Quantize Panel V1 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we're goingto have a look at the quantize panel inCubase but before we start I want toremind you that there's a link below tothe free content navigation guide whichis an easy to navigate webpage withlinks to all the content on this channeland besides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so the subject of quantizingis basically correcting the timing onyour audio or midi you can correcteither one of them typically it meanscorrecting something you may not haveplayed right exactly on time butsometimes it's also just being a littlecreative with the timing so we're goingto explore some of these options and forthis video we're going to focus in onthis quantized panel which displays alot of these options that we can get toso we're looking at this quantized panelright now I'm going to close it down andfor our discussion there's going to betwo ways to kind of get to it one way isup on the toolbar if you have a quantizedrop down up here kind of next to itthere's a little button with an e and itsays open the quantize panel if youclick on that then you're going to getthis panel to work on another option isto go right to your edit menu and thencome down there's an option that saysquantize panel either way works for whatwe need so the first thing to be awareof once you open up this panel is thatyou have a list of presets no big dealhere just your usual kind of thingsthere's Factory presets here you have atthe bottom the option to save or removeor rename the presets but the importantthing to understand here is that becauseyou can save presets that's the valuablething about this because you're going tosee as we go along how you can createspecific presets that may not be typicalcould be a Groove from a drum beat youhave but then you'll be able to use thatto quantize other things so you want totake a browse at your presets and getfamiliar with this list real quick theother thing is be careful you have abutton here that says save preset andremove preset and I have found out thehard way that if you sit here and clickthe remove preset Without Really seeinganything you basically just eliminateall of your presets here ones you'vesaved and ones that are in here storedfrom the factory just be careful beforeyou start clicking these buttons overhere on the right in fact I wouldrecommend if you have some presetsalready created that you take a minuteand go ahead and save those presetsbefore you start doing anything furtherwith what we're talking about here sothen you have the option to createwhat's called a Groove quantize this isa pretty magical option the Cubase givesyou because basically you can create anykind of GrooVe you want and then usethat to quantize so where you might havesomething like thisthat's on eighth notes and it's exactrobotically you can then use some kindof other instrument I'm just going touse a Tom mute on My Guitarand while this is playing I'm going tocreate a groove of my own[Music]ultimately in this case it's pretty muchlike the groove but it's got a littlebit of a human feel to it so once I havethat I'm going to open it up in thesample editorI'm going to go over the option thatsays hit points and then all I have todo is come down to the area that sayscreate and click on the option that saysGroove go ahead and close this panelback out and then lo and behold when Ilook at my panel I now have a new presetin this case I gave it the name of thetrack that I recorded it on which I cannow use to quantize all of my tracks nowit's a wise move at this point to goahead and save this preset another wayto do this is just close that panel andI can use my quantize up here in mytoolbar and just by selecting the tracksthat I want to quantize I can now hitthe little Q up here and just apply thisquantization to my tracks and now if Iplay thatthat's locked on to exactly what I didon the guitarif I go ahead and open up one of thesemidi partsand then maybe move this grid back to aneighth note you can see it's veryobvious that the notes are all over interms of the grid most of these notesare now slightly ahead of the griddefinitely more human type of feel to itand you can do this with any kind ofSwing pattern you use or really anythingthat you want to use to you knowquantize your material another greatthing about this option is instead oftrying to make the quantize of an eighthnote or maybe a swing feel of a tripleteighth note or any of the things youmight try to do and then struggle tryingto get your quantize to actually matchwhat you're trying to do by justcreating your own quantized feel youdon't have to worry about that then youcan apply that feel to all the differenttracks you want to use it on so with thequantize panel open you get some realvisuals on how things are going to getaffected and you have a lot of specificbuttons to arrange certain things soonce we get past the first drop down forour presets we have some buttons herethat say grid swing catch range and saferange if we go to the grid and I startspinning my mouse or I can click on itto see the display if you look below itand again maybe hard to see with thevideo you're going to see a grid changeand basically conform to whateverchanges I make here right now it's oneto one if I start spinning it down youcan see down here it's increasing interms of what's available on the gridand this is going to show you how nodesactually get quantized you can gothrough all your resolutions and see thedifference you'll also see the Grid inthe project reflected if you have youradapt to zoom selected so basically youjust go down through all these differentvariations gives you a real good idea ofwhat kind of resolution is happening I'mgoing to take it to the eighth noteoption if you go next to that to theswing you can start spinning that one upand as you do every second line in thegrid will start to move a little bit offof the grid to showing you that it'sgiving you a swing effect next to thatyou have this thing called The Catchrange and basically when you startspinning that it's telling you that thisis the only area where it's actuallygoing to grab notes and affect them andthat way it'll start to ignore are somenotes and leave you more of a human feelnext to that the safe range is just theopposite if you start spinning that oneyou get this red display and this istelling you that it's going to ignoreany notes in this area in other wordsnotes have to be outside of this area tobe affected now moving down you have acouple of options down here one saystuplet and one says rough and youbasically put your mouse over those andyou can spin them to change them eitherone of them but if you look at the toplip one basically what's going to happenis it just keeps dividing thensubdividing and subdividing into finerand finer increments so right now it'soff with eighth notes if I spin it downbasically I put a line between everyline that was already there if I spin itdown again then it does it again it putslines in between those lines and you cankeep dividing it until this is superfine again this is just ways that ifyour current quantize isn't catching youknow the Rhythm that you want you canjust keep making these subdivisions andmaybe you'll get it that way next tothat though it's real nice option ofthis rough selection here and what itdoes is it divides things into tick thebest way I can do this one is just giveyou an example so let's say I take ahi-hat up here in my drum pattern andI'm going to make them 16th note so I'mgoing to draw a bunch of 16th notes andhere I have it with exact 16th notesso if I go to this rough option it'll goall the way up to 48 ticks but a realgood option is just take it around 19 or20 and if you hit the quantize and whenI do this you want to look at thesevarious hi-hats and what it's going todo is kind of shuffle them so if I hitquantize let me zoom in a little bit seeif it's easier to see it what I'm goingto do is I'm going to hit the quantizeover and over and over again and you'regoing to see these guys kind of getshuffled around see that every time I'mhitting it it's getting a little bitdifferent of a shuffle and what is sowhat it's doing is it's saying betweenthese 19 ticks that I've decided downhere it's going to randomly move thesearound each one of these in that rangeof some way or another within 19 ticksnow I can spin this up even further andit would even randomize it more thattends to take it off the beat a bit butwith a variation right around that youcan bring some real life into thingslike hi-hats or anything that's like afast pattern like this without sittinghere and manually trying to drageverything around a little bit basicallyjust does a shuffle for you let's playiteverything is now slightly alteredaround the beat and if I want to changeit I can just keep hitting thisuntil I get a variation that I likejust a great little option and of courseremember if you hit something that youreally like you can always save it as apreset and then you can use it anothertime all right that's going to wrap itup for today as always if you haven'tgrabbed your navigation guide be sure tograb that from the link below gives youaccess to all the content on thischannel in order categorized it's thereto help you find what you're looking forfast and easy without struggling throughendless searches and endless frustrationjust look for the link below this videoclick on it save it to your favoritesand then use it whenever you need it sowe begin looking at the quantize panelthis thing is loaded with great optionsif you understand them we begin lookingat how to open the panel some of thebasic presets we had an example of howto create a Groove quantized preset andthen we got into some of the options inthe panel we saw the grid and the swingthe catch range and the safe range wherethe grid display is and how it showseverything and then we ended up lookingat the tuplet and the rough options alittle bit more to look at on the panelwe'll cover that next time but againjust so much you can do that you may ormay not even be aware of is available toyou as we continue to solve that problemso you will know what's available to youas always it's great to have you guyshere and I'll see you on the next video
