Markers V3 in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigitalaudiomanual.com today we move onto our third video as we continue todiscuss markers in Cubase but before westart I want to remind you that there'sa link below to the free contentnavigation guide which is an easy tonavigate webpage with links to all thecontent on this channel and besides thatin the near future I'm going to beginadding tips and other bits ofinformation that will only be availablethere you know things like simple stepsthat will get you started and up andrunning quick things that are in thevideos but are written down in simplesteps that serve as quick reminders whenyou need information down the road ifyou're working with programs like wavelab or Cubase plugins or the cable guysshaper Box 2 and many many otherprojects that are in the works then Iknow you're going to find just like Ihave that this is an invaluable studyAid and the other thing I want to makesure you understand is that this is nota simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime 10 videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youand it's absolutely free Okay so let'sget started so we're on the third videoas we continue to discuss markers inCubase and as usual all the previousvideos are in the navigation guide inthe link below but let's lead off todate we're going to talk about whathappens when you start moving thesemarkers from one track to another if youlook over here I have three differentmarker tracks and I have various markerswith different numbers on all thedifferent tracks and on this first trackthe markers go one two three and on upand on the second track they're goingone two three as well if I take thismarker number two from this track and Idrag it down to this track which alreadyhas a marker two on it this marker toobecame a marker eight why does thismatter and what's the significance firstof all letting you know that you canonly have you know one number on eachone of these markers and if that markernumber is being used on that track it'sgoing to change the number but one ofthe reasons this matters is becausethese markers not only tell you you knowwhere the certain sections are in thesongs but you can assign key commands tothese markers to navigate through yoursong and the typical key commands thatare already set up in Cubase is if Ihold the shift key on my keyboard and Ihit number one or number two I know youcan see the cursor moving number threeevery time I hit like and I'm keepingthe shift key down the whole time I'mdoing this number four it moves to thedifferent markers so you can actuallynavigate through the song with keycommands so you'll never have a numbertwo and another number two because youwant to be able to have the differentkey commands on that particular trackwhich brings us back to the other pointwe were talking about if you open upthis marker display and you look at thisdrop down you have this option that saysreassign the position marker IDs becausethese markers over time can very easilybecome all over the place we talkedabout it a little bit but like in thisexample this marker is going from numberone to number eight and then to numbertwo and number three and it could havebeen number seven and who knows whatdepending on what you're doing that mayor may not matter but if it does matterand you want the markers in order youcan use that little option and themarker thing hit the drop down you go tothe reassign position IDs and now themarkers are one two three four five andso you easily can navigate right up anddown another thing to be aware of issometimes all the tracks in yourinspector over here on your project viewmay or may not have all the buttons thatare available if you go down to thebottom here there's a little gear whichopens up these track options and as youcan see they have different options forall the different kinds of tracks uphere but specifically if I go to the onethat says marker and I click on it itshows I have a couple of buttons thatI'm not even using so let's go ahead andadd those in as well it's just a matterof clicking on it and hitting add andthen okay and sometimes even aftergetting the controls in you don't alwayssee them on the tracks you need acertain amount of space so like I haveto expand this track now to see all thebuttons I've added we went through allthe buttons on the track before inanother video but you also have thisoption to lock the marker track so thenyou can't do any other editing to themas far as moving things around as we'vesaid you can have up to 10 marker tracksand every time you add a marker Track bydefault it will say marker with a numberafter it but you can change the names onthose tracks just by clicking on it andgiving it a different name we've talkedabout this little check box that saysthe active track you want to always payattention to that because even if youselect another track it may not be theactive one and then when you open thisdialog you'll be editing stuff but it'llstill be to this active track anytimeyou create a new marker track itautomatically becomes the active trackand it's just a matter of hitting thecheck box the other thing we'vementioned is the great feature of beingable to export these cycle markers whenyou do an audio mix down and it givesyou these options to select the cyclemarkers you want to use but again youwant to remember that it's the activetrack that you see down here so ifyou're not seeing your cycle markers itmay be because that particular trackhasn't been activated and then like Isaid when you're doing these keycommands where you can hold shift andhit the different numbers this appliesto the active track so if you want tomake a different track move around youhave to make that the active track sothis next thing I want to show you hasto be probably one of the most usefuluses for these markers besides beingable to export audio sections theability to copy and move differentranges with markers is just an extremelyuseful function and what I mean by thatis if you've ever had a project whereyou've taken your range tool and thentry to select what it is that you wantto copy if you want to put somethinginto another section of the song andyou're never sure if you've got it onebar ahead or one bar behind some littledrum fill or something like that if youput a marker in place whether it's acycle or two position markers doesn'treally matter before you make this kindkind of a selection and then use yourrange tool and double click in thatmarkerCubase will make a selection throughyour whole project allowing you toeither hold alt and make a copy or justdrag out that piece that you need makinga perfect easy copy of whatever you needthat is just an enormously usefulfunction and not only does it move yoursection out or make a copy but it takesthe markers with them and renumbers themfor you automatically if you've evertaken the time to make marker tracksthat have maybe the sections of thesongs the way you want them exactly andyou've labeled them verse course and allthat kind of thing and then maybe you'vedecided you want to pull that intoanother project and use that to buildyour new songs with and any other reasonyou would want to move marker tracksfrom one project to another there's acouple of ways to Import and Exportmarker tracks the first way is if youactually create a midi track and go upto file and then down to export and godown to the midi file this will bring upa dialogue and it will ask you if youwant to export your markers with it thisworks but I'm not even going todemonstrate it because I found it to bein my opinion kind of unreliable I don'tlike what it does when you import themit Imports the markers into one trackand I just don't like the results thebetter way that I would recommend andthat I'm going to show you is selectyour markers whichever tracks you wantyou can select all of them or one ofthem if you want then go up to fileagain go down to your export but thistime do it as a selected tracks you'llhave an option that says copy Media orreference that you want to say copy andsay okay it'll open up a file for you tosave it onto your hard drive you justsave it go back up to file and go toimport this time and then go to trackarchive navigate to where you've savedit select on it hit open and that willimport these markers perfectly the waythey originally were with all thenumbers and in the right positions andthat wraps it up for markers as usual ifyou haven't grabbed your navigationguide be sure to grab that before you golinks to all the content on the channelever growing and free to useso I would have to say my two favoritefeatures with markers out of all of thisthat we discussed is to be able toselect them and then export them in youraudio export that's a great option andthe other option is to be able to usethem to select various sections of yoursongs you know and then copy them pastethem however you wanttwo very useful and time saving featuresthe option to rearrange the numbers is anice one too I find that to be veryuseful and the fact that you cannavigate with key command so I guess ifI think about it there's more than a fewthings to uh use with markers other thanjust putting them in and finding yourspot in the song All right so as usualit's great to have you guys heresee you in the next video
