Score Editor Basics V3 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from Thedigitalaudiomanual.com Today we'removing on to our third video as wediscuss the score editor in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wave lab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged it's really anything updated andonce you have it you will always havethe latest information constantlyupdated so if you haven't gotten italready go to the link below click on itand save it to your favorites it's mygift to you and it's absolutely freeOkay so let's get started so we're onour third video now with the scoreeditor and as usual all previous videosare in the navigation guide in the linkbelow but let's start out first of all Iwant to show you some things aboutadding and erasing stuff in this scorewe discussed in one of the previousvideos that you can open up these youknow same thing as the project theseleft zones and right zones and when youopen up this one on the left you getthis symbols tab which contains just allkinds of stuff and you basically cansimply click on something and then drawit right into your score and that'ssomething I'm going to recommend thatyou start doing right away because itopens up a lot of comprehension as towhat's really happening in your scoreand gives you some feeling of controlright awayfor example let's go down to the onethat says clefs down here and you cansee you've got all these various kindsof clefs I'm going to click on thisthird one which is what's known as abass clef again even if you don't knowthings about score you can just think ofthis right now as a drawing program soI'm going to click on that and as Ibring it into the score my pointer turnsinto a pencil and if I move into somearea and I clickthen it draws that item that I justpicked out of the symbols Tab and putsit in place now it will affect the waythe score looks after you've drawn thatin you know everything changes as as youprogress through the score but whatyou're trying to do right now is justget a handle on how to put items intothis score and very importantly know howto get them out of there because there'ssome things I've discovered already thatI'm not going to say are necessarilypitfalls but they're easily confusedyou'll get easily confused if you don'tknow how you've drawn something in orthere's something in here that'sbasically affecting the rest of thescore it may be a way you don't want itto and if you know how to erase that orget it out of there your life will bebetter when you're working with thisthing so for example this thing I justdrew in this bass clef if I right clicknow and get my little toolbar then Ihave the option to pick the erase tooljust like normal in Cubase and then Ican click right over that and erase itand I'm going to recommend that youspend a little time with this symbolstab I would say with these first threeitems these ones that say the keys andthe clef and the time signatures andwe're going to look at all these alittle more detail in a minute here butjust taking these and clicking on any ofthem doesn't really matter if youunderstand what they are you don't needto know what necessarily the key of Aflat major you know and all the flatsmean at this point but if you know howto click on the symbol thing here andthen you go into your score with alittle pencil and anywhere you want todraw it and click on it you will see theeffect of adding an A flat major keyinto your score but then like I saidmore importantly is knowing how to go tothe erase tool and then clicking on thatsame thing and erasing it if you canstart getting those moves down you'regoing to start getting a handle on thispretty early on another thing to keepyour eye out for and be aware of noticeat the beginning of this particularstaff down here there's this blue barand if I move up to the top up here andI click that blue bar moves up here thatstands for the active staffand a lot of times some of the thingsyou're going to try to edit and doyou'll have to make sure that you selectan active staff before you do it or youmay not be able to actually do it you'llsee some of these things as you go alongyou know when you make an edit onsomething if that thing is notparticularly the act of Staff you maynot even be able to change something orsomething you do may not happen the wayyou expect usually typically anytime youhit a note in the staff this thingautomatically switches over to being theactive staff and if I go to a differentone and I click on it then this alsobecomes the active staff but just beaware that that blue bar there that'swhat that stands for it's telling youthat's the act of Staff now let's goahead and draw a key signature in herejust for the heck of a now the key of Gmajor is a simple key it has one sharpso I've been using that for most of myexperiments I just click here and noticeit drew in this one sharp now noticethat it has drawn that sharp on all ofthe staffs it's here it's on the onebelow it it's on the one below it thereand the one below it there and we'vekind of taught talked about this but Iwant to show you something a little moredetail in regards to how your changesaffect the whole song just like overhere on the left we have the symbols tabon the right we have this propertieswhich again is activated by The Zone uphere if I click on this sharp that I'vejust drawn in and again we've talkedabout this but we're going a little bitdeeper here you get you know all theother choices that you can makeso for example I have this one sharp butif I go over here I have pictures forall these Sharps which are the variousKeys you know D and a and you don't needto know that but that's what all thesestand for and as you change them yoursong will change in real time to reflectwhatever you've clicked over here butI'm going to stay on the one here butwhat I want to show you and we've talkedabout this but I want to show you oneextra thing below it you have thischeckbox that says Global keys and whenyou check this or uncheck this this issaying you have the ability to you knowwhatever changes you make are going toreflect the whole song you may recallwe've talked about that in a differentarea and I'm going to show you that whenI uncheck This Global keys this is theimportant thing I want to get across toyou the universal you know uh everythingbeing the same goes away in other wordsnow I can put a key signature at the topwhich in this case has one little flatand the one below it has three flats andthese stats below it have no flats orany kind of markings everything can beindependent and be whatever you wantthere are times when you're going towant to to do that but typically you'renot going to want to do that and you'regoing to want to be aware that you knowthat choice is what governs that so youwant to leave this Global key thingchecked on unless you know specificallyyou want to you want to draw theseindependent key signatures in here soI'm going to turn that back on I hit thelittle Global check and now everythinglines up and everything's the same andif I make a change it's the samethroughout my score now I showed you ina previous video when you go back up tothe scores this is the important thing Iwant to get across to you again and yougo down to settings and you go over tothis project Tab and then you look inthe notation style which is what's hereon the left this list we talked aboutthis as you go down into the key area itsays key changes for the entire projectand it has a check box here which if Iuncheck it it has the same exact effectas that Global key thing does and infact there's three choices here the keychange for the entire project warningsfor new keys and the show Naturals andthere's three check marks here and thatis the same three check marks that showup when you hit the properties and youlook over here in this properties areaso the point I'm making here is thatyou're going to see as you go throughthe score in various specific areaslittle choices like this where like thishere it tells the globals and thewarnings all this stuff whereas whathappens up here in the scores in thesettings and then in this project tab itkind of takes all these little uniquelittle things and puts them into onelong list and that's what this thing ishere so when you make a change in thislist it gets reflected over here as welland if I make a change here it getsreflected here so if I uncheck ThisGlobal key thing here and I come backhere and I refresh this list or open itup again I'm going to see this on checkas well it's going to it's going toreflect the same thing so this is kindof like a master list that haseverything in it and then you're goingto see the little specific things indifferent pages as you go so I just wantto get that across you might want toobserve that and take a minute toobserve it yourself so I'm going toclose that out but like I said keep inmind that when you have Global keys onyour score changes on all the staffs andwhen you turn this Global keys off youcan put you know things wherever youwant them now this is something I wantedto share with you because this is one ofthe first snags I hit that was veryconfusing and I finally figured it outand I want to show this to you all thekeys in music have these little thingsthey're called accidentals these Sharpsand these Flats except the key of C thekey of C just has nothing there so eventhough it shows nothing it representsthe key of C what happens sometimes isthe key of C just like this little sharpis written here the key of C is writtenon some of these other staffs and youdon't know it's there because wellthere's no accidentals to kind of alertyou to that and your score starts actingfunny and you can't figure out why letme give you an example this is whathappened to me so for example I'm goingto go back over to the keys I'm going tohit some other key here let's say B flatmajor and I'm going to draw it on thesecond bar here just click and draw itnow what happens is it puts another keysignature down the line here a littlebit so we started out with this onesharp and it's kind of moving down nowwe got these two flats and it moves ondown and it affects everything thatcontinues out on the score and as itgoes down into the next steps those twoFlats remain and they continue on wellwhat happens and this is what happenedto me if I go back and I hit like Cmajor which basically has no sharps orflats and I click this key signatureit's going to change it now now whathappens is whenever I change my originalkey signature I'm gonna go over in hereclick some of these symbols on the rightthey're changingbut look at the staff Below on the verybottom it's not changing at all and Ihave my Global key thing checked and I'mlike well what's the difference you knowwhy can't I get it to change I'mthinking it's a glitch in the programand I'm restarting the programwhat's happening is three bars down thekey of C is written in here and it'sadding all these other uh natural signsto cancel out whatever I draw the bottomline is what I'm trying to say is thatwith the key of C drawn in here yourglobal settings don't work anymorebecause there's another like roadblockhere and that affects what you see downthe line so what you're going to want todo again click and find your eraser tooland when you're first getting into thisand drawing your key signatures if youdon't see everything change all the waythrough the score it's probably becauseyou have some key signature down theline in some other bar that's blockingit and if you take your eraser and clickon it get that out of there your scoreshould then reflect whatever you have inthe beginning you should also see on allthe other staffs so again what I'm goingto recommend is an exercise in thebeginning here for those that aregetting into this and they're interestedwith it spend some time just drawing anderasing your key signatures in here itdoesn't matter what I'm going to go to Cflat major draw that in here maybe I'llgo to F major draw that in a couple barsdown the line here and maybe go to amajor draw that down to the bottombasically just having fun of it with itlike a drawing program now doing theexact opposite going and finding myEraser tool and then clicking on thesekey signatures and erasing them andgetting them out of there even towardsthe beginning if I want if you learn todo that you know spend a minute or sodoing it you will Gain real control interms of what you're seeing and probablynot have so many Surprises with whatyou're dealing with let's go ahead andput the G major signature back in hereagain now once you've drawn these thingsin here you've got a couple of ways toexamine them further like we said if Iclick on it and I'm dealing with the keysignature now the sharp here one way isyou can look over on the properties andchange it with every any way you wantyou click on these little pictures youchange it however you want another wayto change it is you double click on itand then you have an option right thereand you you move the scroll bar on theright you can use your mouse or justdrag it and you can change your keysignature that way so you have those twoways of kind of like quickly changingthings if you need to I must admit Ireally like this properties in becauseyou see things change in real time andit's just a really quick way to dothings now another thing to be aware ofwhen we first set up the score I thinkit was back in the video one we talkedabout the display transpose meaning thatyou know if your notes are way off thestaff and their way down on Ledger lineslet's go back and find that a minutethat was back under scores and settingsand the staff Tab and then if I lookdown here in the bottom corner and itdepends on the track I have I had it onthe second track notice when I changethese tracks the active track and thescore changes we talked about that justa minute ago but if I look down here onthe right I have this semitone set up toa 12 of an octave above meaning thedisplay transpose is showing that thesenotes are way up an octave above wherethey normally would be at any time ifyou're messing with your score and youwant to see things at What's called theconcert pitch meaning where it wasoriginally before you did something likethat where you changed the display youactually have a button way up on thetoolbar up on top here in the middleblade transpose is button enough I clickon that everything gives you the pictureof what it was originally in case youwant to actually see that now you cansee how my notes have dropped way downlow again so you have the option to turnyour display transpose visually on andoff and that's convenient and comes inhandy for things when you want to printthis off and we talked about you knowyou can print it up but if you want toprint it off switch things over back toyour scores again go back to go to theoption that says page mode this is whatit looks like if it's going to getprinted off and then you have an optionin Cubase where you can actually go upto fileand then down and there's an option thatsays print and you can actually print itoff right there now another thing that'sfunny is that besides printing these youcan actually export these scores as youknow pictures you know whatever a JPEGor whatever you want to do like that ifyou go up to file and down to yourexport and then you have an option inthe export at the bottom this has scoresand at that point you know your Explorerwhatever you have opens up and you cangive it a name but right below it it hassave as type and in this case it givesit a as a bitmap but you have a list ofall kinds of options you want to save itas a you know a JPEG or anything likethat you can change it to whatever youwant and then actually print this off asa pitcher and then what's even moreamazing than that is you can takesections of this score you just want acouple bars to print off for somethingif you go up and get your range toolwhich normally you use your range toolin the project you click on that I cannow drag over just any specific areamaybe just a couple bars here that Iwant and then if I do the same thing Igo up to my file and I go down to exportand I go down to scores I can do thesame thing give it a name pick file typethat I want but then it will print offas a picture just those couple of barsso if you you know if you need somethingas a graphic or you want to givesomebody just a certain vocal part thatyou worked on that's a real interestingand convenient option all right it'sgoing to wrap it up for today as alwaysif you haven't grabbed your navigationguide be sure to grab that before you golinks to all the content on the channelever growing free to useit's there for you to use today or sixmonths from today whenever you need toget an answer quick to something you'researching for so the takeaway fromtoday's video if I can tell you is makeuse of the symbols tab on the left clickand draw in some symbols and then useyour eraser tool and erase those symbolsand get used to doing that and you'll bekind of like where you need to be forwhere we're at I was working on a songthe other day and I used the score tobring up the melody that I was singingand to be able to see the melody youknow when I'm working on my vocal partoh it was it was so fun that's all I cantell you it was just fun and if I couldpass something along to any of you thatis one of the huge benefits of learningto understand this stuff when you cansit down and it comes to you that youknow what you're doing and you have youknow command of the program you're goingto have fun and that's a benefit that'shard to place value on it's it's so bigand that's it as always it's great tohave you guys here I'll see you on thenext video
