Note Expression V5 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our fifth video as we continueexploring note expression in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wave lab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos areretains really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we move on to the fifthvideo of this node expression topic allthe previous videos as always here inthe navigation guide in the link belowbut let's have some fun and figure outhow we can actually use midi to controlthis node expression I'm going to focuson Pitch Bend for a minute becausethat's real easy to see I'm going tomake a little selection of a noteif I go over to the inspector and makesure the node expression area is open ifI come down to my list of ExpressionsI'm going to choose the one that sayspitch Bend if I come down the list Ihave an option that says input and mostof my controllers are already pre-mappedincluding pitch Bend but just for thefun of it I can hit this button thatsays midi learn now if I hit the pitchBend wheel on my keyboard itautomatically fills in Pitch bend onthis drop down list if I move mymodulation wheel puts modulation in thedrop down list let's go back to pitchpen and I'm going to uncheck this midito learn and then if we move down to thebottom we have an option that saysGlobal and then we have a check box thatsays record midi as node expressionwe're going to concentrate on thisoption that says overdub node expressionthe first part of the example I'm goingto uncheck this and just so you can seeit I'm going to click on this note andI'm going to play itand I'm going to move my pitch Bendwheeland as I move my pitch bend it actuallywrote some Pitch Bend information inhere but if I continue to play thisand move my pitch BendI can hear it changing but it's notdoing any more writingon the other hand if I come over and hitthe app that says overdub the noteexpressionagain if I just play itI can hear it but nothing happens theminute I hit my record enable which I'mdoing right nowand then I move the pitch Bend wheelagainnow I can write the data right over itand I can do it as many times as I needto get the perfect taketurn off the track and unrecord and thenturn off this overdub option you canactually step record some of this nodeexpression data if you go up to yourtoolbar make sure that the option forstep midi input is checked that givesyou this option one of these options isthe step input another option says midistep input and then the third optionsays the node expression midi input youmake a selection of this midi step inputand make sure that the node expressionlights up and you select a note you canthen move something like your pitch bandor your modulation like I'm going to dohere and then we'll actually write thedata let me try it with pitch Bend firstI'm going to select pitch Bend at anytime I can click on a note and then movemy pitch bandand it will audition that sound now if Igo ahead and select a note and enactthis option for step input and then movemy pitch Bendit actually writes that on that note letme try another one I'm going to do thisherereenact this midi inputlet's switch this over to modulationI'm going to hit this noteinactive midi step input and move mymodulation wheel[Music]then when I look at the note I can seethat it wrote that modulation on therethen we get something like thisif you're dealing with a note expressionand you double click and open up theeditor window you can use the arrows onyour keyboard to just move through theseevents if you want to back and forthwith the left and right arrow you cancopy and paste node expression data if Idraw some data in a nice note and then Icontrol all control copy go to anothernote and Control Paste it in I can movemy expression around just like that youcan also paste this data onto differentexpressions for example right now thisis modulation data but if I go to thisnote and maybe change this to a breathcontroller instead then I can stillcontrol V onto this and now that'sbreath control data if you want torepeat something that's been drawn inthese known expression Windows say Iselect this little piece right here if Iclick on it with my mouse and then holdthe ALT key on my computer at that pointI can drag this piece and release itwherever I want to make a copy of itwe've already said that you can click onthese events and then move them aroundif you need to so we have looked atWhat's called the release phase of thesenotes meaning if you open up the editoryou can grab this area in the lowerright and stretch it out which increasesthis release length but there's someunique Behavior here and you'redefinitely going to want to understandit give you some examples the firstthing I want to show you is how you canactually select multiple events and dothis so let's say I take this note hereand normally if I go to the next note itjust moves the editor over if I go backto the first note but instead I hold thecontrol key and click this I can nowextend my editor and I can keep doingthat with every note I want now againit's kind of hard to see in the videobecause it's looking at a white on whitepicture here but let's say I take somePitch band information and I startdrawing it through all of these notesas I finish one note it basically stopsand I can't do any more to it when I getto the next note it'll start to redrawagainon the other end if I take this releaselength and I extend itnow when I draw into this pitch Bendyou're going to hear it run from onenote to the other continually[Music]now the other thing to know to saveyourself some frustration let's say Iunselect these notes anytime I go backto a note and double click that sameextend range is still in place and everynote I hit it still shows that sameextend range and it's definitely verycumbersome to go to every single noteand then start shrinking them down ifyou want to bring them back to normalagain well you don't have to do thatbecause if you control all select allyour notes and double click on any oneof them now when you take this extendrange and bring it back to normalthen that will make every note return tonormal so now when I click on them andremember you can use your arrows to movethrough theseas I move through the notes everythingis back to its normal extended range sosometimes on these release lengths ifyou draw and Note datathat goes beyond the note and then intothis release area even if you change therelease length but come back and look atit you can see that that written data isstill there if I change this releaselength back to its normal place I havean option under the midi menu come downto node expression and there's an optiondown here that says trim the nodeexpression to the note length and if Iselect that now when I come back andextend this release length I can seethat all the extra stuff that waswritten in there before has now beentrimmed off so down in this Global areawe have the option that says record themidi as node expression I'm going toleave this unchecked for a second I'mgoing to close out of this editor nowwatch what happens when I record mididata with that unchecked[Music]if we look at the recorded data we cansee all kinds of modulation written herelet's go into the editor and as we lookdown in the controller Lane formodulation we can see that it wrotemodulation data in here if we look up onthe notes we can see that there's nodata written on the actual notes now ifI go over and check this option thatsays record the midi data as nodeexpression basically do exactly the samething[Music]we can still see in the project that weare able to see modulation the same waybut when we go into the editor when Ilook down in the modulation Lane there'snothing here and if I look on the notesthere's the little icons on each note ifI open up the notes now I can see thatthe node expression has been writtenright on the notes themselves and eachnote will contain the node expressionthat goes with it pretty much everythingyou record with midi will be put intothe node expression if you want to dothis but you do have an option if you goup to MIDI come down to your nodeexpression again there's an option thatsays the node expression midi setup ifyou want to turn off certain things frombeing recorded you can turn offcontrollers or you can pick individualcontrollers to turn off or you can turnoff the pitch Bend or any of these otheroptions and then if you want to save anyof these you can save them as well thenyou have this super convenient option ifyou have recorded you know midi into thecontroller Lanes you can go up to yourmidi menu down to your node expressionand then you have an option that saysconvert to node expression and when youhit that all your controller laneinformation is now on the mini nodeExpressions if you have notes like thiswith Note expression on this Note andNote expression on this note and then atsome point you need to overlap thesenotes you have the option to selectthese notes back to MIDI down to noteexpression and then you can consolidatethe expression overlaps what happens nowis one expression will end when theother one starts which gives ussomething like this watch when I controlundo this and you can see what it usedto look like see that's the previousnote expression which then got changedto thisall right so here is a reallyinteresting option that is available andwe actually could spend a long timeexploring what could come of this butlet me demonstrate it so you can seewhat it does I have a Hellion on thistrack I'm going to take these chords uphere and drag it onto this trackso I have these chords now on this trackI bring Hellion into view everything iscoming in on this first slot which ismidi Channel Oneand you can see right here that that'swhere the activity isif I take this patch of course I couldtake any patch but I'm going to take thesame patch I'm going to copy it I'mgoing to paste it out of these otherslots so I have the same program on fourdifferent slots but each one's adifferent midi Channel midi channel onetwo three four now when I play the songagain it's still playing on this veryfirst slot of midi channel one if I goover to the track area and go to theinspector in this area where it showsthe channel and I make sure that thischannel says any and then I come downinto the expression map area but now ifI go up to the midi menu and I come backto my node expression option I have anoption here that says distribute thenotes to MIDI channels if I click onthat Cubase takes every one of thesenotes in the chords and puts it on adifferent midi Channel now it's spreadthe notes onto all four different midichannels you can see every one of theseis being playedI could change these to differentinstruments and have all kinds ofinteresting sounds I have different noteExpressions on every one of these notesif I open the editor window I can see inthe drop down I have modulation andbreath and pan and after touch and allthese node expressions are on the actualnotes but if I go back to the midi menucome back down to node expression andthen pick the option that says dissolvethe note expression when I open this upall the note expression has been takenoff of these notes and is now in thecontroller lanes and if I come down tothe option that allows me to show allthe used controllers now I can see allthe node expression that was on thesenotes has been distributed to thesedifferent controller lanes for sure theamount of options we have with nodeexpression is quite large and that'sgoing to wrap it up for today as alwaysspam grabbed your navigation guideshould have grabbed that from the linkbelow this video quick easy access toall the content on this channel evergrowing and free to use content is inorder and being updated continually pickit up put it in your favorites and thenjust use it when you need it and thatwraps up our node expression discussionas usual it's great to have you guyshere and I will see you on the nextvideo
