you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we move on to our fifthvideo as we continue discussingrecording options in Cubase and ofcourse all the previous videos are inthe navigation guide in the link belowand in our last video we left offtalking about selecting midi channelsand the effect it has we're going tostart off today looking at what happenswhen you select a different sound andagain this really can only happen withsomething like halyan like we have heresomething that Cubase has you know VSTcompatibility with and can do some ofthe things many times other third-partyinstruments won't even do any of thesethings but we looked at how we can setup the different instruments and thedifferent midi channels corresponding tothose instruments for example if I hitthis midi Channel or this or thisthey're all transmitting at differentmidi channels but by the same token if Igo back over here in the inspector andthere's an option here for programs andif I click on that this will actuallyopen up a browser media Bay type ofthing in Cubase and I can actually pickthe sounds that I want halian to play soif I go to this piano and I click on itimmediately that slot is populated withthat sound and then it will play thatsound all right let's start having alook at the midi record modes inprevious videos we looked at the audiorecord mode so let's look at the midirecord modes if you go down to thetransfer bar I'm going to use my presetto wipe all the options outand then I'm going to look up here forthe option that says midi record mode soI'm going to click on that and we get avery simple single button here but whenwe click on this button we get a hugeamount of options not so simple so let'sbegin exploring what do all these tellus so the first thing from this list toobserve is that things are broken downinto some kind of category and the firstcategory is when it's cycled and justregular linear recording the nextcategory applies just to the cycledrecordings and then at the bottomthere's one about quantizing so thefirst option says new parts let's lookat what that means this is in the areathat says linear and cycled now here'sthe problem the linear and the cyclethere's really a blurry line betweenwhich is which because really so manythings happen the same way and yetthey're different with a cycle so best Ican do is just give you some examples soto specify linear we're not going to doa cycle on these first examples so we'regoing to make sure that it doesn'trepeat meaning it's not going to Loopbackground and make multiple takes it'sjust going to start and go so in thissong there's three parts we've gotchords a bass and then a little pianopart and on the piano part let me playit real quick hereit's got this kind of lead piano partgoing and what's going to happen is I'mgoing to kind of play another littlelead part as it's moving into this partthat's already been recorded and whatwill happen is it'll record the new partand it'll kind of keep this old part asit gets here and kind of overdub anotherpart on it so watch thiswe'll start it from the beginning herewe goI'm playing thisnow the new part is going to keep goingand I'm playing over it[Music]so what it's done here is it created anew part that went all the way throughthese few bars here but if I hit thelane option here it kept the old partand then it kind of allowed you to hearboth parts when it got here so that wason the new part option now if we go tothe one that says merge close this outif I hit recordplay something[Music]it's writing over the other part[Music]and if I stop it so you can see what itdid is it created a new part as Istarted the song but when it got to thisexisting midi advantages through the newnotes right into it then create asecondary midi event up here and I'mgoing to control Z out of this removethis and then if we go to this lastoption that it gives us here replace atthis point it's not going to saveanything it's just going to create allnew so let's do this from the top herewe go[Music]approaching the recorded part[Music]as it was recording you may not havebeen able to see it in the video butthere was notes that were still showingin the background once I officiallystopped the recording those notes aregone now if I hit the lane optionthere's only one part here and the onlynotes that existed are the ones that Ijust played all right now let's move onto the cycle recording options go backto the new parts in the linear and thenwe keep mix in the midi cyclethen we get this kind of a thingit recorded the new part right over theold part and if I hit the lane optionhere we can see that it kept theoriginal part and it kept the fullversion of the new part let's control Zout of this let's take our next cycleoption where it says overwrite click onthat so what's happening here is everytime it does a new take on the cycle itoverwrites the existing take theprevious recording stays intact butevery take that goes through on the newrecording gets overwritten every timekeep last let's try this start recording[Music]so what it's doing here is it goesthrough a whole take and it records thattake and it begins to cycle back tostart another take but if you don'tfinish that take that take gets erasedand it only keeps the previous take sowhat it's doing when it says keep lastyou have to go through a full cycle andwhatever the last one you make in thatfull cycle that's the one it's going tokeeplet's move on to Stacked and let's dothese two bars here we go[Music]as you can see it does exactly that itkeeps stacking the takes one on top ofthe other and a mutes out every previoustake only the last one stays unmuted andthe last option says mixed stack with nomute so what it's going to do here it'sgoing to stack just like it did but it'snot going to mute the parts out let'stry it[Music]and everything I play gets played backand everything just keeps stacking it upnow in theory we could go back and wecould hit merge and go through all theseCycles again but at this point you getthe idea and I'm sure I can send you offto do your own experiments but sufficeit to say they have given us a lot ofchoices when it comes to MIDI recordinghere the last option to notice down hereit has one that says Auto quantize aslong as that is checked whatever thequantize value is like in this case I'vegot an eighth note up here going toautomatically correct my recording as Igo through it to an eighth note and mostof the time that's a great idea thething where you want to be careful withthe auto quantize if you knowspecifically you have a real-timeperformance that you want to captureyou'll definitely want to turn that offthe other thing is like things likeGroove agent sometimes where you candrag patterns in if you have this Autoquantize on and you drag a pattern infrom Groove agent this Auto quantizewill basically just wipe it out so ifyou ever find yourself dragging inpatterns and they don't seem to playcorrectly you might want to double checkyour Auto quantizes on or off so wetalked about in the audio recording howthere's a pre-record option catchesrecordings even when you haven't startedwell the midi has something similar tothat as well if we look at this trackand right now I'm stopped I'm notrecording anything and I'm at bar 35. ifI just go ahead and start playingsomethingbut if I by some chance I hit somethingthat I really wanted to keep and I waslike sorry that I didn't record it I cango over to this option that saysretrospective recording and click onthat and it says insert is linearrecording and if I hit that lo andbehold there's my recordingforeignbut you get the idea now if I removethis the same thing applies if I startcycling through thisand I do start playing something in time[Music]and same thing I go oh you know I wish Iwould have caught some of that wellguess what same thing if I go back overto retrospective now because I was in acycle I actually have two options I canput it in linear like I did or I canpick the option now this is in cycle soif I hit that it actually captured theCycles in the different Lanes[Music]that's an amazing feature right therenow just a little side note to that oneyou can set that as a preference as wellif you go up to edit down to yourpreferences you scroll down until youfind record there's a midi option whenyou click on that you have the option toset the retrospective buffer here andthis one is set in events so it's up toten thousand which basically works outto a little over two minutes give ortake depending on how much midi datayour instrument is sending one moreoption to show you real quick if I goback to the cycle recording and I playlike I just did[Music]this time instead of hitting theretrospective I actually just draw in amidi event here and then I double clickit to open it in one of the editors andthen I go up on my toolbar and make surethat I have the option for retrospectiverecord now if I click on that same thingas before it inserts that midi rightthere into the editor all right it'sgoing to wrap it up for today as usualif you haven't grabbed your navigationguide be sure to grab that from the linkbelow gives you access to all thecontent on this channel free evergrowing all the subjects are in orderand categorized and it's there to makeyour life and my life easier when weneed to learn something so that wraps upthe subject of recording in Cubase andtoday we kind of looked at selectingsounds and the midi record modes wetalked a little bit more about thelinear and the cycle options and thenspecifically into the cycle only whichgives us a lot of options and then weended off with the retrospectiverecording option so now there's a wholeseries of videos on recording so if youhave issues or you want to knowsomething more just investigate theprevious videos or this one and now wemove on to our next subjects and youknow there's always more to learn asalways it's great to have you guys hereand I'll see you on the next video
