Parts and Events V4 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's moveon to our fourth video as we continuediscussing parts and events in Cubasebut before we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on the fourth videonow on the subject of parts and eventsall previous videos as usual or in thenavigation guide in the link below butlet's lead off today talking about theaudio alignment panelso the audio alignment panel I'm surefor many of you by now that are alreadyCubase users I'm sure this is somethingyou've already used at some point andfor those of you that may be new andhaven't used this well you're just nothaving as much fun as you could so letme show you the basics of this operationfor this example I recorded my voicesinging ahmany times over through this littlesection of chords and really in thisexample these parts are pretty muchlined up already it doesn't take realrocket science to say ah on the beatevery time but this will give you theintroduction to what this thing can doand the idea here is you take a guidetrack one that you think is good enoughor that you've made you know your editson and then you have these other takesof singing the same part that may or maynot be perfectly aligned and typicallyif you've sang them live or recordedthem live in some way they're not goingto be perfectly aligned especially ifyou're singing the same Lyric over andover again and in times past you wouldhave had to do some kind of manual audioalignment to get these parts to line upget their consonants all hitting on thesame spot and that kind of thing butwith the audio alignment tool let's gofind this here if we go up to our audiomenu and then we come down to open theaudio alignment panel we get this optionright here and the typical operation isto highlight your guide track orreference or whatever you're going touse to match everything else to go up tothe option that says reference and clickon the plus sign and that fills in acopy of the wave of that part at thatpoint you go to your target whateveryou're trying to align up highlight thatand hit the plus sign but here'ssomething you may or may not be aware ofyou not only can do this to one trackand I actually used to do this for thelongest time one track at a time but youdon't have to you can select all of yourtracks in this case I have five otherparts of my vocals here and I can now goup to the plus sign on the targets andthat fills in every one of the targetsthere's a little drop down list thatallows you to see each part individuallybut instead of trying to do each oneyou've got them all right here at oneshot you have a couple of options youhave one down here that says match thewords and if you're using vocals this isprobably the one you're going to want topick on the other hand they have thisoption here that says prefer timeshifting and the idea here is more likein situations where you may haverecorded things with multiplemicrophones and you just want to get agood result from those different takesso that would be the option you wouldpick in that case but most of the timeyou're going to do the one that saysmatch the words only and and leave thistime shifting when unchecked you have anoption below that says alignmentPrecision so if you don't wanteverything to just line up as perfectlyas possible then dial that down you canalways experiment with it but let'sleave it at 100 and Watch What Happenswhat I want you to observe when I hitthis is that it's going to do a littlecalibration here where it's going tostart aligning things you're going tosee a dialogue here and what you want topay attention to is that it's going torun through it five times because it'sgoing through each one of these anddoing them automatically for me withoutme having to go back and do each onemanually Here We Go Auto alignand just like that it has taken each oneof these audio files and lined them uplet's see what we got[Music]why would you not want to do that inyour songs that is just such an easything to do now with this auto alignmentand it just adds so much depth andcharacter in your songs when you can addlayered vocals like that and just assome side notes to really refiningsomething like this if it's somethingyou do want to use if you take all youreventsand one by one add a color to them youcan go up on the toolbar and adddifferent colors and then select themall and double click on them they openup in the sample editor and at thatpoint you can go up to the display thatshows the clip names just spin throughthem with your mouse and you're able tosee all the different events nowand if something stands out or somethingis still not lined up the way you wantthere's a variety of different warpingtools to make some changes we've talkedabout things like that in other videosand we will probably talk about it moreas we go along in this series so yourtypical ways of renaming these events ifyou click on an event you go up into theinfo line you can type something new upthere or another way is to go to thetrack double click on the name type inyour name if you just hit enter it'llonly rename that part of the track butif you hold down shift and enter then itwill rename that track and the eventitself and then if we look at our objectselect tool the little pointer we cansee that when we click on this we havethree options here most the time you'regoing to use the one that says thenormal sizing when you use that you cango to your event at the bottom left orright you can change the size of itsimply by clicking and dragging iteither wayyou have another option if you'veintroduced any kind of fade into yourevent which you can drag from the toparea again when you change the size thatfade goes with it but if you hold Ctrland ALT before you drag like that thetop part will stay anchored but thebottom part will shiftwhen you drag things they always go withthe snap value in case you don't knowthat if you hold Ctrl you can alwaysfreely move things so this is a drumLoopand if we go to this next option when weclick the object tool we have the onethat says sizing moves the contents whathappens is it still stays the objecttool now when I change the size what'sinside of it moves along with itso now that whole drum Loop has nowshifted and moved all to the leftand then the real convenient one thatyou probably don't use a lot but it's agreat option to know about is the onethat says sizing applies the timestretch so anytime you have your Loopand you need to change it either makingit bigger or smaller if I now grab thistwo bar Loop and I move it down to justone bar it's now time stretch that Loopdown to one barsame way if I grab it and move it backto two bars it'll move that whole Loopwithin the time of two barsall right now let's talk about this playTool a little bit more this isdefinitely one of those tools that has alittle more to it than you would thinkat first and the play Tool you go up toyour toolbar you hit the little speakerand you get a little speaker which youcan hold over audio or midi and justclick it and play that partand you get a quick audition the firstthing let's talk about is the volume ofthis speaker is independent from yourregular project volume of this sound forexample if I hit the transport[Music]and that's the volume of my Loop but ifI double click this and I go into thesample editor there's a separate volumecontrol and the best way to do this isturn on the loop and hit the playand then right next to it you have thislittle volume control which you can nowindependently setand this is what determines what thespeaker is going to play atthen hit the play to turn it off so ifyour play is not at the right volumethat's how you reset that now when youhave the play you also if you click thisagain you get the scrub tool gives youan option to go to scrub and with scrubyou can hit your audio and go back andforthand the same thing the scrub now has itsown volume if you go up to edit down toyour preferences down to transport andthen scrub you have a little volumecontrol here to change but now here'sone of those great little featuresthat's kind of hidden and you might notknow it maybe you do but many times ifyou do use the scrub what you're tryingto do is isolate a particular piece ofaudio let's say I'm looking for thiskick right hereand typically your operation would be tozero in at the beginning of it then Imight switch over to my cut tool andmake a cut then I might switch back tomy scrub tool find the beginning of whatI want and make another cut ultimatelyfinding the piece that I want andisolating that one little piece well youdon't have to do any of that that's thething about the scrub tool that you mayor may not know the scrub also doublesas a resizing tool so if I take my audioand I go down into let's say the lowerleft corner and I start dragging itwhile I'm scrubbing I can also resizethe actual audio eventright up to the point where I need itsame thing on the right side I can go tothe right side grab itscrub it to where I need itand there I go now I have a resizedpiece of audio exactly where I need itwithout the need to go to two differenttools and make various extra edits allright it's going to wrap it up for todayas usual if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatbefore you go links to all the contenton this channel ever growing and free touse remember to not put pressure onyourself to learn everything and knoweverything all the time that's the wholepurpose of why the navigation guide isthere so that you can use it as aresource when you need something thatyou don't quite remember or you have tore-study just hopefully there to bringyou back to something that you need tounderstand quick without going throughso much effort that normally you wouldto try to uncover just the simplestanswers to things speaking of whichtoday we looked at the audio alignmentpanel and that is a great tool if you'veever tried to mess with aligning yourvocals we talked about how to renamesome events and how to resize differentevents talk about some of thosedifferent options with the object toolwhere you can resize the contents or orhaving the size change the time stretchlearn some of the great options on thescrub tool that go beyond just simplescrubbing and we learned how to set thevolume on both the scrub and the playTool and I can tell you there are somemore very great tool options Yet to ComeAs we continue on this journey oflooking through the parts and events inCubaseas usual it's great to have you guyshere and I'll see you on the next video
