today we talk about

Fades Crossfades and Envelopes V2 in Cubase

hello everybody Andrew Blake from thedigital audiom manual.com today we moveon to our second video as we continuediscussing Fades cross Fades andenvelopes in cuase but before we start Iwant to remind you that there's a linkbelow to the content navigation guidewhich is an easy to navigate web pagewith links to all the content on thischannel and besides that in the nearfuture I'm going to begin adding tipsand other bits of information that willonly be available there if you'reworking with programs like wave laab orqbase plugins or the cable gu shaper boxand many many other projects that are inthe works then I know you're going tofind just like I have that this is aninvaluable study Aid and the other thingI want to make sure you understand isthat this is not a simple PDF this is aconstantly updated page that has anyinformation that is new or anytimevideos are changed really anythingupdated and once you have it you willalways have the latest informationconstantly updated so if you haven'tgotten it already go to the link belowclick on it and save it to yourfavorites it's my gift to you okay solet's get started so in our last videowe started to get into Fades the handlesand all these different kinds of thingsprevious videos in the navigation guidein the link below but we're going tostart off today looking at the crossFades when you have a cross fade you'regoing to see an X if your audio eventsdon't overlap you can't do a cross fadethe typical shortcut when you make across fade is overlap something and thenhere your X key and you'll get a crossfade you can also go up to audio down toFades and you'll see the option forcross fade again if things don't overlapand you try to select them hit theletter X you'll just get a warningsaying these events don't overlap youcan't do a Crossfade typically when youdo your overlap the cross fade will beexactly what the overlap is maybe youdon't want that if you make your overlapand you decide you want to just go toyour range tool make a selection of acertain range then hit your X key andyou can have a cross fade specificallyon that range if you use your range tooland you make a range and you hit X tomake a cross fade you'll find if you goto your range and change the range sizethe cross fade will not automaticallyadjust on the other hand if you changethat size and you want your cross fadeto adjust you can go back to audio downto your Fades and you have an optionthat says adjust the Fades to the rangeI click on that the cross fade willreadjust so once you create a cross fadeoverlap some events hit the X key youcan double click on this cross fade andyou get this real elaborate cross fadeeditor on top you can change the toolbarjust like you would in the project tograb this middle bar you can actuallymove the Crossfade around if you grabthis end point you can change the crossfade depending on what settings you haveat the bottom of equal gain or equalpower you can change these variousCrossfade curves you'll see them changeon both cross Fades here and in thisupper display you have the option overhere to play the FadeOut play the fadein or play the crossfadeyou have nudge options right here andthese are governed by this nudge rangeright now it's set at a bar so if Inudge it it moves a whole bar but I canchange it to any of these other optionslet's go to beat then when I nudge it itmoves by the beat you have pre-roll andpost roll options meaning if I hit playcross fade and this is set at zero itstarts right at the section where thecross fade is for example if I turn onpre-roll and move this up to 3 secondsnow I play the cross fade it starts wayout here at 3 seconds before it hits thecrosswhen you're looking at these curve typebuttons you have three of them here youwant some kind of curve to start withwhere you won't see much difference whenyou change these and even on a curveit's hard to tell sometimes what effectthese are having but if you take one ofyour points on your curve and make adrastic change then move through thesedifferent options you can see exactlywhat kind of effect it's having on yourcurve you have these identical optionson the fade in and Fade Out of thelength overlap volume and nudge if Ichange the length in other words if Iclick on it and start dragging itdownward if you look at the picture youcan see that the fade area is shrinkingor growing if I go to the overlap andstart changing it one way or the otherI'll see this number decrease and thisoverlap on the fade end increase thevolume affects either your Fade Out orfade in right now because I have themset at zero if I play my crossfade everything pretty much stays atequal volume but if I go to the fade outand I lower that down it'll start outsofter and then get louderthe last setting to look at you haveequal gain equal power you have equalgains selected you can put thesemultiple nodes on here and adjust themif you switch to equal power then youjust get one node point to move you haveone extra setting on this cross fadeeditor if you go to your preferencesediting and audio you have the option tomake a simpler Crossfade editor if Icheck that hit apply okay then you justget some of these basic options so we'vealready pointed out that you can removeremove your cross Fades going to audioFades and you can remove the fade inFade Out or remove the Fades and thatgets rid of that but your pro tip forthe day that you can just grab any crossfade and move it outside into theproject somewhere and that will removeit as well qbase has an autof fadesetting if you go up to project comedown to autof fade settings you'll getthis you can also find that if you rightclick on any track and you go to autoffade settings difference is with thetrack ones they are per track as opposedto the project this is a global settingand also up on the inspector there's anauto Fades button these kind of Fadesare not the kind of Fades you would uselike we've been doing with these largersections these are limited to only a fewhundred milliseconds where these come inreally handy is if you have clicks andpops when you overlap your audio forexample if you listen to this and thenthere's a slight little clickpop and the reason for that if I zoom inon thewave you can see that the cross fade ishappening at a nonzero Crossing Pointthere's a possibility you'll get a clickor a pop right here if you turn on theseautof fade settings I'm going to go tothe track option and just turn onautocross Fades and you can change thistime anywhere from 200 to 300milliseconds but even leaving it righthere at 10 milliseconds if I hit okaywhen I play this now the pop isgone it's a very smooth transition so ifyou're doing overlapping audio parts alot and you just want to avoid a click apop little track autof fade settings aregood for that and then this brings us upto one of our final options we canactually start drawing envelopes onthese clips if I switch to the draw toolthe minute I click on the audio event itimmediately draws the first envelopeline there I can click any point and Ican start dragging it up or down andthis is going to change the volume I canmake any kind of curve I want by justclicking and dragging when you want toerase these points if you hold shiftdown typically your tool turns into anerase tool then if you just retrace overyour points instead of drawing it'llerase them back to the draw tool as youchange these you can see the wave itselfchange if you're looking to raise it orlower it you can see the difference ifyou've drawn these envelopes in you wantto just get rid of them go up to audioand you have the option that says removethe volume curve that'll just take itright out of there and then you have onemore option that's similar to that ifyou open up your direct offlineprocessing you go up the option thatsays processes click on envelope and atthatpoint you can grabpoints and process your audio just likethat as well all right just going towrap it up for today as always if youhaven't already be sure to grab yourcopy of the digital audio manual contentnavigation guide from the link belowthis video faster better way to learnand review pick it up look it over allthe different topics that are gatheredthere so you can get started down yourpath to a better way to learn all thisstuff as we wrap up that discussion onFades cross Fades and envelopes andqbase we talked about creating crossphades we talked about changing theCrossfade length we looked at theCrossfade editor we saw some ways toremove your cross Fades we looked at theauto Fades then we ended up looking atthe event and clip envelope options asalways it's great to have you guys hereand I'll see you on the next
