Note Expression V4 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today let's moveon to our fourth video as we continue todiscussing note expression in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the freecontent navigation guide which is aneasy to navigate webpage with links toall the content on this channel andbesides that in the near future I'mgoing to begin adding tips and otherbits of information that will only beavailable there you know things likesimple steps that will get you startedand up and running quick things that arein the videos but are written down insimple steps that serve as quickreminders when you need information downthe road if you're working with programslike wavelab or Cubase plugins or thecable guys shaper box and many manyother projects that are in the worksthen I know you're going to find justlike I have that this is an invaluablestudy Aid and the other thing I want tomake sure you understand is that this isnot a simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime video videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on to the fourthvideo of node expression previous videosand all videos for this channel arealways in the navigation guide in thelink below but now I want to kind oflook at these node expression controlsand what I mean by that is when youclick on the note or in our case doubleclick on it it opens up this littlecontrol window and there's a lot ofoptions and things that are available inhere if I go to my pencil tool and Istart drawingand I pretty much can freely drawwhatever I want but if I go to my firstoption up here in the upper left saysone shot mode now when I click and drawI get a straight line and I can take itup or down and it doesn't matter where Imove it stays on that one shot if I turnit off again then I can freely drawagain then you have this little thing onthe left side says the vertical snapunderstand this vertical snap we reallyneed to do something like tuning so I'mgoing to go back and find that in thelist and now when I drawwe look down here in the lower right wehave numbers and decimal places but if Iturn this vertical snap onwe only have the number the decimalplaces stay locked at zero so the bottomline is you get a little bit more of ajump when the vertical snap is on whenyou turn it off you're going to get theactual semitones in the middlenow if it's ever off and you're drawingthings you can also just quickly holdthe shift key which will light that upand it'll do the same thing I'm drawingwithout itor I turn it on with holding the shiftkeyso I have those options then moving upin the right we have the horizontal snapif this is on which it is right noweverything I draw snaps to whatever thegrid is set by my quantize up here Ihave it set to 132nd if I move that downto say 1 8 and I do the same kind ofdrawingnow it's going to jump by eighth notesquite a big difference but if I turnthat horizontal snap off then I canfreely draw it no matter whatI'm going to go back to modulation onthe left again turn the horizontal snapon I'm going to draw some modulation inhereand then now it sounds like thisyou get that little bit of modulation atthe end but then you have this option toactually change the release length onthese things now again on something likethis it's real subtle but you can hearit if I extend this outwhat happens nowthe note still stops but it's a smootherending because it rings outbut if I move it back to where it waspretty much cuts off right awaythere's probably some other effects withthat it'll be even more noticeable butthat's what that can do then you canchange the editor size if you grab itright in the middle you have threesettings you got this one the next sizeup and the next size up so you canalways change the size that way if youwant to and as we've said many timesalready down here on the left you havethis parameter selection right now Ionly have one note expression but if Ihad five note Expressions they'd allshow up right here all right now thisbrings us to these smart controls andwe've had these in other videos we'vedone when we talk about midi editingwhen you're dealing with the smartcontrols you want to think of themalways in groups of nine there are ninecontrols here that you can understandlet me try to run them down for you withexamples I'm going to mute the sound sowe can just look at the wave here so ifwe take this first one up in the leftand grab it with our Mouse it allows usto tilt down to the leftthe same thing on the right if we grabthis one on the right and click it withour model so we can tilt down from therightboth of those offer the option to holdthe ALT key and when you hold the ALTkey instead of tilting it it'll kind offlatten the curve out holding the ALTkey and pulling downit brings it down but it kind offlattens it as it goes on the rightholding the ALT key and bringing it downkind of flattens it as it goesso one is considered a tilt and one isconsidered kind of a compression sothat's your first four controllers youhave tilt left alt tilt left you havetilt right alt tilt right and then inthe middle you have scale vertically ifyou grab that and pull it down it takesthe whole thing down and kind of crushesit as it gets to the bottomor raises it up and then if you moveslightly off center either to the leftor the right does the same thing eitherway then it simply does move it up anddown it'll keep the perspective until itreaches the bottom and then it'llflatten it out let me draw a slightlydifferent curve for this onethen moving on to the right center thenext option in the middle here saysscale around the absolute Center you'llsee here is it'll kind of pull themiddle down and it'll kind of raise theleft and the right around It ultimatelygiving you more of a flat line if I grabthis and pull it down it flattens it thesides rise up to meet it the option theygive you here is if you hit the ALT keyon this one now you get what's calledscale around the relative Center it kindof keeps the left and right wherethey're at and just brings the centerdown so I'm holding the ALT key I pullit downand it'll flatten it out that wayand then your last option on these smartcontrols at the very bottom see anoption for stretchand when you grab that and pull it it'llkind of stretch right around where yougrab it you'll even see a little cursorthere when you do it if I move over hereand do the same thing the kind of cursorwill move in this direction then if Iclick it and drag it it'll stretch it inthat area so those are your nine smartcontrols you have the upper left to tiltyou have the alt to compress you havethe upper right to tilt you have the altto compress you have to scale verticallyin the middle you have to movevertically either side of that you havethe scale around absolute Center you canhold alt to scale around the relativeCenter bottom you have the option tostretch it all right it's going to wrapit up for today as always if you haven'tgrabbed your navigation guide be sure tograb that from the link below this videoit gives you quick easy access to allthe content on this channel ever growingand free to use content is being updatedall the time you don't have it doyourself a favor click on the linkdownload it to your favorites and thenuse it whenever you need it we looked atall the node expression controls and theone shot mode and the vertical snap andthe horizontal snap we saw we can changethe release length and the parameterrange change the edit their size and theparameter selection and then we got intothe smart controls and always rememberthat there are nine smart controls mostof them are just variations with the ALTkey but if you can remember that numbernine then every time you look at thatwindow you'll know what you're doing aswe continue to move through the nodeexpression learning all the featuresthat are available as always it's greatto have you guys hereand I'll see you on the next video
