethe active staff set here but now youhave an option to select if you want anyof these voices one two three four to gointo the cue voice there's little checkmarks you just put here in the Q columnand let's say I want to take this voiceone and make it a q note so I select itnow I come down hit apply and as you cansee now I have these tiny little notesthat look very much different than thebottom notes on the same staffeverything still plays the sameforeignbut it gives you a better strongervisualization you have an option withnote to say something like a chord and Iwant one of these notes to be a Gracenote I can actually select it rightclick on it there's an option that saysconvert to Grace note which will thenvisually move it off the chord justslightly in front of the note then ifyou take that note and double click onit you get that same note info buttonwe've been talking about which shows theGrace notes up here in the right and youcan add that cross if you want checkthat hit apply you get that little slashon the grace note if you ever want tomove these Grace notes back just doubleclick on them go up to where it saysGrace and change it back to normal andthen just hit apply and your note goesback to a normal note all right so thelast thing I want to talk about today istuplets and this is one of those thingsI'm not sure it's behaving exactly likeI would expect it to but let me sharewith you the things that I have foundthat will successfully pull this offright as you can see here we have agroup of 16th notes but there's five ofthem and they're occupying the spacethat typically only four of them wouldoccupy and that's kind of what thetuplets are they kind of squeeze in abunch of extra notes in a confined areaas in this example we have five insteadof four typically It also says thenumber like down here it says fivealerting you that there's five in thisone little spot sounds like thisfive little notes in a row but let meshow you how to go about creatingsomething like this I'm going to startby getting rid of it and the first thingyou're going to want to do is put inwhatever notes you're going to make intothese templates so if I want five notesI got to get five notes in here so I'mgoing back up the option where I use thekeyboard as the step input click on thatagain these are things we went over inearlier videos hold the ALT key move myarrow around to where I think I'm goingto insert these notes and I'll make sureup here in the toolbar that I have thekind of note I want I want a 16 so Iselect it so I hold the ALT key and Ihit the enter not just four timesbut five times which gives me these fivenotes now the way they are they'replaying just like they normally wouldfour notes and then one but I want allfive of these notes to kind of cover thesame spot so I go ahead and select allthese I'm gonna close this down I'mgonna go find another option up here inthe scores when you come down it saysbuild and tuplet and you click on thatand now you will make your choices whatdo you want to do here pick how manynotes you're going to change which Ihave five here and my display alreadysays five so I'm good to go there andit's going to cover the space of twoeighth notes which is pretty muchcorrect as well so I'm gonna go aheadand hit this option that says buildand at this point it created this littlebracket with a number five on it this isgreat this is what I want for a tupletproblem is it made my notes kind of lookfunny you got these two notes at the endthat are kind of grouped together and Idon't want those I want these all spreadout evenly I was playing with changingthe length in the end and the start butnothing really seemed to work as well asjust doing this going up to this lastnote clicking on it hitting the deletekey then right clicking to get mytoolbar with my insert node option andthen just clicking over the rest and Iput in my last topic the way I want itof course then I can use my mouse wheelto spin that up or down wherever I wantnow I have it looking correct I havefive notes over the course of where theyshould be just four so that's one way toattack the tuplets all right it's gonnawrap it up for this video as always ifyou haven't grabbed your navigationguide be sure to grab that from the linkbelow gives you access to all thecontent on this channel ever growing andfree to use content is it ordercategorized and it's there to make yourlife and my life a lot easier and rest formatting westarted off talking about the crossstaff beams and the beam Slants wetalked about how to add and remove tiescutting the flags the single object toolrest snap on the toolbar option we gotinto the Q notes we got into the Gracenotes a little bit more again and thenwe finished off talking about thetuplets a lot of information to absorbno doubt but just remember it's alwayshere you can go over it bit by bitwhenever you need it if you're workingon your score your answers are rightthere and we still have subjects to gowe're going to cover them all as alwaysit's
