today we talk about

Score Editor Layers in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's talkabout score editor layers in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so it turns out that all theelements in the score are on layersand there's a note layer and a layoutlayer and a project layer and all thesenotes and symbols time signatures clefsall the things that we have are on somekind of layer and the picture I'mgetting so far that basically the theadvantage of these layers is well forexample if you look at the score I havehere and let's say I have a node hereand I have these rests and really thebar lines all of everything you see herethe name of the track where it says warmpad all of these various things areelements in the score they can all bechanged in some way sometimes you knowyou're trying to get to certain thingslike let's say I want to get some ofthese notes and when I select them Iselect the bar line in the middle andmaybe I don't want to select the barlight in the middle because maybe Idon't want to affect that and so whatyou'll find is you're going through thescore and learning to navigate your wayaround that you want to get to someelements and other elements you kind ofwant to leave alone and when you'redragging your mouse around or you'reclicking things sometimes just becausethe graphic nature of it there's acertain challenge to it on the otherhand if you're able to identify some ofthese things and get them on theirrespective layers or isolate thoselayers for example let's say I havethese again these notes let's say I canget these notes onto one layer but thebars I have on a different layer thatway when I try to select the notes thebars aren't going to be affected in away it kind of helps you you know knowget to things without affecting otherthings so as we go through this more andmore I'm going to try to actually giveyou you know some exercises you know thebest I can because again this thissubject can be somewhat vague and youknow hard to get a hold of on some ofthese elements so if I give you theselittle exercises you know and you try todo them step by step we will close in onmastering this stuff so in light of thatthe first thing I'm going to tell you todo is when you look at the score andanother thing if you don't have a scoreto work on as you're watching thesevideos I'd recommend that you createsome little eight bar phrase just like Ihave maybe something with chords andmaybe a little lead line on it somethingdon't you know I wouldn't take out youknow Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and tryto do it here or anything not in thebeginning phases but just maybe a fouror eight bar phrase and then you know asyou work on it things are going to comeinto focus a lot more for you and infact you know if it would be if any anybenefit I'm actually thinking of 5finding a way to maybe put my tracks youknow out there or online or somewhereyou can download them if you know ifanybody thinks that would be valuable toyou maybe let me know in the comment youknow and I'll consider doing that butanyway the first thing I'm going to sayto do if you're assuming you have somekind of music in front of you on a scorego up onto this toolbar up on top andover in the right area you can see Ihave this little area here that hasthese lit up numbers one two three theletter L the letter P the letter c thisis the first thing you want to get ahandle on I'm going to give you a littleexercise to mess with to kind of getinto it these are kind of the buttonsthat get you to the layers and as youclick on let's say if I click on numberone it will turn that layer on and offsee as I click on it it turns on and offand you can see something Grays out ordisappears on the score when I do it ifI go to the number two and I click on itsame thing it dims you may or may notsee anything change depending on if youhave stuff on that layer but these arethe various layers and then there's alayer three if you click on that turn iton and off and then next to that youhave this L and that stands for thelayout layer if you click that on or offand then you have the project layer thathas the letter P for project on it youclick that on or off then this last onewith the letter C stands for colorizethe layer this allows you to see yourlayers in different colors if you goback to the left of all these buttonsthe one two three and the L and suchthere's an a button and that toggles allthe layers if you hit that everythingwill turn off and then at the same timeit'll turn them back on again soexercise one find this layer toolbar uphere hit the letter A to toggle it onand off and then when they're on hiteach layer on and off just to get a feelfor that and observe what happens toyour score when you do it and go througheach one of them the number to thenumber three and the L and the p and theC now the next thing to get a grip onand understand typically these layers ofone two and three are kind of related toeach other and this is pretty much wherethe nose go on layer one two or threefor example if you go over onto the tabsover here in the symbol area here wherethe symbols and go down Midway there'san option that says note symbols if Iclick on that and expands it and you getthis whole bunch of graphic things butif I take this very first one forexample and I right click on it I'mgoing to get a little context pop-upmenu and it's going to say insert intothe note layer or it'll show you otheroptions if they're available in thiscase it says insert in a project layerbut it's grayed out because you can'tput this into the project layer so youmay see options here but if they'regrayed out you just can't use them butyou see this thing the first thing itsays insert into the note layer so whatit's referring to is again if you clickon these in drum they're going into thisnote layer I want you to think aboutthis layer one two and three isbasically being a very creation of thesame thing you're going to be on layerone two or three so what I want you todo is go over it all the way to theright and there's a drop down arrowthere it says set up a score lock layersas you can see you have this whole listof various kinds of things and if youlook over on the right it says L1 L2 orL3 which stands for layer one layer twoand layer three and this is your firstoption to actually start moving thingsonto different layers so a great way toget some grip on this is toggle allthese layers off hit the letter A soeverything goes offthen hit the layer two we have thenumber two which stands for Layer TwoAnd if it's like mine most of the thingsare going to stay grayed out you're notgoing to see much on the score it's kindof there but it's you know ghost likeit's back in the background so to speakwhat that's telling you is all yourstuff is pretty much on some other layerand there's not really much on thislayer too so what you want to do is goto this drop down arrow click on thatand then one by one go down through thislist of stuff and the first thing saysbraces and click where it says L2 and ifyou don't see anything change just putit back to layer one go to the next oneit says bar numbers go to L2 and as youcan see on my score it's kind of againhard to see but the very first bar anumber nine showed up on the top of thescore so what that did is it broughtthat number nine from layer one to LayerTwo and now it's visible on Layer TwoAnd if you go through all of these justlike that you'll get some idea of whatthese elements are and how you can movethem I'm going to go to the third onesays staff names click on L2 here andnow it put in the names of my actualtracks the work piano and the warm padand I can see the those they've lit upso this is what you're going to want todo you're going to want to go througheach one of these and just see what kindof changes it makes go to the stems Ihave no stems so nothing happened putthat back go to clefs hit level two andnow you can see all my clefts showed upso again if I was working on the clefsand I needed to edit them and I didn'twant to touch the you know timesignature and the other notes by movingthese Cliffs onto layer 2 or even layerthree I've now isolated them so I canget to them easy and without you knowworrying about moving something I didn'tmean to move let's continue on I'm goingto uncheck that next one shows bar linesI'm going to put that on Layer Two andnow you can see all the bar lines havelit up on Layer Two here let's continueon the stabs hit that layer two nothingreally happened therethe note symbols that not too muchhappening so again if nothing changesyou just don't have those elements inyour score yet the slurs nothing reallyhappened there the note there's anobvious change to that now we have thenotes isolated on Layer Two and the lastone shows the rests so now let me showyou this so if we take that let's saythe rest we put that on Layer Two let'ssay I'm going to take the notes I'mgoing to put those on layer three now ifI close out of this and I go to the nextoption turn that up I'm going to go tothis last option that says colorize andI hit colorize you can now see that thenotes are one color they're kind of likethis off red but the time signaturethat's another color so what it's doneis it's taken the different layers andput them into different colors so ithelps you to again visually see them nowwhen it's in this colorize you stillcan't do any editing to do any editingyou'd have to find its particular layerand go to that so anyway there's yoursecond exercise the thing you want to dois hit this score set up lock layers andone by one go through these variouslayers and watch the different once whenyou change them so we have the initialnote layer symbols then if we talk aboutthese layout layers this kind of givesyou the option to make specific tracksin your project you know view a certainway and there's certain elements as youlook over back on the symbols tab thatcan go on the layout layer you'll eithersee it when you right click on it or youwon'tthe next thing to try to do is go up tothe scores tab up on the top here and godown to where it says page mode andclick on that typically again that's howyou're going to print things off that'swhat we'll begin to show you this layoutlayer now if I go to say the Dynamicsmapping and I click on that and then Iright click on one of these symbolsyou'll notice in the menu that you havethe option to see insert into the layoutlayer now if I go up and draw that overa certain note now if I toggle theselayers off and I hit this L for thelayout layer now only those symbols willshow up and then this last section saysI want to give you when you're lookingat your score go up to where it saysscores on the menu come down to where itsays your settings and then look throughthese tabs you got a project the layouta staff text look for the layout tab andmake sure that your track is selectedthat you know matches your project andyou will see your track names withdifferent little check marks by it ifyou hover over these it'll tell you whatthey are like this first one here saysshow the staff names for the staff sowhat you want to do with these say justlike we did with these lock elements uphere take one of these check marks anduncheck them and then hit your applybutton and watch what it does to yourscore and you will see various elementsappear and disappear and then put itback in maybe hit the check mark andapply it but learn how you can removeand add your various elements this waythrough the layout tab so if you dothose first three exercises go up toyour toggle of your layers turn those onand off go through your variousdifferent layers turning those on andoff so you can see what happensunderstand that you have a note layer alayout layer and a project layer andthat when you go over to these symbolsand click on them and right click onthem you will now see that it saysinsert into note layer or layout layeror project layer and now you have someidea of what that's referring to and thelast thing go up to your scores and turnthe page mode on or off and look againat what the various layers are thatappear when you do that if you can doall that stuff you're going to have agood handle on what the layer concept isall aboutand that's a wrap for today as usual ifyou haven't grabbed your navigationguide be sure to grab that before you gothere's links to all the content on thischannel ever growing and free to use allthese subjects are listed in order soyou can find it when you want to findthem and it's there for your benefit andit's there for my benefit all right sowe are making progress as we movethrough the score little by little theMysteries will be revealed there'sdefinitely a lot here but if we approachit with exercises and steps one twothree before you know it we're all goingto know how to use this thing likeprofessionals I can tell you it's reallya fun thing to use once you startgetting the handle on it and it'sprobably a complete total mystery if youdon't have a handle on it but we're hereto fix all those kind of issues and makeeverything in our program and Cubase andthe other programs that we work with nolonger a mystery if you want to dosomething you're going to have theability whether you use it today orsometime down the road all right asalways great to have you guys here I'llsee you on the next
