Score Entering and Editing Notes V4 in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our fourth videos we continue todiscuss score entering and editing ofnotes in Cubase but before we start Iwant to remind you that there's a linkbelow to the free content navigationguide which is an easy to navigatewebpage with links to all the content onthis channel and besides that in thenear future I'm going to begin addingtips and other bits of information thatwill only be available there you knowthings like simple steps that will getyou started and up and running quickthings that are in the videos but arewritten down in simple steps that serveas quick reminders when you needinformation down the road if you'reworking with programs like wavelab orCubase plugins or the cable guys shaperbox and many many other projects thatare in the works then I know you'regoing to find just like I have that thisis an invaluable study Aid and the otherthing I want to make sure you understandis that this is not a simple PDF this isa constantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are changed really anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you and it'sabsolutely free Okay so let's getstarted so we've been working withvarious videos now for quite a while onthe score editor in Cubase and all theprevious videos as always they're in thenavigation guide and the link below thisvideo but let's begin today talkingabout some of the extra ways we canchange the lengths on these notes itturns out that if you select a notebesides all the ways we've been talkingabout with infobar and other ways youcan change these lengths you can alsouse these note value buttons that youwould normally use when you're firstsetting up the note to change the valuethe trick is here you have to hold thecontrol key when you hit them so if Ihold Ctrl and I hit one of these notesyou can see it change the note put arest in as necessary if I switch to adifferent value you hold Ctrl then itchanges the view againI can pick some of these other ones soyou definitely want to just experimenthitting different note values and youcan see what options will happen for younow this just like most of the otherfeatures is governed by the displayquantize option and right now my displayquantize is set to show only 16th notesso when I go to a 16th note and holdCtrl I can get it but if I go down to 30second notes or 64th notes it makes nodifference in the score it doesn'tchange anything whereas if I unselectthese notes like we've talked about andthen go over into the property view herewe have that option to change ourdisplay quantize right there in a listso if I bump this all the way up to 64thnotes now when I select a note hold Ctrlhit these other variations I can haveall the different combinations up to andincluding very fine amounts of noteskeep in mind I'm holding the control keyas I'm clicking on these other notes uphere in the display now this alsoapplies for the triplets and the dot ifI hold Ctrl and hit the triplet then Iget these kind of options if I hit thedot then I have other options thatappearusually if I hold Ctrl and hit it againit goes away that's a great way to getsome really fine and particular notevalues that you're trying to get inthere so we talked about earlier thatyou can glue notes together I'm going tograb the glue tool hereand I'm going to try to glue one ofthese notes to the nextand if you're looking at it and it'slooking very strange is because it isstrange it's like adding weirdconnections to notes all over the placeif I try to glue this note to the nextit makes this crazy combination of notesof course it's probably hard to see onthe video but the question comes is whyis it doing some strange thing why isn'tjust gluing those together well you haveto keep in mind that you can only gluetogether notes of the same pitchit's not allowing you to glue twodifferent kind of notes for example likethis last note here is a d and this noteway over here is a c if I try to gluethem together it doesn't understand whatI'm trying to do whereas if I go down tothis next staff below and I have a nodeF going to another F it's right on thesame line and I hit my glue tool on thatthen it connects it no problem at alland understands exactly what's going onso if you use the glue tool on somethinglike this higher area and I try to glueone note to the next and they'redifferent notes again it's going toignore it and what it's going to doinstead is it's going to go as far downthe song as it has to to try to findanother note of the same value in thiscase this note is an e it's going to goway over to this e and try to connect itwhich will give you some very strangeresult but if I click on this and glueit that's exactly what you can seehappen it made tie marks in this firebar way over here so again keep in mindwhen you're using the glue tool to gluethings together they have to be notes onthe same pitch all right so here aresome options that basically change theway things look but have nothing to dowith how things sound again I'm notreally sure what the advantage of thatis but it's something that's happeningso let's kind of understand it and getit down there turns out to be a displayquantized tool on the toolbar if you getyour toolbar and you go to the little Qoption you are then given a displayquantized info screen where you canactually change this display quantize sofor example I have it on 16th but if Iroll my notes down to just quarter notesand I drag my little tool which lookslike a q over the notes and I startclicking it because it can only handlequarter notes it will start changingthese notes to coordinate resolutionsthe notes will still play exactly likethey were because again it has nothingto do with how the notes are actuallybeing played if I go back and I changethe display back up to 16th notes andthen I start clicking through my notesagain sometimes I have to kind of Clickall over the place with it it willchange them back to the eighth notesthey were originally other options youhave in this area if you take aparticular note and just click on itover in your properties you have adisplay length field which you can againspin with your mouse and it will againchange the displays you can see up herethe note gets longer or shorterdepending on how I set it you also canactually just double click on anyparticular note and you're also givensome node info which again you can go tothe display linkand start changing it spinning it towhatever you wantone thing I've noticed in this screenagain we haven't gotten to it yet but insome scores that I was looking at thisis an option I wanted to know how to dolet's say I take these two notes and Iselect them and I want these stems to goup instead of down you have an optiondown here it says stem and right now itsays Auto and if I click on that I canset my stems to go up or down so if I goup and I hit apply now I have notes withthe stems going upwardsanother editing option you have let'ssay you take a note and then you haveties between the different notes youhave the option to always go to yourscissors tool and remove ties you justwant to go to the note the last note ofthe tie and click on it and that willremove whatever ties to that note allthe typical deleting notes work the sameway if you go to your erase tool forexample click on any note and that willerase that of course you can click anddrag over multiple notes and then clickon them and all those notes go away youcan hit a note hit backspace that'll getrid of it or the delete key and then youhave this great option because so manyscores are always broken down into somekind of basic piano Score first meaningthat you have the treble of the bassclef configured into what's called asplit score if you want to makesomething like that in your staff justgo to your settings go back up to yourscores and your settings and look forthe staff Tab and then once you findthat make sure you find the one thatsays polyphonic in that Tab and you'llsee an option here that says staff modeand when you click on that you'll havevarious options but one of them will saysplit and if you click on that and thenhit apply you will get this basic pianobreakdown with a treble in the bass cleftype of thing and any notes that go toolow on the treble will go down into thebass and vice versa the nice thing aboutthis is you have a couple of optionswhen you're messing with it for examplenow that I've made this into a splitstaff if I go down here and I saydefault by clicking this default buttonand then hit apply it goes right back tomy regular staff very easy conversion onthat and you have the option to pickover here in the track area which trackyou want to turn into the split stafffor example if I hit this warm pad andput it on the track option at the tophere go to the option that says splithit apply then it creates this splitstaff right here at this top staff if Igo back to default hit apply if I go tomy very bottom staff the one down hereand I hit split staff then it creates awhole different track down here on thebottomso really convenient and there's so manypieces of music out there that arewritten this way with this treble andbass clef you can easily now put thistogether and then start filling in yournotes and Away you go all right that'sgoing to wrap it up for today as usualif you haven't grabbed your navigationguide be sure to grab that before you goas links to all the content on thechannel ever growing free to use all thesubjects are in order constantly beingupdated if videos are changed or updatedyou'll always have them at the top ofthe list there everything's Group bysubject so you don't have to search sohard to find something and basicallyit's there to make your life and my lifea whole lot easier when we get stuck onsomething and we need to find an answerinstead of struggling and trying to gofrom square one that's the worst of allas we continue to move along working ourway through the score what an amazingset of tools we have here today welooked a little bit more at how tochange some of the note lengths welearned we could glue different notestogether with a glue tool we found outthere's a display quantized tool righton the toolbar and that we have scissorsthat we can cut the ties with if we needto we learned a little bit aboutdeleting our notes and then this reallygreat feature of creating this splitstaff which again opens up a wholelibrary of Music out there that'savailable in typical split piano stampso the learning will continue as wecontinue to grow and sharpen our skillswith our specific specialized set oftools great to have you guys here asalways I'll see you in the next video
