List Editor in Cubase
hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigital audiom manual.com today let'sexplore the list editor in Cubase butbefore we start I want to remind youthat there's a link below to the contentnavigation guide which is an easy tonavigate web page with links to all thecontent on this channel and besides thatin the near future I'm going to beginadding tips and other bits ofinformation that will only be availablethere if you're working with programslike wave laab or qbas plugins or thecable gu shaper box and many many otherprojects that are in the works then Iknow you're going to find just like Ihave that this is an invaluable studyAid and the other thing I want to makesure you understand is that this is nota simple PDF this is a constantlyupdated page that has any informationthat is new or anytime videos arechanged really anything updated and onceyou have it you will always have thelatest information constantly updated soif you haven't gotten it already go tothe link below click on it and save itto your favorites it's my gift to youokay so let's get started the listeditor this is something that allows youto take all your midi data and see it ona list and then make various edits thatare specific to seeing something likethis and easier to deal with althoughlooking at this picture you may thinkthat's not so easy let's explore it getto the list editor go up to your midimenu once you open up the list editorwhatever midi data is in your event nowshows up as a long list it shows all thenote value plays through each midi notein your event and it has various menusover on the left the functions that wecan carry out you can zoom in and outthe typical ways you would for yourkeyboard grab the ruler zoom in and outall the same things you would normallydo in the project view you can do herein the list editor like all of theseeditors sometimes you may see or not seevarious bits of information depending onwhat you've selected over on the littlesetup option if I click on the layoutbutton right now the status line is notin view so I'm going to check that butanything else that's not here you cancheck it or uncheck it once everythingis checked you have a toolbar like usualyou have the status line then you havethis filters option you're going to seeas we go through this if we can checkthings and that's what we're going tosee down in the event display you havean event list over here and then overhere on the right you have a thingcalled the value display all right solet's take a quick look at the toolbaron the far left you have the solo optionright now the project will play with mypart if I turn on the solo then only thepart that I'm looking at willplay if I want to actually recordsomething in MIDI I can hit the recordbutton here we have the retrospectiverecording that means if your part isplaying and you actually are playingsomething along with it as apractice right now I'm just punching insome notes but I forgot to hit record orI didn't think about recording withretrospective recording everything isbeing recorded in the background if Icome back up and hit the retrospectivebutton everything I just played thengets inserted like I was recording ityour auto scroll buttons you're going tosee these in every editor in qasbasically it always keeps the cursor onthe screen as the cursor moves thescreen will move move if you turn thatoff cursor will move but the screen willstay right where it's at you also canenact the stationary cursor that makesthe screen move behind the cursor whenyou click on your notes if you don'thear them you want to turn the acousticfeedback button on that way everythingyou play will get auditioned you haveyour usual tools select draw erase trimtool trim tool allows you to just slicethings exactly where they're at I clickand drag over this note then I can takeoff the end of it if I select it likethat and Before I Let Go I hold the ALTkey then it takes off the front of ityour mute tool your Zoom tool you havethe independent track loop again thisshows up in all the editors right now Ihave a looping point you can see by thispurple line but if I turn on theindependent track loop I can draw adifferent looping point that has nothingto do with that you have the option toinsert various types of events you havea list here of no controller and otheroptions for example if I go to theoption that says note and my tools Ichange to my draw tool is I move my drawtool a little cursor moves with itshowing where it's going to draw nowthere's actually a cursor right herethat's playing in myproject but there's a separate cursorthat moves with whatever tool I have andas I move this along it goes up to everylittle event that's here right now theseare different notes so if I stop righthere where this note is and I go belowit with this draw tool and click on itit's going to draw in more notes and Ican keep clicking on that and draw inother notes if I want I can switch overto my erase tool and I can erase thoseone way this comes in handy in thislittle example I have pitchbend data inhere but the only pitch band I need isright here this little piece these otherpieces are like kind of extraneouslittle pieces that may have gotten drawnin by mistake very easy to find thesewith this list editor click on them withthe erase tool and then remove thingslike that that I don'tneed we have the insert velocity you caneither set a velocity here with a numberspin your moue wheel or you have a dropdown with some typical velocities wehave our nudge settings link it to theGrid or pick a resolution when you'reusing the nudge if you use the move leftor move right whatever you're selectedis going to move up or down this list ifI hit move left it moves up the listmove right it moves down the list if Iuse any of these controllers on the leftor the right for example if I use thisone on the far right it either increasesthe value on the right I hit this acouple times if I decrease it on theright same thing on the left I eitherincrease it or decrease it on the leftyou have your snapped grid either on oroff the shortcut for this is always Junless you change it you have the optionfor grid grid relative events we've goneinto all this stuff when we looked atmidi editing if you want some moreexplanation on that I would watch thevideos on midi editing use the quanti oradapt to zoom you have the quantise dropdown the apply quantise button solvequantise open the quantise panel there'sa whole video on the quantise panel ifyou're interested the quantize eventshow the part borders edit all partsedit the active part what the part is isStep input midi input how you wantcolors on your events you can open upthe VST instrument buttons for the Zonecontrols moving off of the toolbar wecome into the status line and here'swhere we begin to get some goodinformation from the list editor firstthing up we have is the mouse positionas you move your mouse pointer aroundyou get some very exact readings in thismouse position window and another thingthat's super useful you actually get acurrent chord display so as you can seeon these notes they're built in chordsis the cursor moves over over thesechords you actually get a reading uphere that tells you what chord it is youcan move your cursor backwards andforwards by using your plus and minuskey over in your number keys for exampleI'm hitting the minus key right now andnow I'm hitting the plus key but as Imove forward I look at the chord displayit says E minor telling me that thischord right here is a e minor as I movemy plus key a little bitfurther and I come over this next set ofnotes it's now telling me it's a G chordthis can come in very handy when you'relooking at chords that you've puttogether or when you have some chordsfrom another song that you're trying toanalyze you can see everything in realtime if you have the independent trackloop on you get a display for that aswell then we get the filters bar andthis has some very useful ways to sortthe data first up you can hit any one ofthese check boxes and that will hidethat particular kind of data for examplemost of this stuff is notes if I hit thenote checkbox everything that's a notegets taken out leaving only pitch bandor after touch or any other controllerdata that I've left I can hit show allto bring everything back in the veryfirst drop down we have a focus we havethese Focus options if I click on thisit says no Focus event types event typeswith data one and event channels whenit's on no Focus that means you're goingto see everything the next option saysthe event type and right now it's gradeout what this is telling you is that youfirst want to make a selection forexample right here I have controllerdata if I select this controller datajust one little piece of it then I go tothis Focus bar and I say event types theonly thing that's going to remainvisible is other controller data samething if I want to take like pitchbend Ihave an event of pitchbend here if Iselect that and then I go up to my eventtypes if there was any other pitch bandin this list only the pitch band wouldshow up the next option says event typesand data so it's exactly the same exceptit lets you filter out by the firstchoice that you make for example if I goto this note in this chord and select itwhen I look at my information it saysthat this note is E1 if I go to mychoices and say event types with dataone it's only going to take other notesthat are also E1 so when I put thatfilter on every one of these notes is E1and then the last option is if youactually have your medidi data ondifferent channels the list editor makesheavy use of The Logical editor we takethis last option that says setup itactually opens up the logical editorwhich we can then take presets out of orcreate various logical editor thingsthat we want to do there's a wholeseries of videos on the project logicaleditor if you're interested in those solet's try to get a grip on what weactually see in this list editor I'mgoing to take this midi event select itgo to midi open in the list editor andwhat this shows is every midi notethat's in that event and it goes fromthe top like a staircase down to thebottom and in this case I can see theproject cursor right here and whereverthe cursor is by whatever note it getsnext to like in this case these notes ifyou look over on the actual list alittle arrow appears so because thislittle arrow is here I know it's talkingabout this note right here and if Iselect this note it actually selectsthis column of information and viceversa if I take this arrow and I selectanywhere then it selects that note orevent or whatever is in this listwhenever you click in this area it putsthe cursor right at the beginning ofwhatever that event is a convenient wayto audition these events not only doesit change it whenever I click in thiscolumn but if I double click then itstarts playing the project and if Idouble click again stops and every timeI double click it goes right back to thebeginning of whatever it is I'm workingon then you start getting these columnstell you the information First Columntells you the type in this case they'reall notes but if there was controllersor pitchbend it would show you all thatthen you have the start column you canactually move events here if I click onthis column and move my mouse over oneof these numbers and click it'll changeit to whatever I move it to it Resortsthe list because these notes will alwaysmove in the order that they're performedthe next column we have is the endunlike the start if I move the endnumbers the event doesn't start movingto a different place instead it actuallychanges how long it is for example if Istart adjusting the end on this oneit'll actually make this event longer orshorter depending on how I adjust thenumbers the length column has prettymuch the exact same effect the data onecolumn pretty much just reflectswhatever kind of data it is for examplebecause this first one is a note data inthis case it says E2 if I click on thisstarts spinning the mouse it'll actuallychange the pitch to a different pitchbelow that I have a program changethat's going to change it to any programchange number I wantbelow it I have a pitch Bend againthat's going to spin or change towhatever pitch Bend data I make then youhave data 2 and data three columns ifyou're dealing with notes data two isnote on velocity data three is note offvelocity you have a column if you wantto change the midi Channel and then youhave a comment column some of theseevents will allow you to put a commentin here so again in this event displayyou're seeing all the events or in thiscase these midy notes moving throughlike this little stair step if I go backto the project I have four bars herethat are in a loop on this base midiline and again when I open it up in thelist editor I'm still seeing four barsup here in a loop if I zoom in a littlebit each one of these notes arehappening in this one bar here so if Igrab one or I move it around or I changethe length of it shows how it relates tothis bar that it's in but you just seeeverything the way it's being introducedin the project one note after another orone program change or whatever the thingis you're looking at the value displayis pretty much set to specific thingsthere's only about five or six optionshere but for example when you're lookingat notes you go to this value displayand you start drawing you're changingthe velocities of these notes and youcan quickly change the notes very fastby just clicking and dragging over themif this was after touch it would besimilar you could change the after touchvery quickly or pitch band changes thevalue of the pitch band very quicklythere's nothing that really tells youthat this is velocity there's no headingup here that tells you but as you changethese velocities if you look over herein the data 2 column you will see thenumbers change over there as well so itgives you some reflection of what you'reactually changing so the main editingyou're going to do in the list editoryou're either going to insert variousevents or change those events when itcomes to inserting them you're going tostart by going up to this list thisstands for the insert event type youwould pick whatever event is you want toinsert you have note controller programchange after touch pitchbend polypressure system exclusive SMF and textif I stay on the Note option and then Iswitch to the draw tool if I click it'sgoing to draw a note if I click againit's going to draw another note I couldclick multiple times if Iwanted it's going to draw the notesbased on whatever the snap value is ifyou want to have some control over thatturn the snap off then when you draw anote you can change its length withoutany kind of restriction and if youchange it to any one of these otheroptions for example if I switch it tocontroller and I startdrawing I will get a series ofcontrollers if I switch to the pitchband and I start drawing I will get aseries of pitch band events we've talkedabout this filters bar how you can clickthings to hide them there's a niceshortcut built here if you hold controlwhen you click on a category like notehere everything else gets checked andhidden and then if you hold control andclick it again everything gets clearedcouple of other shortcuts when you'reediting if you select multiple eventslike I'll select all these notes Herestart changing one of them they allchange relative to each each other allyour typical editing functions applyhere if I hold alt on any event and thendrag it I create a copy of it I canswitch to my MW tool and I can muteseveral events at the same time if Iwant to change the way things arecolored I can go to my event colors Ican choose to see them by velocity orthe channel or any of the other thingsthat are listed here one of the thingsin the list editor you can do kind ofextensively is work with what's calledsystem exclusive messages this wassomething I had to work with a lot at atime when I actually had a band thatperformed live on stage and we actuallyhad midi devices that would change thelights or our set list and the sequencerI would use would low what's calledthese system exclusive messages to setup things like the set list that time itwas next to impossible to try to editsomething like that in qbase you canload in What's called the systemexclusive and then you have an area overhere that says comment and click onthese messages and then you can do somereal extensive editing of the variousbits of information that are in a systemexclusive can insert them and deletethem these days I have no use forsomething like this necessarily but it'shere in Cubase if somebody still needssomething like this and that wraps upall the options for us in the listeditor as always if you haven't alreadybe sure to grab your copy of the digitalaudio manual content navigation guidefrom the link below this video it's yourfaster better way to learn and reviewpick it up look it over all thedifferent topics that are gathered thereand then you two can get started on yourpath to a better way to learn all thisstuff today we took a tour of the listeditor we saw the layout we looked atall the toolbar buttons Focus menu theevent list the event display the valuedisplay we saw how to draw events welearned how we can filter and edit thoseevents we ended up looking at systemexclusive messages and we will continueto move through all these variousfeatures and functions in qbase asalways it's great to have you guys hereand I'll see you on the nextvideo
