Score Editor Basics V2 in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we're goingto move on to our second video as wediscuss score editor basics in Cubasebut before we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wave lab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime and videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on this secondvideo in the world of the score previousvideo in the navigation guide below asare all the videos on this channel butlet's start off today talking about howto change the clef key and the timesignature if you have these things inthe score already if there's clefswritten in the score you can doubleclick on it and you will get a littledialog that allows you to change theclef you can grab this little bar on theside and change it or you can just holdyour mouse Over the Bar and spin it andit will give you all the variousdifferent kinds of clefs you may want touse if you find one you like you hit OKand off you go now there's a key optionhere but it's not showing up yet we'lltalk about that in a second if we moveon to the time signature 4 4 and wedouble click on that same thing you canchange the time signature hit OK and offyou go now as far as the key goesbecause we don't have the key let's putone in so if we go up to scores and downto our settings in the staff tab in themain tab over on the right there's acleft key window you can drag the littlebar to choose a different key or you canhold your mouse over it and spin themouse wheel when you find something youlike just hit apply close the screen outof here then once the key signature isin the score if you wanted to change itat that point then you could doubleclick on it and it would give you theoption to make adjustments right thereif you wanted hit OK and you can changeit as you need it so let's look at thistime signature a little closer we havesome really interesting options on thisif I double click on the 4 4 time youget these options for more than onenumeratorand this gets into things when you haveseven eight time or who knows what allkinds of weird times but you want tobreak them down into smaller incrementsbecause when you're using the bar linesand things like that tying off variousnotes if you leave it like at 11 8 orwhatever the crazy thing is you need todo you may not get the groupings thatyou want to get so you can set up thingslike for example let me do one I'm goingto go with three and then maybe two andthen another two that's good enough hitokay and this is strictly for examplehas nothing to do with the score becauseit turned the score into something justtotally crazy but if you look up now atthe time signature it says three plustwo plus two well on most scores you'renot going to see something like that soif I double click on this again I have alittle check box that says for groupingonly and if I hit that now it displaysthe way a score would typically showseven four if that's what it was withthis crazy score after but if you needto actually see things and you're makingthe groupings that you want to see youknow you have that option to uncheckthat and actually see what you'redealing with in the time signature andthen this next thing you're definitelygoing to want to play with because it isreally fun just to watch the differenceif I have the score and I go back up tomy menu for scores come down to mysettings if I go to the first tab whichsays project I have a bunch ofselections here I can make but the firstone up here says the font settings andyou just have all kinds of options andyou just want to experiment and look atthe difference because it is just fun tosee at the first drop down you have thescore font so if I switch that to Legacyand then I hit apply the Jazz one isgoing to give you some really neat lookslook what it did to the clef reallyartsy Jazzy looking the biburo fromdorico get that onethe last one look at that I mean itreminds me of a fake book I used to ownand then you can get into the details ofany of these things and say I want tomess with the time signature itself if Icome down here there's a font option itsays font four and I can just pick whatI want so in there I got the bar and thestaff and whatever and I go to timesignature and then I have an option forall kinds of fonts I want to try let'stry this High lower test hit applymade it with a little tiny thing I wantto change the size and I can go down toherechange that up to 18 hit applyso you could spend a good long time justlooking at all the little fonts andthings they've had in here you can justspin your mouse wheel on them sometimesand just get weird you know combinationshit apply you know you get all theseways that the score can look and thenthe great thing is once you've totallydestroyed it or you don't know whatyou've done you have an option righthere to hit default you hit the defaulthit apply and everything goes right backto normal again okay now looking at thescore the actual editor notice this inthe editor window itself you actuallyhave zones just like you do in theproject window for example notice uphere in the right corner I can actuallyclick and remove the left Zoneor the right zone or I can actually justhit this arrow and open this thing up inthe lower Zone in the project window ifI want to use it over here on the leftside you have this enormous amount ofinformation in little tabsand we'll experiment with some of thestuff in more detail as we go but forexample most of this stuff can be justclicked and dragged and written like ifI go up to this Keys Tab and I open itup it gives me this block of informationwhich is basically all the keys andlet's say I go to the C flat major and Iclick on it now when I go over into myactual score I click it writes that keysignature in place it doesn't stop thereI can actually take any of these keysand then go anywhere I want in the scoreand click it and it will write anotherkey signature in and I can just fill inwhatever I want as you go down the listthere's things like the Dynamics mappinglet's say I want it to be mezzo Forte orpianissimo or Forte or whatever let metake the little p symbol and hit thatand I can take that into the score let'ssay over this note here and hit it andit will draw that little p there to showme that I got to play the notes soft butthen I can take the note click on it anddrag it to fine tune it if I want tomove it someplace else for you knowvisibility options I can right clickselect my erase tool and erase it sothere's lots of things to experimentwith there just to get you know startedif you want to just click and startdrawing things in on the other hand ifyou go over up in this right Zone againand hit the right Zone actually turningit on now when you click on certainthings like if I click on the clef hereit actually opens up a properties overhere on the right which allows me toquickly click through any number ofclefs and see immediately what kind ofresult it'll havetotally changes the score around bassclef and all those different optionssame thing applies if I have the keysignature I can click on that and goover into the properties and then I canimmediately just change it to whatever Iwant here as well giving me all kinds ofquick options and everything updates inreal time in the score and I can see itimmediately what I'm doing all right solet's go over just a couple more thingshere first of all the clef typicallywhenever you change it on an instrumentit should change for all that instrumentwherever it is for example thisinstrument here my piano at the top clefhere is also the top of the next linedown here and if I were to change thatclef let's say go over to the right Zoneagain and I make it some bass clef itshould also change to a bass clef on thetop part below it I had a few timeswhere it didn't and I realized that wasjust the program kind of glitching outso if something doesn't happen like thatrestart Cubase and try again on theother hand when it comes to your key Simsignatures that may or may not changedepending on a preference that you haveset up and you might want to know thatso let me show you what I found outabout this so again in this song I haveI just have two instruments I have thispiano and I have this pad so if I goover my key signature area over here onthe left again let's say I take this keyof G major and I click on it now I cancome over here and right next to theclef and click on it and as we look atit it changed and put the G signaturekey signature sharp F sharp here on thefirst line and put it on the second linebut as I go down into the next area it'snot here and it's not on the next oneafter that and there's actually apreference that rules over that let meshow you I'm going to go back and removethis key soon temporarily go over in theright Zone hit this C majorstaff so if I go back up to my scoresand I come down to settings againthere's a tab in here in the beginningthat says the project if we go down notto font settings but to the notationstyle and then go over to the rightthere's an option here that says keysand there's an option below that thatsays the key changes for the entireproject and for you that may or may notbe checked for me it is not checkedright now so if I check that and then Ihit applynow whenever I change the key signatureit changes for all the different staffsand for me personally that's pretty muchimportant you know sometimes you do wantto be able to change different keys ondifferent stabs and you'll do thingslike that but typically for me if I have30 tracks in my project they're prettymuch all going to be in the same key andif I have to manually add a keysignature on every single one of thosetracks well that's a rather tediousoperation so if I change the keysignature on one of my tracks I wouldlike it to change on all of my tracksautomatically so that preference isdefinitely an important option to beaware ofand that's going to wrap it up for todayas usual if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatbefore you go links to all the contenton the channel ever growing free to useit's in the link below the video soclick on that and download it to yourfavorites makes your life a whole loteasier when you're trying to find thecontent on this channel so as wecontinue to move through the score Imean this is a heck of a subject I knowand if you don't know about scores ormusic you may be going what are we doingbut and then again on the other hand youmay be completely fascinated by it Ihave found this thing to be veryfascinating and especially when we startgetting into putting in lyrics and youknow creating some things like that Ithink you're going to really enjoy itbut you have to learn it a little bit ofthe time because there's so much hereyou know and that's what we're doing ifyou haven't messed with it you knowcheck out the left Zone the right Zoneclick on some of these objects in heredraw them into your score see how theproperties affect over on the right Zoneeven if you know nothing about notationyou may find yourself yourselffascinated by playing with it and younever know you may learn something inthe process all right as always it'sgreat to have you guys here I'll see youin the next video
