Score Entering and Editing Notes V1 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we're goingto start looking at entering and editingnotes of the score in Cubase but beforewe start I want to remind you thatthere's a link below to the free contentnavigation guide which is an easy tonavigate webpage with links to all thecontent on this channel and besides thatin the near future I'm going to beginadding tips and other bits ofinformation that will only be availablethere you know things like simple stepsthat will get you started and up andrunning quick things that are in thevideos but are written down in simplesteps that serve as quick reminders whenyou need information down the road ifyou're working with programs likewavelab or Cubase plugins or the cableguys shaper box and many many otherprojects that are in the works then Iknow you're going to find just like Ihave that this is an invaluable studyAid and the other thing I want to makesure you understand is that this is nota simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or any Time videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're into this subjectnow of entering and editing the noteswe've been looking at just basicintroduction and we looked at layers andsome of the last videos but now we'regoing to start manipulating some ofthese notes and seeing what happens whenwe do all right let's see what kind oftrouble we can get into if I take mymouse and I drag over any group of notesI can make a selection just like I wouldin the project and I have a shortcut keyalt P that I can set up a loop pointso now that's going to Loop over thatsectionso by the same token if I just take afew notes like maybe these four righthere and I click over them and I hit myALT P combinationI can just Loop over thoseand then once I do that here we go I'mgoing to grab some notesand I'm going to start composingso maybe I want to get into some realtrouble so now what I'm going to do isI'm going to select the notes that Iwant to mess with hit my ALT P for myLoop pointbut I'm going to delete all those justhit the delete keyand if I right click I actually have anoption next to the select where itinserts a note now I can click right onthe staffand immediately once I click it I candrag it aroundup or to the left or rightlet's go up or downonce I release it it plays it if I go toanother spot or wherever I can click itwherever because I can drag it once Iclick it[Music]foreignup here on top you have this option toactually choose what kind of note valueyou want to come in when you first clickon things and there's some restrictionson this depending on what you put intoyour display settings but we'll juststay simple for a minute now if we goback to our settings go up to the scoresdown to the settings and like we did atthe very beginning we set up the displayquantize and I kind of told you to go tothe lowest possible option like rightnow the notes are it shows a four herefor a quarter note now the good and badof this is if you're adding notes likewe're doing here if you whatever youhave this set for like if I have aquarter note that's all I'm going to beable to put in here is quarter notes solet's change this let's make this eighthnotes nowwe're not going to go crazy with 64thnotes yet so I'm going to add eighthnotes hit applynow if I go back and start adding notesgo to the little insert note optionit'll allow me to add eighth notes in ifI go to a note after it[Music]let's go down the line a little bit[Music]foreignso maybe I want to start adding somechords in here so all I have to do isClick over where any of the existingnotes are and draw in another noteforeignmoving the existing notes go back to mypointer toolyou have some preferences available toscores if we go up to edit come down topreferences look for scores down hereand then I'm going to go to the one thatsays editing and then we can see we havethis list of stuff and there's one herethat says use the mouse wheel totranspose notes and you can check thator uncheck it I'm going to leave itchecked and let me show you what thatdoes if I apply it and say okay now if Ihit a note not only can I drag itbut I can use my mouse wheel which I'musing right nowto spin the note up and downI'm gonna put my original notes back fora second I'm going to erase these threeright here select them hit deleteso with that settings of the displayquantize which we just looked at and ifI set these again to let's say an eighthnote instead of a quarter note apply itwhat that's saying now is that when Ichoose these notes up on topI can choose notes up to an eighth noteand larger I can go with the eighth noteand I can go to the quarter note eitherhalf note hold on any of these but Ican't put it you know 16th notes or the64th notes or any of these 32nd notesany of these other smaller incrementsbecause the display quantitized won'tallow me to show it in there actually itdoes kind of still write it in but it'sconfusing because you can't see it pickthe half note up here on the toolbar andnow if I click down hereit allows me to add that note in as ahalf note but I can't do anything smallif I click any of these other notes it'sjust going to ignore it so as I've saidbefore and I'm going to kind of give youexercises as I go along with thisbecause there's some things I just don'tthink they're explained well enough orlaid out well enough and if I can giveyou some Hands-On things to try they'regonna develop your skills and one ofthose things I'm going to recommend isget a single quarter note like I haveright here anywhere in your score justget one measure with one little quarternote and go back to your settings andget bring that up for a minute go intoyour display quantize and spin that upto where the notes say 64 all the way upto 64 and take your rests up to 16 andthen hit applyif you have a score open like I do it'sprobably going to turn into somethingreally crazy in terms of all the detailon the screen but hopefully the thingwhere you have your one quarter notelike I have right here make sure that'shighlighted and then go up into the infoline and there's an option here thatsays length and the second decimal pointover here put your mouse over thatthat's going to allow you to see some ofthe detail when you change this as youspin your mouse watch your quarter noteI'm spinning it and you will see itchange to all the different possiblelengths that it can be within that barand the rest will change as they go upand to the point where it finallybecomes let me get it right here towhere it's finally a whole note andtakes the whole length of the bar if Ispin it one more time it'll actuallyextend into the next bar and we don'tneed to do that for now just forobservational sake if you can look athow that changes the length of your noteand begin studying that if you justspend a few minutes spinning through allthose options I really believe that willgive you some perspective on what thenote values and how they change as youchange the length on them which in turnwill help you understand some of thethings I talk about as we go along heresome things that kind of go withoutsaying but we'll just review them hereup on the toolbar you have your snappingoptions in this case it says Grid orgrid relativeand this is going to have an effect asto how your notes move obviously if Ihave it set to an eighth note and I havea set to grid as I move this note alongdown here it's going to move on everyeighth notewe've already mentioned that there's alittle speaker up here the acousticfeedback so if you want to hear thenotes change as you move them you'llwant the acoustic feedback on on theother hand if that bothers you and youjust want to move the notes turn thatoff in the last video we talked aboutthe layers option you have this locklayers drop down and you have all thesebuttons that show the different layersif you're ever grabbing a note and itdoesn't seem to be responding you maywant to check and make sure you're onthe right layer or you have the locklayer selected the way you want it youdo have an option if you make sure thatnothing is selected but you move theirbar at the staff that you want make surethat's the selected staff you want towork with but again you make sure noneof the notes are selected then you doalso have an option to show your displayquantize over on the properties there'sa little drop down that says displayquantize and it gives you most of theoptions that we had in the settings it'sa good way to get quickly from eighthnotes to say 16th notes or 64th notesquick but this depends again I'm makingsure that nothing is selected in yourstaff because the minute you click anote those properties will show up andyou won't even see thatthey actually have some recommendedsettings when you're first starting outso I'm just going to go through themreal quick when you open up yoursettings and you go to the staff and themain tabit recommends that you leave this Autoquantize on the syncopation off and allthese other options unchecked and we'llgo through these as they come up so youcan see the difference the autocleff offthen the options just leave that exactlylike it isthe Polyphonic area leave the staff assingle and the tablature tab just leaveit deactivated or off it says in thedisplay quantize to leave everything at64. I think that will drive youcompletely nuts so I would leave it likeI have it here at quarter note for eachone of these hit apply that will keepyour score looking clean but then if youwant to jump up to where it's 64th notesgo over to your display quantize in theproperties and just go down to the lastoption of 64th notes and rests and thenyou can you know have that optionimmediatelyand then immediately you can hit thatdrop down and go right back to eighthnotes again and then we're going to wrapit up right there as usual if youhaven't grabbed your navigation guide besure to grab that before you go links toall the content on this channel evergrowing free to use all the videos arein order by subjectit's going to be the new alternative tohaving to look in the manual so thebiggest takeaway today is use your toolson your mouse to set the note selectionarea you know that node input and putnotes into your staff and delete notesout of your staff bump your displayquantize up to 64th notes and use thelinks up on the info bar to kind of spinthrough with your mouse the differentlinks of the notes those are thehighlights that if you want to takecommand of this video those are thethings you want to be able to do easilyas we continue to move along and becomemasters of the scoreas always great to have you guys hereand I'll see you on the next video
