Rendering Audio and MIDI in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigital audiom manual.com today let'stalk about rendering our audio and midiin Cubase but before we start I want toremind you that there's a link below tothe content navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate web page with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there if you're working withprograms like wave laab or qbas pluginsor the cable gu shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youokay so let's get started so thisfeature has been around for a littlewhile now the option to be able torender your audio or your midi todifferent tracks basic concept before webreak it down let's say I have a miditrack like I do here this base midi andI want to make it into audio if I selectthe track go up to edit come down torender in place I have two options goahead and just render it and we have onethat says render settings so I'm goingto go to render settings this is where Ican make some changes but if I like myoptions I just go ahead and hitrender and in a few seconds along withthe original track I now have a renderedaudio of that midi I could disable myoriginal midi track I could remove itwhatever I want but now I have a newaudio track in its place so let's talkabout the fine details of this firstthing you want to understand is that youhave the option to render your track oryou can select events and actually youcan select pieces of the events let'sfocus on the tracks or the events if Ihit a track and I go back up to editdown to render in place and my rendersettings I'm going to get a number ofchoices specifically in these areaswhere there's drop down lists that I canfollow and then render but if I hit theevent and then do the same thing goingto edit render in place and the rendersettings I have something that lookssimilar but if I explore my drop- downlist and the choices that I'm giventhey're going to be completely differentso you want to be aware are youselecting an event or are you selectinga track okay so the first thing we wantto look at as we're looking at ourrendering screen we have a section herethat says mode and a drop- down list inthe drop- down list we have threechoicesas one event as blog events and asseparate events start with this bottomChoice as one event because it's themost obvious and what it does let meclose this out as one event if I takeany one of these tracks or even boththese tracks and do this render you cansee I have three different events when Ido therender it then combines all three ofthose events into one long event here'sthe original three events above it andhere's the new rendered event below ityou can see there's data on this partsilence in this area data here silencehere combined all three of these intoone long event if I go to this nextchoice moving up as Block events selectthat and do arender it then did three separaterenders maintaining the exact same Clipsso now there's no rendering of thesilence in between if I then go to thislast option says at separate events do arender again it makes three separaterenders ignoring the spaces in betweenso what's the difference between thefirst two choices as separate events andas Block events and the honest answer tothat question is there is no differenceon my system this may be a bug or aglitch but let me show you what I'veuncovered in terms of what rules dogovern this I believe in theory and Ithink I've even seen it on earlierversions when things worked differentlyif I have two events that are right nextto each other or in some kind of closeproximity when we take make the choicethat says as Block events what it'ssupposed to do is make one event out ofthese two and a separate one out ofthese whereas when we go with the optionthat says as separate events no matterwhat it should always create threeseparate events you'll have to checkthis on your system and see if it worksthe same way or if it behaves the sameway mine does but let me show you how itdoes work on my system and the rulesthat govern this concerning separateevents or a block event as long as thetwo events are separated matter what Ido it's going to make three separateevents on the other hand if at any pointtwo events actually touch each othermeaning they go on from one measure tothe next measure at that point it willalways render these two as one event andrender this one as another event so asfar as our list goes here as long as wesay one event it's always going to makeone long track one event as far as asseparate events or Block events thesereally behave exactly the same and thedifference is whether your eventsactually touch each other or overlap orin some way come in contact with oneanother those will always be rendered asone event and the ones that have spacebetween them will also be rendered asits own event all right so next up wehave these four different options of howthe renders get processed our firstoption of dry if I go to a channel let'ssay I put a compressor on this channelyou can see it right here on the insertif I now go through a render with a drytransfer selection I get a new renderedfile and if I open that up I still havethe compressor and it's still alive andI can make changes to it if I take thatsame exact Channel with the compressorand this time I take the option thatsays the channel settings and I click onthat do the render again I get arendered track but when I open up thechannel compressor's gone because inthis render it actually baked thatcompressor right into the audio file wetake this piano part we send it to agroup and on the group we put a Reverbso it sounds likethis right now this channel is beingsent to the group go back up to ourrender in place and now we take thisthird option that says the completesignal path it's going to take theeffects from the track it's going totake the effects from the group going torender a new track it's going to putthose effects on this newtrack but now it's sending that trackdirectly to the stereo out and then ifwe go one step further let's say I go tomy stereo output put some other effecton the stereo output back at our rendersettings we now take this last optionthat says the complete signal path andthe master effects do a render it thenmakes another render track taking allthose effects from the group from themaster effects and sends it to the mainstereo out next up you have theseproperties that allow you to adjust thetail tail mode the tail size and thenbit depth tail mode you can turn it offyou can have seconds or bars and beatstail size you have four decimal placeshere anytime you see this these fourdecimal places it's the bar beat 16thand tick for example if I want two barson my tail size I go to this very firstnumber and spin it up to two if I renderthis my render now has a tail size of anextra two bars on it and your bids dropdown you can actually change the bid ifyou want you have the choices from 16 2432 or 64 float below that you have theoption to change the name of your renderif you want you click the little checkbox and you can put a name in here youwant your renders to go to someparticular place you can pick the folderand then you have these grade options towhat you do to your original tracks inthis case do you want to disable themlike I have here do you want to removethem do you want to mute them or youwant to leave them unchanged and thenyou have an additional check after You'performed your render to hide yourtracks if you want if you select allyour tracks and you choose any otheroption besides this dry transfer you'realso given an option to mix down to oneaudio file if I select that option andhit render are then sent to one FinalMixdown this is a good way to consolidatesome of your tracks when you need to orrun a quick test mix switching fromusing tracks to our events if I justtake these events highlight them do arender then I can get a mix of justthoseparts but one of those other littleamazing things you can actually justselect a range let's say I want one barright in the middle here through allthese different tracks and then if Irender that off get just that littlepiece one thing I would highly recommendif you're not already doing this is tocreate a shortcut for your render if yougo to edit down to your key commands goup to your little search area and typein render in hit enter and that'lllocate the area of your key commands forrender in place and you can make a keycommand for the actual rendering or forthe render settings I have one set upfor my render I created alt and R so forme anytime I want to render somethingit's as simple as selecting it and thenhitting alt and R just like that I havea render as you're using your render inplace it remembers whatever the lastthing is you did so once you go up toyour edit and to your render settingsand you make some choices here forexample let's say I take channelsettings tell it to mix it down to onetrack I tell it to disable all my sourcetracks the first time you want to goahead and do therender but then after that throughoutthe rest of your project anytime youmake that same move and again if youhave your shortcut key set up like I dohere and I just hit altR then that exact same render is doneevery time all right it's going to wrapit up for today as always if you haven'talready be sure to grab your copy of thedigital audio manual content navigationguide from the link below this videoit's the faster better way to learn andreview pick it up look it over all thedifferent topics that are gathered thereand then you too can get started on yourpath to a better way to learn all thisstuff today we talked about renderingour audio and midi we saw the differencebetween tracks and events when it comesto rendering we looked at how to renderthe tail and all the other options wetalked about some rendering shortcutsand then we saw that we could evenrender small selections if we want to aswe continue to move through all thefeatures and functions in qase as alwaysgreat to have you guys here and I'll seeyou on the nextvideo
