Playback and Transport V1 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigital audiom manual.com today let'sdiscuss playback and transport in qbasebut before we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the contentnavigation guide which is an easy tonavigate web page with links to all thecontent on this channel and besides thatin the near future I'm going to beginadding tips and other bits ofinformation that will only be availablethere if you're working with programslike wave laab or qbas plugins or thecable gu shaper box and many many anyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youokay so let's get started so the firstthing to talk about in the playback andtransport category is this transportpanel right here that I'm moving on thescreen bring this up into visibility youhave a category up in your menus theysay transport and you can hit that andit will either show it or hide it theshortcut key if you haven't changed itis just to hit F2 on your keyboard andthat brings it up as well now just forextra information because I've takenthis off of the shortcut key of F2 atvarious times and then had a hard timefiguring out how to get it back if yougo to edit key commands and look for thecategory or folder that says transportif you move down that list you'll seethe option that says panel and then youcan reassign F2 or any key you want tothat if you need it but if you have F2you can bring that panel in and out ofview most of the time I keep thetransport down here in this lower Zonearea for our demonstration we're goingto be using it in this movable bar so wecan check out some of its options so aswe start looking at the transport bar wehave various buttons the very far rightyou can hit a setup button which allowsyou to make controls visible or keepthem hidden if you right click anywhereyou have an option to show every buttonif you right click again you have theoption to reset all which kind of givesyou the default buttons but you can makeany visible configuration you want yourfirst option over here on the far leftis the audio performance meter basicallyjust as the song plays you can see howmuch CPU power is being used next buttonshows the common record modes thisbutton and the next few I'm going toshow you here they've all beendemonstrated in great detail and thesections called recording audio and midiso watch those videos for a realthorough description of all this stuffhave the audio record modes you have themidi record modes you have the option toturn auto quantize on or off you havethe option for your locators set thelocatorrange lock your punch points to yourlocators turn that off if you want toset different punch points than yourlocators the option to set a punch inand out Point again this was covered ingreat detail in the recording audio andmidi so one of the things you have towatch for on this transport bar is thatsome of your buttons may be hidden Asyou move along and see variousconfigurations you may see these threelittle dots there's one after thesetransport controls basically one afterevery little section here right now onthis transport control I got fourbuttons for the cycle for the stop forthe play and the record but if I grabwhere these three dots are and pull itto the right reveals that there's a fewother buttons here and you may not evenknow they're there if you don't expandthis so keep that in mind as you goalong so in this expanded view we havethe previous marker and the next markerthe re rewind and the forward nowmarkers require markers this rewind andforward if I hit this rewind button youlook at the cursor you see the cursormoves backwards and if I hit thisforward button cursor moves forwardthese are preassigned over on yournumber keypad the minus key which I'mhitting now and the plus key below ityou could change those by default that'show those work you have this activatecycle you look up here you can see it'skind of this bluish purple color if Ihit that turns that off this is how youset up a loop point the cycle button thestop button the play button then whenyou're ready to record the record buttonagain this one is typically assigned theasteris button up in your number Keys Ifyou hit that asteris you're going tostart recording if you hit it again it'sgoing to stop recording for any trackthat you have record enabled and thenyou have this little note that standsfor the primary time display if you hitthat you can show things in bars andbeats or seconds time code samplesframes these options are alwaysavailable up on the ruler itself if youright click along with some otheroptions and again we have an expansionbutton here if you change these timeformats next to the little note you seewhere the cursor is in whatever timedisplay you have selected if you changethat time display let's say to secondsthen that display will reflect that aswell you have the option to select asecondary time format say you want tokeep this one it bars and beats changethis next one to seconds then you canview both those displays at the sametime just like these first buttons kindof jump you around to the markers if youhave specific markers you can click onthis to get to them or it takes you tothe marker setup screen and once againright now it's only showing four markersif I expand this I can see up to eightmarkers and then you have the option forthe pre-roll pre-roll means the cursoris going to jump back depending on whatyou set it for for example if I put mycursor right at the beginning here andif I were to start recording right nowit would start recording right at thatpoint on the other hand if I turn mypre-roll on and then set some amount andagain right now looks like there's onlya couple of numbers here Steinberg doesthis in so many displays there actuallyfour numbers here even though you can'tsee them if I go to this far left areaand click I can see all four decimalplaces and these four decimal placescome up over and over again get the barthe beat 16th notes and the amount ofticks ticks being all the little fineincrements in between 16th notes but forexample if I go to the bar move that upto number one and set my cursor right atthe beginning when I hit record mycursor is going to jump all the way backa full bar before it even starts tocount in next to that you have the postroll to understand this we first want togo to our preferences come down to therecord option and there's a check boxhere that if you select it says stopafter the automatic Punch Out apply thismeans is you have a punch in and punchout when it reaches the end of the punchout it's going to stop for you let meput it at the beginning I'm going to hitrecord it jumps back a measure it goesthrough these few bars and when itreaches the end of the punch outpoint it stops and it deactivates therecording if we turn down this post rollset it for an EXT bar do the same thinggo back to the beginning hit record itjumps a bar in the beginning it startsrecording through these four bars that Ihave set up but now it's going to go anextra barafterwards and then it's going to stopthen you have your Tempo and time syncoptions first one you have the option toturn the tempo track on or off if you'regoing to be using various temples youdon't want to leave that on your song isjust one tempo throughout you can turnit off you can set the tempo and thenagain we have another hidden buttonwhich reveals the time signature rightnow my song is in four four times so Iget fourclicks but I can change that to whateverI want maybe three four time now I havethreeclicks then you have this activateexternal sync button you can turn it onor off or you can open up the setup forthe external sync what is external SyncIt's when some other device can actuallycontrol Q base for example at one pointin the past I had projects where I wasmaking commercials and I had a tapemachine that had what was called a Timecode strip on it when that tape machinewould play whatever midi devices I hadconnected to it I wanted them to play atthe same time and that's what happenshere let's say I had that same scenarioI had the tape machine hooked up if Iturned on this external sync qase wouldactually wait until I started my tapemachine and Cubase would follow the codefrom the tape machine if you have thosekind of situations then you would usethis otherwise you'll probably nevertouch this option then we come to thevarious C in Click options and metmetronome settings again we have a threelittle dot we can expand this firstoption allows us to hear the click ornot if I hit this button The Click turnsoff we have the count in option we'llcome back to that in a second we have apicture of the click pattern you canactually click on this this allows us tochange pitches on the actual clicksright now I have the first click alittle higher so I get this kind ofeffect but let's say I move that down acouple notches and then I have thiseffector I can move it right to the same pitchas everythingelse I could turn it off by going to thebottompart and any combination I want I canchange how many clicks I can save apattern if I want and then I have themetronome setup First Option allows meto activate the click do I want theclick on midi and audio do I want itwhile I'm recording playing or justrecording and then I have the option forfor the number of bars on the C in we goback to this C in buttton right now Ihit my recordbutton metronome starts and therecording starts immediately on theother hand if I activate this count inI'll get two bars of Click before therecording evenstarts helps you prepare before therecording starts you can change thatnumber of bars I can change the timesignature for the count in and you havea tab where you can actually pick thedifferent sounds if you don't like usingthe same sounds that are already defaultyou can come down here and create soundpresets these are fun to play with if Igo to stick for example and then I startthe playing I get this kind of a soundfor theclick let's try this mechanicclick you don't want to use those youcan go back to use the Steinberg clicksound sayokay and then our final set of buttonsor displays we have a midi input optionhere it shows if there's any midi inputactivity we get midi output we can seethe level on the song and again we havethree dots so we can expand this a bitand then we have the level display thisis tied to what the control room hasover here this big red knob that allowsyou to turn the level up or down whichhas no effect on recording levels oranything like that I can hit this leverto change the outputlevel this is strictly a monitoringcontrol as I change this level the samething happens on this big red knob overhere and that's going to wrap it up fortoday's discussion on the transport asalways if you haven't already be sure tograb your copy of the digital audiomanual content navigation guide from thelink below this video the faster betterway to learn and review pick it up lookit over all the different topics thatare gathered there and then you two canget started on your path to a better wayto learn all this stuff we began adiscussion looking at the playback andtransporting cuase we saw how to showand hide the transport we set up thetransport buttons we took a little tourof all the different buttons we saw howthere's an expanded view on many ofthose buttons with the three little dotswe saw different preferences for thePost roll we talked about the tempo andtime signature the external sync thecount and the click options then weended up talking about input and outputactivity meters and we will continue toexplore and learn all these differentfeatures and functions in Cubase asalways it's great to have you guys hereand I'll see you on the nextvideo
