today we talk about

Parts and Events V3 in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we'll moveon to our third video as we discussparts and events in Cubase but before westart I want to remind you that there'sa link below to the free contentnavigation guide which is an easy tonavigate webpage with links to all thecontent on this channel and besides thatin the near future I'm going to beginadding tips and other bits ofinformation that will only be availablethere you know things like simple stepsthat will get you started and up andrunning quick things that are in thevideos but are written down in simplesteps that serve as quick reminders whenyou need information down the road ifyou're working with programs like wavelab or Cubase plugins or the cable guysshaper box and many many other projectsthat are in the works then I know you'regoing to find just like I have that thisis an invaluable study Aid and the otherthing I want to make sure you understandis that this is not a simple PDF this isa constantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are are changed really anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you and it'sabsolutely free Okay so let's getstarted so we're on the third videos wediscussed the subject of parts andevents all the previous videos as usualor in the navigation guide in the linkbelow let's start this discussionlooking at some of the tools and whathappens with them anytime you rightclick down in your project you get thisbar with these various tools on it thereare ways to change the view on thatwe're not going to deal with that at themoment but just looking at the tools youknow you can pick your various tools andof course you get a little info screenthat tells you what these various toolsare but when you go up on the toolbarand look at these same tools some ofthese have actually more than onefunction to them and really the best wayto learn that is just go through themand click on them for example if youclick on them individually as you'regoing through these then you choose thetool just like you would down in theproject if you take a second and clickon these and then click on each one thatyou hit another time if there's asecondary option or more tools involvedyou'll get another info screen withthese other choices and it's worth yourwhile to explore through those just tosee those different choices the mainones are in the object select when youhit that then you have these variouschoices as you come down the line andyou hit the warp tool again if you clickon that you have some choices on thatwhen you come to the line tool you havechoices and we've gone through all thesein another video and then you come tothe little speaker which allows you toaudition the different sounds let's talkabout this for a second if I click on ityou can see I have two options here butlet's just stay the one that says playfor a second now when I come down intomy project I can hold my mouse over anyevent that I have down here whether it'smidi or audioand I can audition that sound dependingon where I clickand I can go to any drum soundanything what's interesting about thisis if you have effects on the channelreverbs and delays and that kind ofthing when this auditions like thisyou'll hear still the dry signal nowanother option up here if you go back upto the speaker and you click on it againnow you have the scrub option and thescrub option allows you to run over yourpartkind of zoom in on something specific ifyou're looking for itand it will change speed depending onhow fast you drag over itconcerning the scrub tool you also havesome options because sometimes the scrubtool is demanding on your system if yougo to your edit and come down topreferences and you look all the waydown to one that says transport you'llsee an option for scrub right there inthe scrub you have an option to use thehigh quality scrub mode or uncheck thatif you uncheck it the audio quality is alittle bit less but it doesn't use asmuch processing power you can also turnthe volume up and down on how loud youwant your scrubbing to be and you canchoose inserts for the effects whilescrubbing if that's an option you wantas well if we go back and hit the objectselect tool either on the toolbar orright clicking down here in the projectthat's how we select these actual eventsonce you've selected an event if youwant you can actually use your arrowkeys to move backwards and forwardsthrough them or move up throughdifferent tracks if you want up and downwith your arrowsone of the moves you'll find yourselfmaking lots of times in Cubase ingeneral is going to the range toolmaking a range of some kindmaybe right clicking again to go back toyour object and select another piece ormaybe going back to your range againmaking another range because this tooloption is such a frequent move thathappens they've given you this otherchoice which is fairly new in Cubasewhere you can hit this button up here onthe toolbar next to the object tool andit combines the object and the rangetogether which now if you go down to anyevent if you stay on the upper part yougot the range tool which you can make arange but the minute you go down to thebottom part it turns back into theobject select so you have the option tohave both tools available without reallychanging anything this depends onkeeping this view of at least two rowsin your project and you can alwayschange height and rows just so you knowby holding the shift and the G key orthe shift in the H key or going down onthe right is a little arrow thatactually gives you the zoom options andyou can set an option right here thatsays Zoom tracks to two rows so there'sa whole host of options in selectingthings and at some point you're going towant to experiment see which ones workfor you and which ones really aren'trelevant but let me do a quick rundownof some of these options just so you canbe sure you have Clarity on what theycan do all of these options that we'regoing to talk about are going to be upunder the edit menu and then down tothis Sub menu that says select and thenyou just have this whole host of optionshere some of these I have keyboardshortcuts assigned to and keep in mindthat if you find something in this listthat you like you can assign your ownshortcut to it and that's really whatyou want to do if you use it frequentlybut obviously the common ones are allwhich would be control a and none whichis Ctrl shift a so if I'm down here inthe project and I hit control a I'veselected every possible event if I hitCtrl shift a I've deselected everypossible event if I select an event andI go up into my edit again down to theselect the next one I have is invert andinvert will take everything except forthe thing I had selected now I alwaysuse a split screen and that changes somany things on what commands work andhow they work so if you're a splitscreen user you have to use these withyour own kind of modifications but thenext one in the group is to make a looppoint up here on the top and if you dothe shortcut key that they tell youwhich is the alt and the slash itselects everything in the loop areathere but that's also listed under theedit select and in Loop the next onefrom start to cursor or from cursor toend obviously but let's do it from startto cursor selects everything going up tothe cursor if you're kind of in themiddle of an event and it ignores Dallasevents so let's move this right to thebeginning of a measure go to the nextoption which says from cursor to end andthen it goes from the cursor and selectseverything to the end of the project nowwhen we come back into this some ofthese are grayed out because some ofthese have to be in different editors sothe next ones are going to be in theactual key editor so if I select a midipart and I select one of the notes inthe key editor now you get a bunch ofoptions to tell you things like equalpitch on all the octaves so in this caseit took an e up here and an e an octavelower and every other e that was in theproject if I select just one note againand go equal pitch for the same octavethen it takes everything that's rightthere on that same line we have one thatsays select control there's a no rangeI'm going to refer you back to videoswe've done on controllers to get moreinformation on that the next one if Iselect the track back in the projectthen I hit my alt and my T it selectsevery event on that trackand that's the one that's listed herethat says all on selected tracks some ofthese you have to have selected tracksso if I select this track which hasevents and I move my cursor someplaceand I go edit select I have an optionthat says events under the cursor so ifI hit that one that will select anyevent I have and this happens if I havemultiple tracks selected same thing thenext one only applies in the sampleeditor so if I open up a sample in thesample editor and I have an event overhere on the side on the right and I goto edit select and down to select eventthen it selects this event over here onthe right you have some that applystrictly to the range so if I make alittle selection on my range tool and Igo down to the one that says rightselection to the side of the cursor thenit continues that range to the cursorsame thing if I was to make a selectionon the other side and go down to leftselection this cursor does the samething so as always your three primaryways of removing events just likeanything else in Cubase would be to toselect something hit the backspace keyor on your toolbar find your erase tooland erase something or same thing selectit and hit the delete key a fun optionthat's probably very underutilized isthe nudging options if we go up on ourtoolbar if it's not showing and youright click there's an option that saysnudge which gives you this toolbar withvarious buttons on it and if I selectthis event right here you have variousnudge buttons that will change thebeginning of it watch this if I changethe beginning the beginning will shrinkor the beginning will grow on the otherside the end will shrink or the end willgrow or these buttons in the middle willactually move the event back and forthif you haven't changed your shortcutkeys your arrow keys with a control andALT will do the same thing if I holdCtrl and my left Arrow I can actuallymove the event I use my right arrow Ican move it back if I hold my ALT keyand use the left Arrow I can grow it oruse the right arrow and shrink it and ifI hold alt and shift I can shrink theright side or grow the right side andthis happens with midi notes and drumnotes when you're dealing with a drumeditor just the same moves happen overand over again in Cubase a couple morethings just to wrap this up if you go upto your edit and just like we came downwe had an option that said select withall those various options you have anoption that says move and you can do allkinds of things with the move first onesays event starts to the cursor so itmoves this event to where the start ofthe event hits the cursor you have onethat says event ends to cursor if youselect an event but then go and select adifferent track you have the option tomove that event to that track at thatpoint it puts that little event on topof the information on the other trackwhich then gives you these last twooptions so it says events to front andevents to back so if I say events toback it shows that piece now movedbehind it or I can take this next pieceand say move that one to the back youhave shortcut keys if you haven'tchanged them of F10 and F9 to do thesame thing and then you have this kindof odd situation where you may use thissometimes if you select a bunch ofevents together and you come down intothe edit menu there's also an option forfunctions and at the bottom of thefunctions you have one that says set thespaces between the selected events atthat point you can type in a value ofseconds and hit OK and it will spacethose events out that way all rightthat's going to wrap it up for today asusual if you haven't grabbed yournavigation guide be sure to grab thatfrom the link below gives you access toall the content on this channel evergrowing and free to use all the videosare in order so when you need to findsomething by subject you can just lookit up and away you go so today we kindof found out that some tools havemultiple phone functions we mess withthe play and scrub use the object toolto move things around we learned that wecould combine the select and the rangetools we went through all the variousedit select options learned how todelete and nudge things around looked atthe edit and the move options andfinally the functions and the set spacerso for some of you that's probably awhole bunch of new stuff and for a lotof you it's probably a big review eitherone of those options I personally findvery valuableI always say sometimes the best learningis just being reminded of something Ialready know but somewhere along theline I may have forgotten or stoppedusing itas always it's great to have you guyshere I'll see you in the next video
